Richard Auckland: Western University’s Mentor of the Year by Peri Hayes
The accomplished Richard Auckland credits his family members, including his father, Lloyd, for inspiring his career in education: “I just remember how he touched so many lives in a positive way.” Richard graduated from Arthur Voaden in 1981, completing an Honours Degree in Co-op Geography at the University of Waterloo in 1986. Richard recounts, “One of my favourite jobs was working at the Nonquon Environmental Education Centre for the Durham Board in Port Perry. I got to work in the field, sharing my love of nature with visiting school groups.” Richard travelled and celebrated his wedding in 1987, before beginning his postgraduate Bachelor of Education at Western University (UWO). “I took a job as a Community Relations Officer with the Catfish Creek Conservation Authority where I led school groups through the Maple Syrup festival, the beautiful Springwater Woods, creek explorations and so on. It was my dream job.” Included in the abundant experiences on his portfolio, Richard moved to Myrtle Street Public School as Principal in the last year of operation, asserting, “Being in a small school allowed me to make connections with students and staff, and everyone knew everyone else. It was a joy to be there, and we were a real team. Relationships are key in the education world.
