The LSU Connection

LESSONS IN SELF-DISCIPLINE, GROWTH, AND GIVING BACK

When I was just 7 or 8 years old, my family lived in a rental house right near the gates of LSU. We were so close because, at the time, my parents were both attending LSU. On Saturday nights, we could hear the roar of the crowd from the stadium. My parents were typically home and ready to retire for the night as the games started; they did have a family to care for, after all. So, when they’d send us all off to bed those Saturday nights, I would sneak my transistor radio from RadioShack into my bed and under my pillow, and with a headphone in one ear, I would pretend to be asleep while listening to the game. So, after growing up in Baton Rouge right outside those gates, I never really considered going anywhere else but LSU after high school. Plus, my older brother was already going there. I will say, though, living that close to the school did provide us with a bit of a different college experience than most kids, being that we lived at home the entire time. No dorms and no late nights or whatever else college kids typically did unsupervised. My older brother was also pre-med, so when we were feeling particularly naughty, we would sneak out and go to the chemistry library to study. And no, that isn’t a euphemism for partying — we would actually go and study! I didn’t realize it then, but as I write this now, I realize that despite living at home, college was quite a challenge for me in the beginning due to how structured I was coming out of high school. There, your day follows the same pattern without fail for the entire year. School starts at the same time, classes are the same length, and you know where you’ll be and

what’s coming next. I thrived in this structured environment, but college was almost a complete 180. I didn’t see my same friends, and everyone else lived on campus and got to know each other pretty quickly. Sometimes, you’d only have two classes a day, and the rest of your day was free. Due to this sudden shift, I’ll be the first to say I wasn’t always using that extra time as wisely as I could have.

“SO, WHEN THEY’D SEND US ALL OFF TO BED THOSE SATURDAY NIGHTS, I WOULD SNEAK MY TRANSISTOR RADIO FROM RADIOSHACK INTO MY BED AND UNDER MY PILLOW, AND WITH A HEADPHONE IN ONE EAR, I WOULD PRETEND TO BE ASLEEP WHILE LISTENING TO THE GAME.”

It took me the first two years to find my footing and build an intentional routine and structure for myself; it was in my last two years that I started to get some academic recognition and joined a few organizations at school. I felt like I really started to blossom both personally and academically. The whole experience taught me a different degree of self-discipline and solidified my drive as a lifelong learner. No one would force me to go to class or help me with my homework — I was responsible for how my life turned out. I’m grateful for that lesson and everything else LSU taught me during my time there. Of course, I went on to other schools after, but in some ways, my undergrad seems to have remained my first love. My connection with the school, including those childhood radio memories, is very special, which is why I continue to give back now. In fact, my siblings and I started a scholarship for the LSU College of Science in my parents’ name: The Julie and Ma’Moun Sukkar Science Scholarship. For some people, once they complete college, there’s a feeling of “now my education is finally done,” but as my parents and LSU taught me, there’s something new to learn about yourself and the world around you every day — college is just the beginning! –Dr. Sam Sukkar

Sleep Like a Celebrity WAKE UP REFRESHED WITH SLEEP SYNCING

If one thing is for sure, Americans are not getting enough sleep. One in three people report not getting enough rest, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and 40% of people admit to falling asleep during the day without meaning to at least once a month. Celebrities are no exception, which is why many stars use “sleep syncing” to ensure they get their beauty rest every night. And you can use it, too! So, what is sleep syncing? Sleep syncing aligns your circadian rhythm, your body’s natural internal clock, with your daily routine. Unlike many celebrities, ordinary people don’t have much control over what they do every day; things like work, appointments, children’s schedules, and family duties more or less set our daily schedules for us. That’s why

the trick with sleep syncing is to align your body around that schedule so waking up for work or taking the kids to school feels natural. After a while, you may not even need an alarm! How to Start Sleep Syncing The first step to sleep syncing is to create a consistent sleep schedule, which requires a bit of self-research. Start by writing down the time of night you feel sleepy, when you fall asleep, and how many hours of sleep you need to feel rested. Collecting data may take a week or two, but once you know how much sleep you need and when you start to feel sleepy, you can choose your new sleep and wake times. Pick a realistic morning wake time to get ready (no snoozing!), and then reverse engineer your sleep time. For example, if you need eight hours of sleep and must be up by 7 a.m., you likely need to be in bed by 10:30 p.m. to fall asleep by 11 p.m.

The key to successful sleep syncing is to stick to your schedule — even on the weekends. With consistency and practice, you’ll wake up naturally feeling more rested and ready to take on your day!

Yes, Your Face Loses Volume With Age

These 3 Dermal Fillers Can Help!

Radiesse Radiesse is an injectable made from calcium-based microspheres suspended in a natural gel. It is a long-lasting, but not permanent, filler that can correct smile lines, nasolabial folds, and wrinkles around the nose and mouth. It is also FDA-approved, and its biocompatibility means no allergy testing is required prior to treatment!

