Ward 11 Update from City Hall by Skylar Franke, Ward 11 London City Council 519-661-2489, extension 4011 • sfranke@london.ca Hello Wortley Villagers, Spring has sprung and I’ve been spending lots of time in the garden, out walking and in local parks. Walking and biking around the area reminds me how much I love stopping for quick chats with my neighbours and residents, which is possible in walkable communities. Just this morning I sat on my porch with my toddler to watch city staff pour concrete and chatted with the staff making the new sidewalks. Did you know the creases between sidewalks are made by hand with a tool and are used for stress relief for the concrete during freeze-thaw events? Well, now you do! All to say, I encourage you to walk around your communities and say hello to your neighbours. There are many events coming up where you can connect with others, such as the Gathering on the Green on June 1st, Geranium Tour on June 2nd, Wortley Pride on June 8th and many films playing at the Hyland Cinema. I am also hosting a Town Hall on Monday, June 3rd from 6 to 8 pm at Westminster Secondary School (230 Base Line Rd. W.) alongside the local TVDSB Trustees Pizzolato and Polhill. High Street Traffic Calming New temporary traffic calming devices have been installed on High Street, north and south of Tecumseh Ave. East. This is to help mitigate speeds around the school crossing at Tecumseh. We will be reviewing other options for the area, for potential bypass traffic from any queuing on Wellington due to the bridge construction. The concrete island is part of a pilot project we are running this year, as an alternative to the rubber speed cushions TVDSB (Ward 11) Update by Trustees Pizzolato and Polhill (Wards 1, 11, 12, 14) Hello Old South families, One more month to go and summer vacation starts for students. In June, Thames Valley will recognize Pride Month, an opportunity to celebrate the lives of 2SLGBTQIA+ people and to stand against discrimination motivated by gender identity, expression and sexual orientation. June is also National Indigenous History Month. This is an oppor- tunity to honour the history, heritage, diversity and contributions of Indigenous Peoples and Nations in Canada and recognize the strength of present-day Indigenous communities. On June 11th and 12th Thames Valley District School Board students are set to enjoy athletic events, fellowship, and fun at the annual Special Olympics more details will be provided closer to the event. Grade 8 students going into Grade 9 in September 2024, can register for Summer Programs. Please go to www.tvdsb.ca/summer for more information. Thames Valley’s Attendance Campaign Did you know that attending school every day is essential to success in school? Regular school attendance improves student achievement outcomes, and helps children feel better about themselves. Help your child succeed at school by supporting the habit of good attendance early. Using the tips below, you can make a real
difference in ensuring your child’s success. As a parent or caregiver, your support is essential in ensuring your child is on time, every day. Everyday counts! What can parents and caregivers do to support regular attendance at school? • Talk about the importance of showing up to school every day. • Help your child maintain daily routines, such as finishing homework and getting a good night’s sleep. • Find out if your child feels engaged by their classes. • Encourage your child to join meaningful after-school activities, including sports and clubs. • Notice and support your child if they are showing signs of anxiety. (SMHO resource: smho-smso.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Tip-Sheet-How- Do-You-Know-If-You-Should-Be-Concerned.pdf) Reach out to your school if supports are needed for your child to attend school regularly - we are here to help! June is an active month in schools with many graduations, award ceremonies, fundraising events, field trips and many more. We hope all your events are successful and we are looking forward to celebrating these milestones and achievements. As always, please feel free to reach out to Trustee Polhill and Trustee Pizzolato if you have any questions and concerns. www.tvdsb.ca – useful where we have transit or other heavy vehicles using the roadway, as these larger vehicles can severely damage our rubber cushions. We have “before” data from a prior speed and volume study, and will be running another in-service study while this configuration is in place, to evaluate its effectiveness. Thames Park Engagement Resident feedback will help inform the proposed design alternatives for park improvements. After feedback is com- pleted, design options will be developed and then shared again with the community. A feedback form can be completed on the project’s webpage getinvolved.london.ca/ThamesPark. Construction is currently planned for 2026 after design and engagement is completed. Service London A reminder that you can submit service requests to our online Service London portal (service.london.ca) or email me at sfranke@london.ca. You can submit things like missed garbage pickups, potholes, burnt out streetlights and more. Hope you have a great month, Skylar Franke, Ward 11 City Councillor

