Ward 8 Update from City Hall by Steve Lehman, Ward 8 London City Councillor, slehman@london.
It was my honour to speak on behalf of city council at this year’s Oakridge Optimists Youth Volunteer Awards night. This year, 16 amazing young people from the area were recognized for the tremendous work they do giving back to the community. The award winners had a cash award directed to their charity of choice. Each provided a presentation of who they were, what they did as a volunteer and why they chose their charity to be recipient of the cash award. As an Oakridge Optimist and a city councillor, I was humbled by the eloquence, vision and passion shown by all these young people when they spoke. The future is in good hands as I see this next generation move into adulthood.

Jazz by the Bog by Susan Smythe When planning the celebration of the 20th successful year of Jazz by the Bog (JBTB) concerts, which benefit the work of St. Aidan’s Anglican Church on Oxford Street West, Steve Holowitz was asked to be the coordinator of this GALA year. Steve’s involvement has been an important element in the success of this venture, particularly in the early years as we endeavoured to invite audiences into the church sanctuary, an acoustically wonderful room to hear some of London and area’s best musicians perform. With much thought and collaboration, the 20th Season GALA was created and what a party this has been! The last concert, THE FINALE, was presented on Friday, April 26 and featured The Antler River Project – A Reunion . The name is derived from the aboriginal name of the Thames River. This band’s sound is Jazz World Beat, blending contemporary and roots genres which suggest a rhythmic, harmonic or textural contrast between its modern and ethnic elements. All of this creates a sound which can be complex, yet makes the listener want to get up and move. The popular Antler River Project entertained at JBTB several times between 2006 and 2012. However, since Fiona Wilkinson left the group, her brilliant flute playing is sadly missed and they have not performed for about ten years. It was now time to breathe new life into the music by incorporating violinist Jonathan de Souza and sax player Aaron MacDonald, who shared the flute parts, to join original members Steve Holowitz (piano), Oliver Whitehead (guitar), Alfredo Caxaj (percussion), Rob Larose (drums), and Mitch Tyler (bass).
Keeping the beat going all evening, Rob Larose is well-known for his percussion versatility, fitting comfortably alongside Sunfest’s Alfredo Caxaj who provided the auxiliary World Beat sounds and contributed vocally on three songs, including an upbeat Celebracion which he wrote to convey appreciation for cultural opportunities in Canada to come together to celebrate. As the audience members filed out of the church, there were smiles and a happy buzz of excitement for the music that was still swimming around in their minds! They had just been party to the one of the finest collaborations of musical talent in this city and a celebration that could not have been imagined 20 years ago. Thank you to all who have participated in, volunteered for, and supported Jazz by the Bog . Let’s see what the 21st Season has in store for 2024-2025!
To advertise here, please contact Cathy@VillagerPublications.com Several of the original compositions the band plays have been composed by Oliver Whitehead, a Jazz Album Juno Award nominee, whose works span a host of musical genres from orchestra and choir to theatre and TV. Mitch Tyler’s beautiful Under the Aztec Sky, and Gable Green by Steve Holowitz (for a Grand Theatre production) prove that this group has no shortage of material or composing talent to draw from. Altitude , the first tune played and featuring violin and saxophone, set the pace for the heights we were to experience throughout the evening. Oliver’s composition Antler River Tango again with violin and saxophone but also string bass punctuations, had us wanting to get up and dance! Two selections from The River Suite transported us to the banks of the Thames where one could imagine the rush of the water as the two branches come together at The Forks while The Black Current , written with a time signature of 7/8, gave the urgency of the swirling waters.

Summer Road Trip? Preparing your vehicle for your summer road trip is crucial to ensure a smooth and trouble-free journey. You can prevent any potential disasters or emergencies by conducting a thorough vehicle check- up and performing basic car maintenance services beforehand. It is essential to inspect certain systems in your vehicle before hitting the road. Follow these five tips to have a safe and enjoyable trip, free from any unexpected vehicle breakdowns. First, check the battery. Second, ensure your tires are in good condition. Third, check the fluid levels in your vehicle. It does not hurt to check your wiper blades as well. And lastly, don’t forget to inspect your brakes. Medway Valley Heritage Forest has some informational signage as well as an opportunity to learn about the history, flora and fauna of the area with a digital tour. Photos by James Taylor.

