Hometown St. Thomas June 2024 Issue 61

Letter from the Editor

Recently, I met with a volunteer who is not only a volunteer but also what I would call a serial volunteer. He wanted to talk with me about an event for which he is volunteering, but more importantly, he wanted to talk to me about a serious issue, the lack of volunteers. Folks over the age of 55, you can sit this one out; these comments are not aimed at you at all. Your age group is the bedrock of volunteers within our community, and I would like to thank you personally. For those who are 30-55, this one is for you! We are so lucky within our community because there is so much to do and so many great events for our family and friends to enjoy, the majority put on by local volunteers. And not to sound too ominous, but if you like having events like these, it is time to step up and chip in. 10% of the people do 90% of the work, while the rest of us enjoy the fruits of their labour. But that 10%, for the most part, are growing older, and some are looking to pass on the baton, but there is no one there looking to accept it. So, they continue running until one day, they just stop, exhausted and frustrated. What happens when they stop? Well, all the local events we love to take part in also stop. I know focusing on family is important; I get that, but your community needs you. Get involved, find a cause you are passionate about and ask, ‘How can I help?’ If we let these community events end, they will likely be lost forever. Geoff

This issue represents our sixth anniversary here at Hometown St. Thomas. What a ride it has been! When we first launched, doubters wondered if we could realistically produce a monthly magazine about ‘just’ St. Thomas. I would say that we have shown that we can.

When I first moved here back in 2006, the city was a different place -- it was in a downturn, many people were certainly not #stthomasproud back then; folks were trying to get out of here for more opportunities. Fast forward 18 years and look at us now -- we are a city on the rise, where opportunities and city pride abound. Instead of people trying to get out, we have families trying to get in! For those of you who have been enjoying Hometown St. Thomas over the years, you might have noticed we like to do something a little different for each anniversary issue. This year is no exception. If you recall, back in April, we asked our readers to tell us through our Readers Choice Poll who their favourite businesses were in town; we gathered hundreds of ballots and thousands of votes. So, this year, instead of celebrating ourselves, we want to celebrate these amazing businesses, chosen favourites in over 50 categories by our readers. You will find the complete list on pages four and five. As well, throughout this issue, many of these businesses have said thank you to those who voted for them.

Horton Farmers’ Market Celebrates Expanded Hours by Peri Hayes Sarah Noble is the Manager of Marketing and Communications for the St. Thomas Economic Development Corporation which began managing Horton Farmers’ Market in 2021. Responsible for their marketing, Sarah, offers, “Part of how our team supports the Market also includes business support for the vendors, so I am also available to meet with vendors regarding their own marketing efforts.” “The Horton Farmers’ Market is an incredible asset in the community,” she continues. “It’s essentially a small business incubator with a very specific focus. We are continuously looking for ways to provide growth opportunities for the businesses participating in the Market. Opening for a midweek option has been a goal of ours since we started this journey, and we are very excited to be in a position to move ahead with our Wednesday Market this year. Farms don’t just have produce available on Saturdays -- produce grows all week!” The new Wednesday Market pilot is scheduled to run from June 5th until August 28th, 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm. “It will have a different vibe than Saturday mornings,” Sarah reveals. “And provide some unique dining options that won’t necessarily be available in the mornings: live music and a licensed patio, in addition to the opportunity to shop. We are excited to welcome folks who may be unable to join us on Saturdays, as well as those who just need more market in their week. The timing is perfect to pop in on the way home from work, or enjoy dinner with friends and family.”

you may end up buying week-to-week. If you haven’t been to the Horton Market in a while — or perhaps you’re new to the community and you haven’t joined us at all yet — make this the year you make the Market part of your routine.” As Sarah concludes, “The important piece for visitors to remember is that the dollars they spend at a farmers market also go further in the local economy than dollars spent elsewhere. Buying local food has a multiplier effect of 1.4 -- 2.6 throughout the wider local economy. While the individual dollars may seem small, the overall impact adds up and that’s exciting to be part of. Every visit to the Market gives back in tangible ways, while also being some of the most delicious food you’ll find for your table. The Market is a bit magical like that.” Those with inquiries are encouraged to email hortonfarmersmarket@stthomas.ca. Moreover, subscribe to their newsletter at hortonfarmersmarket.ca to be informed of their highly anticipated special announcements and themed days.

