K-Elementary Vols.1-8 Sample

PREP NOTES FOR LESSON 8 In this lesson your child will draw lines to show edges and will fill in shapes with color. This information was presented in Lesson 7. Remind them, if necessary, about filling in spaces with smooth strokes that are so close that they touch or overlap. Students need a plant or a photograph of one. Rembrandt Peale (1778-1860) Lesson 8

Rembrandt Peale and his brothers and sisters were all given famous artist names by their father, Charles Peale, who was a colonial artist. Living in Philadelphia, the Peales had access to the nation’s most famous heroes. Rembrandt Peale painted the portraits of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, who sat before him as he captured their likenesses in paint on canvas. His father had worked alongside these men in freeing the colonies from English rule. The Peales were famous for their scientific interests too. As a young man, Rembrandt assistedhis family in creating thefirst natural history museum in America. He, his father, and his brothers collected scientific artifacts including a mastodon, which they dug

up themselves. Rembrandt would later create his own natural history museum in Baltimore, filled with his paintings and featuring the diverse plant and animal life of the new nation.

Once we draw lines that show the shapes and the edges of the object, we might want to show more about the object by identifying the color. We see the world in color so adding color to a drawing seems very natural to us.
