skills needed for fieldwork, which provides the foundation that most other aspects of archaeology are built upon. Each year Dave and Steve employ and train four field interns. Knowing that most students will end up in CRM, the knowledge they pass on is incredibly important to entering the field with the skills to do the job. It’s imperative as well for those following an academic career to have a solid understanding and foundation of field practices and the research framework. For Steve, having worked as a CRM project director, he knows what is needed. “Not only is it unethical to ask a young person to go out there and do something they don’t have the skill to do but also think about how Native American partners feel when that happens. That’s why the quality of work we do is important.” Both Dave and Steve are highly passionate about and dedicated to ensuring students get the right training before starting their careers. They teach a wide array of skills the students will need, including proper documentation techniques, interpreting, testing features, excavating floors, mapping, survey, and more.
TRAINING THE NEXT GENERATION OF ARCHAEOLOGISTS F or more than 30 years, Crow Canyon has been providing hands-on training to students through our internship program. We currently offer internships in fieldwork, laboratory analyses, archaeobotany, zooarchaeology, American Indian initiatives, and education. “I think it’s one of the most important parts of our job at Crow Canyon. And one of the parts I enjoy most,” shared Dave Satterwhite, Crow Canyon Field Manager. Field Archaeologist Steve Copeland echoes that sentiment, sharing that the internship program is one of his all-time favorites. Both Dave and Steve have backgrounds in Cultural Resource Management (CRM). Today, CRM is where most practicing archaeologists work, with fewer than 10% working in the academic sector. With the field interns, the focus is specifically on training students in the fundamental
