GUM DISEASE AND TOOTH LOSS
Your Bleeding Gums Are More Than a Nuisance; They’re a Serious Health Risk
Ever had that nightmare where all your teeth start falling out, one by one? Well, according to the ACP, for 35 million Americans, that nightmare is a reality. That’s the number of people across the U.S. without any teeth, while over 178 million individuals are missing at least a single tooth. Most tooth loss is linked to periodontal disease or bacterial infection of the gums. If not cleaned properly, over time, you are sure to develop gum problems that will eventually lead to tooth loss. In some cases, there isn’t even any warning — no pain or noticeable symptoms appear until the tooth is already lost! Not only that, but gum disease is linked to several serious health conditions, including stroke, diabetes, and heart disease, due to the bacteria in the gums traveling throughout the bloodstream. If your gums bleed when flossing and brushing, it’s likely you suffer from some form of gum disease. Luckily, there are several nonsurgical procedures that can eliminate gum disease when coupled with proper daily oral hygiene. If the infection is not reversed during these early stages of infection, surgery may be your only option.
Don’t let your gums stealthily damage the health of your entire body or get to the point where your teeth are falling out. Tooth loss is more serious than many people realize. Your teeth will shift to compensate, affecting your chewing and resulting in problems obtaining nutrients from your food or even affecting your speech.