Canada Pension Plan survivor benefits: What happens to your benefits at death? The Canada Pension Plan (CPP) pension is designed to provide a modest stream of income to Canadian retirees. For those who qualify, a CPP retirement pension is paid for life. What happens to your Canada Pension Plan benefits at death? There are three types of CPP benefits that are relevant at death. Let’s take a closer look at each, the amounts you could potentially receive, how the benefits are calculated, and how to apply. CPP Death Benefit The CPP death benefit is a one-time payment made to your estate (or other eligible individual) upon death. The CPP death benefit is a single lump-sum payment of $2,500. To qualify, you must have made CPP contributions for at least 10 years or one- third of the calendar years in your contributory period for the base CPP. In most cases, the CPP death benefit is included in your estate and taxed accordingly. For the application process, if you have a will, your executor must apply within the first 60 days after death. If there was no will, others specified individuals may apply. CPP Survivor’s Pension The CPP Survivor’s Pension is a monthly payment paid to the legal spouse or common-law partner of a deceased CPP contributor. To qualify, your legally-married spouse or common law partner must have been a CPP contributor. The amount of CPP Survivor’s Pension payable to a surviving spouse or common law partner depends on your age how much your deceased spouse or partner has paid in CPP contributions. Note that the combined CPP retirement benefit and survivor benefit O rChards esH Local b PUMPKINS b SQUASH b SEASONAL PRODUCE yrup b Apple Cider b APPLE CIDER Vinegar Jams b Peanuts b JERRY RADER PIES & MORE Join us - Unit 7 C runiCan C runiCan OPEN ALL WINTER 7 DAYS A WEEK! is restricted to the maximum CPP retirement pension amount, which is $1,364.60 per month at age 65 in 2024. CPP Children’s Benefit The CPP Children’s Benefit is a regular monthly payment to the dependent child or children of a deceased CPP contributor. To qualify, the child must be under age 18, or under age 25 and attending (full-time) a recognized school or university. At age 25, the benefit is no longer payable. The child must also be either the natural or legally adopted child of the deceased CPP contributor. The CPP Children’s Benefit is a monthly flat rate amount of $294.12 (2024), adjusted annually. How to apply Applicants can apply online by signing into the My Service Canada Account and completing the appropriate online CPP application form, or with a paper application by completing either an Application for a CPP Death Benefit or the CPP Survivor’s Pension and Children’s Benefits application form. Thames Valley District School Board Update
Members of Provincial Parliament (MPPs) to schools in their ridings to see schools in action. As MPPs are responsible for the laws that govern school boards and the funding we receive to operate, these visits help MPPs to experience the impact of legislation and funding decisions on schools in the community. Community Engagement May and June are active months in schools, with Track and Field, fun fairs, award ceremonies and graduations. It’s been a pleasure to join in community events with students and celebrate their milestones and achievements with them. We appreciate the opportunity to support students on their education journey as elected officials and look forward to continued celebrations of success for TVDSB students in the future. Your Voice Matters As always, we are eager to hear from you. Please don’t hesitate to contact us by phone or email. Our information is below, and we hope you will reach out. You can find Thames Valley District School Board online at www.tvdsb.ca • Facebook: www.facebook.com/tvdsb X (Twitter): @tvdsb • Instagram: @thamesvalleydsb
This month, we congratulate TVDSB students on completing a year of learning and thank the dedicated staff of the board for their work in supporting students in their learning throughout the year. We also thank the many family members and community volunteers for their contributions to making our schools such great places in the community. New Schools for TVDSB We couldn’t have been happier to see construction well underway when the board held kickoff ceremonies – two in London, one in Woodstock – this past month. These schools will have attached childcare spaces and are set to open in September 2025. The process is currently underway for TVDSB families to select names for these new schools. We are also happy to announce that TVDSB has received provincial funding for two schools in London (West and Southeast), bringing the total of new schools funded to three alongside funding for a new school in Lucan. Changes to Provincial Policy In September 2024, revisions to provincial policy regarding cell phones and vaping at schools will come into effect. The Ministry of Education is working on how the policy will be directed and implemented at the school board level but we will share additional information with the community when it becomes available. Visiting Schools with MPPs As trustees, we visit schools in wards 7,8,9,10 and 13 throughout the year. In May, we had a special opportunity to take local

Culture Shock 2024 On April 26, Oakridge Presbyterian Church (OPC) located at 970 Oxford Street West hosted Culture Shock, an international food festival celebrating diversity. “Members from our church make authentic dishes from their home country and share it with the community,” explained Sonia Brule, Children and Family Ministries Coordinator, who organized the event. Attendees enjoyed delicious samples of dishes from Angola, Bosnia, Cameroon, East Coast Canada, Finland, Greece, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Malwai, Nigeria, and more. Historic Hyde Park The Yeo Family of Riverside Drive As the modern suburb of Oakridge Acres started development in the 1950s, a large farm property located at 539 Riverside Drive near Hutton Road (now Wonderland Road), remained overlooking the Thames River. Here, Daisy Yeo raised her family from 1961 to 1970. The children, Susan, Vicki, Michael and Randy attended the historic Hutton Road Public School, located at the southwest corner of Hutton Road and Oxford Street West. It was a long trek from home to school by today’s standards. Susan remembers “A creek ran through the property. There was a little footbridge over it that we crossed on the walk to school. It almost floated away a few times during Spring floods There was also an autobody shop on a rented portion of the property.” Recalls Hyde Park-Oakridge Villager editor Cathy Wood, “My sister and I delighted in walking or bicycling from our paved streets in Oakridge to spend hours playing in the barn (kittens!) and fields at the Yeo’s. That was back when kids explored and played outside on their own all day until dinner time.” Although not a full-working farm at the time, the Yeos raised rabbits and chickens. Like many children then, Susan and her siblings collected discarded bottles from along the river and roadsides to turn in for the deposits, but they had some additional sources for earning a little extra spending money – going door-to-door in the nearby suburb selling the wild asparagus and rhubarb that grew on their property. “And we used to sell parking space to people who came to watch the waterskiing shows held back then on the Thames,” recollects Susan. The home was destroyed by fire in February 1970 when a defective pipe on the kitchen wood stove caused a blaze. A large apartment complex now stands nearby at 521 Riverside Drive. Susan fondly recalls large family get-togethers for Christmas and summer BBQs. While the Yeo family may have lost their home in the fire, the cherished memories of their years on the farm by the riverside will remain forever.
