YOU MAKE AN OBSERVATION DRAWING

STUDENT GALLERY Grace age 9

Gather oil pastels and drawing paper. You may need a drawing board to support the paper.

Why would a great artist choose to draw and paint a bit of ground and what was growing on it? Why do we want to know more about the plants or creatures in our world? Perhaps you’ll be able to answer these questions after experiencing something like a bit of turf. In this lesson, take a closer look at what is beneath your feet. Cut out four strips of black construction paper. Measure each piece: one inch wide by twelve inches in length. Tape

the corners to make a square. (1) Next, go out to your back yard, a park, or walkway. Get off the well-manicured lawns to where wild plants grow. Place the black square onto the ground to mark your own bit of turf. (2) Sit and draw what you see inside the black paper square using oil pastels.
