K-Elementary Vols.1-8 Sample

PREP NOTES FOR LESSON 2 This outdoor activity is best using a segment of grass that is wild or untended. You may want to make the frames for the outdoor activity before class so that your child can observe and go right into making art. To prepare for outdoor drawing you will need to provide a smooth, flat surface to place the paper on. This could be a clip board or a drawing board. Awareness always precedes the drawing activity. Your child will be asked to notice objects within a section of ground. You may want to look at a section together and point out things that you see and the things that you find interesting. Then ask your child what things he or she sees. After a brief period of observation, allow your child to place the frame on another section of ground and make the art independently while choosing what will go into the artwork. Plan where you and your child will go and what you will do in case of inclement weather. Some options are to bring plant life indoors or to provide houseplants. Cactus gardens are especially interesting because they often include a variety of plants and pebbles for soil.

OUTSIDE THE HOME ENVIRONMENT

When instructing a group that will be going outdoors, set up ground rules for how students will get to the field or park and how they will get back. They should be attentive to your voice at all times. Set perimeters for where they can explore and observe. If inclement weather prohibits this exercise, provide houseplants or gather available outdoor plants for observation.
