A Hub of Community and Culture The St. Thomas Islamic Centre, located in the historical heart of St. Thomas, still stands as a beacon of unity, cultural exchange, and community service. More than just a place of worship, this vibrant institution serves as a gathering place for diverse cultures and faiths, fostering understanding and collaboration in the local community. The Centre’s journey began in December 2020, when the property was purchased, its doors officially opened in February 2021. Zeeshan Syed, the Centre’s Media and Outreach Coordinator, emphasizes the inclusive vision that has driven its development from the start. “We believe this place is a melting point of different cultures, different languages, different people from different faiths. Our vision from day one was to create a space where people can come together, have discussions, share stories, and break bread together.” From its inception, the Centre has prioritized openness and transparency, aiming to dispel the fear of the unknown that often surrounds unfamiliar communities. “We wanted to ensure we had an open-door policy,” continues Zeeshan, “So people from all walks of life could see what’s happening inside.” This commitment to openness is reflected in their regular events, such as open houses and food distribution drives during Ramadan. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Centre has continued to engage the community through innovative means like drive-thru Iftar events. The Centre’s community outreach extends beyond its immediate religious activities. It has become a vital contributor to local causes, supporting initiatives like the St. Thomas Food Network and Big Brothers Big Sisters. “We distribute food
monthly and run a soup kitchen,” Zeeshan notes. Additionally, a food bank opened by a Centre member provides culturally specific foods to those in need, enhancing the support network available to the community located next to the Popeyes on Talbot St.