As we age, our faces lose volume, depleting slowly over time. This can leave many of us feeling helpless as our faces begin to look older, sag from wrinkles, or change in ways that just don’t represent how we feel on the inside. If this sounds like you, we want you to know that our clinic has a variety of fillers that can address any concern you might have, including the loss of volume in your face. We have nine different types of injectables at The Clinic for Plastic Surgery, each offering patients unique benefits. So, to increase awareness and understanding of what these injectables can deliver, we’re going to highlight a few of our most popular dermal filler treatments this month! Juvederm Juvederm uses hyaluronic acid to volumize aging skin. Hyaluronic acid is a substance that naturally occurs in the body and helps hydrate your skin. Your body loses some of its hyaluronic acid as you age, which is part of the reason your face loses volume and gains fine lines and wrinkles. Juvederm can replace the hyaluronic acid your skin has lost, restoring youthful volume wherever you need it most. Juvederm can also treat other signs of aging, cosmetic imperfections, wrinkles around the mouth, and deep acne scars while elevating the cheeks and creating fuller lips.

And since this treatment is long-lasting, patients will require fewer visits, saving time and money.

Restylane In addition to Juvederm and Radiesse, we also offer our facial balancing treatment with the entire Restylane portfolio. This line of injectables also utilizes hyaluronic acid as a gel and works by filling in the injected area and smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles. It also makes a fantastic lip filler. The best part is the effects of Restylane are immediate and last up to six months or even a year in some cases! So, if you’re interested in any of the treatments above or our clinic’s other injectables, don’t hesitate to call. You can always reach us at (281) 940-1535 to schedule a consultation!

Where You Exercise Matters WHY OUTDOOR MOVEMENT IS BETTER

We all know exercise is good for our physical and mental health. But whether we’re going on a jog through nature or clocking minutes on a treadmill, it’s all the same — right? A recent study suggests there may be a crucial difference. Mounting evidence suggests that where you exercise matters. A small study from the University of Victoria recently researched the benefits of “green exercise,” or exercise performed in nature. The authors of the 2023 paper found that physical activity in natural surroundings had benefits beyond those generally associated with movement. Study participants who went on 15-minute walks outside saw improvements in memory and concentration more significantly than when they performed the same exercise indoors. Neuroscientists behind the research can only guess why these results occurred. Some experts believe being out in nature helps us relax and quiet our

brains. Additional research also demonstrates that people generally find outdoor exercise less physically taxing than indoor varieties — even when the outdoor exercise is quite strenuous. These findings confirm something you may have already suspected to be true. You probably feel better after a bike ride through the park than spending the same time on a stationary bike in your basement. Exercise on gym equipment can also be tedious, and many people spend the bulk of their time staring at the clock, counting down the minutes until they’re finished. We’re less likely to have that problem outside. Unsurprisingly, doctors argue that any physical activity is better than none. Using gym equipment will provide far more benefits than sitting on your couch. But when you have the option to exercise outdoors, you should take it. Just remember that all outdoor

exercise is not created equal. The Washington Post reports that outdoor activity in urban areas surrounded by concrete does not appear to have the same benefits as exercise in quieter, greener places. Fortunately, it doesn’t take much to see an impact. From a mental health perspective, 15 minutes of green exercise at a time seems to be ideal. So, get out as much as you can. And when you’re stuck inside due to weather or other circumstances, continue to make the most of it with as much exercise as possible.

Summer Isn’t Over Yet! 3 MEMORABLE WAYS TO CLOSE THE SEASON

As much as many of us wish we could have an endless summer, all good things must come to an end. But why let the season close with a whimper when you can go out with a bang? Strive for a memorable last few days of the season with one of these family-friendly ideas. Take a family road trip. What says “summer” more than piling in the car and driving somewhere? You don’t necessarily have to go far. A new town a few hours away can still be an adventure. Check out a local state park or nearby museum you’ve always meant to visit and let your children enjoy the novelty of sleeping in a hotel room or camper. Even a weekend away will feel like an occasion and stick out in everyone’s memories. Spend a day on the water. Enjoying the water is one of the summer’s greatest pleasures, so make the most of it one last time. Depending on where you live, you might incorporate this idea into your road trip. Head to the nearest beach, lake, or

river and pack in as much summer fun as possible with a favorite summer activity or something new! You could help your kids build a sandcastle, rent a kayak or paddleboat, or try water skiing. You might even surf or snorkel. Have a late night. Bedtime routines are about to make a return for school kids, much to their possible dismay, but you can indulge them with one last hurrah. Plan a special late night the family can enjoy together. You might go to a drive-in theater or host a movie marathon at home with plenty of popcorn. Camping on your lawn will also allow staying up late together doing something exciting. No tent? No problem — build a pillow fort in the living room instead! Summer only comes once a year, so don’t let its final days go to waste. A special celebration to mark the season’s end will leave you with lasting memories and even more reasons to look forward to next year.