Within a 60 km radius of the Market, vendors must grow or produce the overwhelming majority of what they sell. Asked about the businesses which will be featured this season, Sarah exclaims, “We have an incredible vendor family. Every year, that fam- ily grows and we have the opportunity to welcome new farms and small local busi- nesses – every Market day is a little bit different, while also having plenty of opportunities to discover local products

A Special Commemorative Guide for the Old St. Thomas Church’s 200th Anniversary by Geoff Rae In recognition of the Old St. Thomas Church’s 200th Anni- versary, the church’s board and I have collaborated to create a special commemorative guide-

Heather shares with us what she is looking forward to most with this upcoming bicentennial celebration. “I am most anticipating the anniversary service on Saturday, June 22, which promises to be a moment of celebration and reflection as we come together to acknowledge two centuries of dedication and devotion. It will be a joyous occasion filled with fellowship and the sharing of cherished stories, reaffirming the enduring spirit of our congregation.” Heather adds, “I would be remiss if I didn’t say that I am also excited to hear my husband, Jeff Butler, perform as part of this year’s Summer Concert series. For many, including myself, Old St. Thomas Church holds a special place in our hearts. Fond memories of attending Christmas Carol sings with loved ones, and paying respects to ancestors laid to rest in the cemetery evoke a sense of nostalgia and belonging.” I was excited to take part in this project because I love history, especially locally, and the Old St. Thomas Church has been a very important part of our history for the past 200 years. Heather shares my passion for our local history. “Having served on the board for several years, I am proud to have played a role in planning the bicentennial celebrations. I have always been passionate about our community’s rich history, and being able to share a piece of this history is important to preserve our community’s heritage and ensure that Old St. Thomas Church continues to inspire future generations.” Make sure to pick up your copy of the Old St. Thomas Church’s 200th Anniversary Commemorative Guide starting June 3rd.

book. This exclusive collector’s guidebook, a testament to our shared history, will be available for free at select locations across St. Thomas, including Briwood Farm Market, St. Thomas Seniors Centre, Yurek Pharmacy, City Hall, CASO Station, Horton Market, St. Thomas Cemetery, and the Old St. Thomas Church itself. “This year marks a significant milestone for the Old St. Thomas Church as it commemorates its 200th year of service to the community,” says Heather Jackson, Board Member and Chair of the Bicentennial Committee. “The occasion provides an opportunity to reflect on the rich history embedded within the church and cemetery, honouring the legacies of those who have shaped our community over the years.”

Ray Bosveld voted St. Thomas' Favourite Financial Planner

"As my business has grown over the years, being the biggest has never been my goal," Ray emphasizes. "It's always been about finding the right clients to work with - families and business owners who value advice and relationships." Ray elaborates on his approach to financial planning: "As an Investment Advisor at iA Private Wealth, I offer a full range of investment products, from individual stocks and bonds to mutual funds and GICs or ETFs. I'm not restricted to specific products or companies; I recommend whatever aligns best with my client’s goals and objectives." "I'm incredibly grateful for the support I've received from this community and feel fortunate to have exceptional clients who've entrusted me with their financial journey." Ray acknowledges the invaluable contributions of his dedicated staff, Cynthia and Kim, in providing exceptional service to their clients. In Ray Bosveld, St. Thomas has found a financial planner who offers expertise and guidance and a commitment to building lasting relationships and empowering clients to achieve their financial goals.

As an investment Advisor at iA Private Wealth, Ray Bosveld has been chosen as St. Thomas' Favourite Financial Planner, a testa- ment to his dedication and expertise in the field. A Call for Community Support and Volunteers

The Railway City Music and Arts Festival is preparing for its most ambitious year yet; a four-day celebration of local talent and community spirit, the festival urgently seeks sponsorship and volunteer support from the local community. Rick Nemett, Interim President of the Railway City Music and Arts Festival, underscores the festival’s roots and evolution.

“We are, in fact, the Iron Horse Festival of St. Thomas,” he ex- plains, “Celebrating our 30th anniversary this year. Once COVID shut everything down, we decided to rebrand, mo- ving from the downtown area into the park as a Music and Arts Festival. Our focus shifted spe- cifically to the arts as- pect, maintaining our mandate to keep it free for the public to attend. The festival is a true community event de- signed to highlight local musicians and artists with ties to St. Thomas. “We look specifically for

Beyond financial support, the festival’s success hinges on volunteer involvement. With the expansion back to a four-day event, “We need hundreds of volunteers,” Rick states, “From Smart Serve-certified individuals to run the beer gardens, to those helping with parking, vendor organization, stage setup, and teardown — there’s a role for everyone.” Rick’s personal journey with the festival began as a performer. “I got involved in 2021 with my band, Silver Molly. I had such a good time that I volunteered to help with the entertainment side of things. Suddenly, I found myself running the show. It’s a feel-good event, and being involved has been life-changing.” For those considering volunteering, the festival offers a variety of roles suitable for all ages and abilities. “We welcome anyone 14 years and older. High school students can accumulate hours for their diploma requirement by helping with parking, setup, teardown, stage management, and more,” says Rick.

Customer Service, The Driving Force Behind Fixed Right Automotive Warren Silverthorn has been the owner/operator of Fixed Right Automotive for almost three decades, recently chosen as St. Thomas’ favourite automotive repair and service business. Established in September 1996, Fixed Right Automotive started as a modest 5-bay independent repair facility focused on delivering top-notch service. Since then, Warren and his team have grown the business to include 7-bays located at 165 Edward Street, offering excellent customer service paired with cutting-edge equipment and technology. Warren’s journey into entrepreneurship stemmed from a desire to revolutionize the automotive repair experience. “I thought I could operate a business better than places I had worked,” Warren recalls. “I wanted to control repair quality and the customer experience.” What sets Fixed Right Automotive apart is their unwavering commitment to excellence. “Fixed Right the First Time,” Warren emphasizes, echoing the mantra that defines their approach. But it’s not just about technical know-how; it’s the cohesive team, the focus on customer service, and the personal touch that truly distinguishes them. Warren is proudest when he talks about his team: “Long-term, highly skilled technicians with shared values of honesty and integrity. We work together to solve problems and build personal customer relationships.” SAUSAGE BACON DELUXE What drives Warren’s passion for the job? “I love to help people,” he says with sincerity. From diagnosing intricate issues to providing friendly, efficient service, Warren finds fulfillment in ensuring customer satisfaction. “Car repairs aren’t enjoyable expenses for folks, so making them happy means a lot,” he adds. “And it’s rewarding to give back to the community.”

Behind the scenes, Fixed Right Automotive holds a surprising secret: their extensive customer base spans nearly every street in St. Thomas, a testament to their widespread trust and reliability. Receiving the title of St. Thomas’ Favourite Automotive Repair & Service is a humbling accolade for Warren. “Having customers tell you who they selected speaks volumes,” he remarks. “It’s a recognition of our daily dedication to excellence.” In acknowledging this honour, Warren extends his gratitude to the pillars of support that have sustained Fixed Right Automotive throughout the years: loyal customers, dedicated staff, mentors, industry associations, and, notably, his family. As Fixed Right Automotive closes in on 28 years in business, Warren reminds us that his customers are the key to his business. “Listen to their needs and address their primary concern, then explain other issues identified during the inspection and, of course, regular recommended maintenance.” A customer whose car is on the road is a happy customer! A Hub of Community and Culture The St. Thomas Islamic Centre, located in the historical heart of St. Thomas, still stands as a beacon of unity, cultural exchange, and community service. More than just a place of worship, this vibrant institution serves as a gathering place for diverse cultures and faiths, fostering understanding and collaboration in the local community. The Centre’s journey began in December 2020, when the property was purchased, its doors officially opened in February 2021. Zeeshan Syed, the Centre’s Media and Outreach Coordinator, emphasizes the inclusive vision that has driven its development from the start. “We believe this place is a melting point of different cultures, different languages, different people from different faiths. Our vision from day one was to create a space where people can come together, have discussions, share stories, and break bread together.” From its inception, the Centre has prioritized openness and transparency, aiming to dispel the fear of the unknown that often surrounds unfamiliar communities. “We wanted to ensure we had an open-door policy,” continues Zeeshan, “So people from all walks of life could see what’s happening inside.” This commitment to openness is reflected in their regular events, such as open houses and food distribution drives during Ramadan. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Centre has continued to engage the community through innovative means like drive-thru Iftar events. The Centre’s community outreach extends beyond its immediate religious activities. It has become a vital contributor to local causes, supporting initiatives like the St. Thomas Food Network and Big Brothers Big Sisters. “We distribute food

monthly and run a soup kitchen,” Zeeshan notes. Additionally, a food bank opened by a Centre member provides culturally specific foods to those in need, enhancing the support network available to the community located next to the Popeyes on Talbot St.

Our hearts are overflowing with gratitude!

We love being a part of our client’s health journey, from their fitness goals, supplements, vitamins, and natural wellness products. Thank you for making us your favourite Vitamins & Health Food store.

Hybrid HVAC system for year-round comfort Dad’s Choice Friday prayers hold special significance at the Centre, with a sermon delivered by the Imam bringing the community together in worship. The Centre has made some beautiful modifications to the space while being respectful of the building’s spiritual heritage. The Centre remains open and welcoming to all, regardless of faith. “It’s a public space,” Zeeshan stresses. You can come in, observe, sit, and enjoy the spirituality this place brings.” The St. Thomas Islamic Centre’s active presence on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram ensures that the community stays informed about upcoming events and initiatives. The Centre’s openness and willingness to engage The Centre also collaborates with local institutions, such as the hospital’s ‘Transform Tomorrow’ campaign, which aims to acquire new medical equipment. “We want to be a contributing member of this community in any shape or form,” Zeeshan emphasizes. Local heritage is important to the Centre. That is why, when an opportunity to return the oldest known bell in Ontario, (dating back to 1835) to the Old St. Thomas Church in time for its 200th Anniversary came up, Zeeshan and the Centre jumped at it. “We are glad to be the custodians of this beautiful piece of history and to facilitate its return,” Zeeshan remarks. The St. Thomas Islamic Centre also invests in its facilities to better serve the community. Significant renovations have been made, including a $200,000 roof repair to address severe leaks and upgrade of audio-visual equipment to enhance event hosting capabilities. The Centre’s flexible spaces, including a kitchen and conference rooms, are available for community events, weddings, and other gatherings, making it a versatile hub for local activities for any group, regardless of faith.

with anyone interested in learning more about its activities serve to highlight its role as a cornerstone of community integration and cultural enrichment.

In a rapidly growing city facing significant changes, such as the arrival of the Volkswagen plant, the Centre stands as a pillar of support and inclusivity. Zeeshan captures the spirit of the Centre best: “We want to open up, share our story, and invite everyone to join the conversation. This place is more than a mosque; it’s a community hub where everyone is welcome.”

The K9 Lounge, A Spa for your Pup With 18 years of experience under her belt, Vickie Lepore, co- owner of The K9 Lounge along with her husband Tony, beams with pride as she discusses her journey in the pet grooming industry. Vickie’s passion for grooming was sparked by a personal need to ease her Poodle’s anxiety during car rides to grooming appointments. “I realized I had no idea that grooming a dog was so hard, let alone a standard poodle,” she recalls. This realization led her to enroll in grooming school, setting the foundation for what would become The K9 Lounge. Established four years ago, The K9 Lounge quickly became a staple in St. Thomas. Vickie explains, “We offer bath and dry, nails, ears, puppy packages, and full grooming services.” However, what truly sets them apart is their desire to get to know their clients, both human and K9. “We care about getting to know our clients, not just the dogs,” Vickie emphasizes. In their cage-free environment, the team at The K9 Lounge strives to create a welcoming and fun atmosphere for both pets and their owners. “We love to meet new people, and we take as much time as we need with the customer to understand what they want and also what their dog’s needs are,” Vickie shares when asked about her motivation. The joy of making people’s dogs look and feel amazing is what drives her every day. And it’s not just about the grooming—it’s about the community. “We love to chat with new people and get to know the community as much as we can,” Vickie adds. Reflecting on being recognized as St. Thomas’ favourite pet groomer, Vickie expresses heartfelt gratitude. “It means the world to us,” she says. “We had a vision and a dream, and to

have the community embrace us and appreciate what we do is truly humbling.” Vickie extends her thanks to the community, her loyal clients, and the team behind The K9 Lounge. Vickie wants to acknowledge Rob and Janice Ellis’s support for providing the space to turn her dream into reality. She also credits the incredible team she works alongside, recognizing their dedication to keeping The K9 Lounge running smoothly. “Holly Quigg, Kristy Jackson, Katie Walden, Katie Keller, Jessica Perfect, Terri Smith, and Catherine Parmeter—these women are the backbone of The K9 Lounge,” Vickie concludes with gratitude. Being a little coy, Vickie hints that some new surprises are coming up soon for the K9 Lounge but wouldn’t give us any hints. What is no longer a secret is that the K9 Lounge is St. Thomas’ favourite pet groomer. Located at 39019 Talbot Line the K9 Lounge is just minutes outside of St. Thomas.