Donald D’Haene – New Book and Event by J. Bruce Parker After discussing his new book Nobody Wants To Read That You’re Happy over breakfast at a local diner, Old South resident and author, Donald D’haene announces, “I am so happy about ……..everything.” I find this a strange declaration from a man who has written two books describing how he was sexually abused by a man from the ages of four to fifteen. This man was his father. There was also sexual abuse towards his sister and brother Erik, whose life migrated into mental illness, drug addiction, and a tragic death in 2021. D’Haene defines himself as a ‘retired’ columnist, producer, actor, and director. He hopes that his new book will fall somewhere between a touchstone and lifeline for those who are marginalized like his brother Erik. We recently had a Q&A over breakfast. So let’s start off with the title. Why such a title and why are you happy about everything now? Donald: Let me first state that I am happy here today, as I am happily hoovering the rest of my eggs and toast, thinking specifically of my plans regarding my September event for Erik. Happy to be privileged to highlight my late brother’s life and talents in creative ways with you. Happy to have a supportive, loving partner, siblings, friends. But happy, come on, have YOU read my book? LOL. As for the title, after reading the cover, but not the contents, an interviewer recently exclaimed, “Finally a book about happiness.” I ask you, should an author explain a title? I will state, my title is A – ironic, and B – it will make sense to those who read it. Why did you write a second book about the abuse in your life? Donald: You see, I did not write a second book about the abuse. In fact, the abuser is a minor character. It’s a memoir about life after, not during. What is Erik’s story? Donald: My younger brother’s life is the whole point of my second memoir. Erik’s life had meaning; he had incredible talent. More important, he had hopes and dreams like any other displaced member of our society. He could never escape the past although he tried with drugs and other forms of self-abuse. My guilt was suffocating me. My depression consumed me until I decided to tell Erik’s story, first through this book and then through sharing his words and art. I have been reborn telling my Erik’s story. I feel I’m alive again, but I have to be, for him.
You have another brother and a sister. How do they fit into the story? Donald: What time is it? Before I answer that question I should check my DNA results. I have full/half/step siblings around the world. Specific to Erik’s story, my sister Marina and brother Ronny – we grew up together. My book is a love letter to those three siblings and my mother. Your mother seems to be a grounding figure in your life throughout all of the trauma. Tell me about her. Donald: People say to us all the time, how can you three still respect faith after all you’ve been through. They never met our mother. Never doubted God. Never blamed him. Nothing could knock her faith. We three had to learn to accept that we were human; she on the other hand was a force of nature, of goodwill, of humanity, of love and light. The book is based on transcripts of letters, diaries, and photos. How much of it is from your memory? Donald: I used to have a photographic memory for stories, events, and conversations. Fortunately, I kept thorough diaries back then, when the memory was intact. Nevertheless, the brain is a remarkable muscle. Exercise it and it will surprise you.

An Evening with Jason Rip by J. Bruce Parker
Is the telling of Erik’s story cathartic for you and your siblings? Donald: As though I need another trip to hell, but yeah. Everyone asks me that so I guess it’s important that I say ‘yes’. And add, we are still a work in progress. In your book, there are two Donalds. Which one am I interviewing?
Old South resident Jason Rip is a renowned playwright, director and actor. He has written 100 plays, and although his last name by his own admission will eventually be his epitaph, there is much life, although strange and eccentric, in his new work. It was a with great delight and curiosity that I attended his event entitled Ripping Good Yarns – Fools, Ghouls, and Broken Rules , presented by AlvegoRoot Theatre to a sold out venue at Manor Park Memorial Hall. Behind his talents as a playwright is the mind and voice of a ‘raconteur’, aka a storyteller; bringing to life, local and regional legends, folklore, and strange historical figures. Mr. Rip was enthusiastic and engaging with his eleven tales of crooked mayors, creepy local criminals, and monstrous legends in his 90-minute performance. He was accompanied by local musicians Anne Moniz and Daniel Oniszeczko whose original music sustained the spirited mood of the event. This was ‘Volume 2’ in his performance of stories pertaining to the strange and macabre in our local history. These stories are part of his upcoming book Southwesto Noir , to be published in the near future.
Donald: Oh, you have read the book. Most people who interview me haven’t. Well, wouldn’t that be a spoiler for the book to answer your question? Stop the tape and I’ll tell you. Tell me about the event in September. Donald: It’s called Interpreting Erik – Through Words and Art. My event is inspired by finding a poem Erik wrote where the line “I need an interpreter in my own skin,” was like a cry out to me. You see, we have no videos of our brother, but I found over one thousand letters, some with prose or poems and over one hundred art pieces and drawings. I never knew I had them. I took care of my mom until she passed and we had our own ‘Grey Gardens’ going. Thank goodness I never listened to anyone as I never de-hoarded. While I was writing my memoir, I picked up what I thought was a date book my mother kept in an old box. Lo and behold it was a diary and there were more than twenty of them. I never knew she kept a diary. Then I went through scores of bags and found Erik’s letters and art. Some of these gems are in my memoir; we will be interpreting Erik together on September 14. Acclaimed actor Tylor Lional Paar will read Erik’s words and my siblings and I will read our own. Where does Donald D’haene go from here? Donald: Looking for investors for my short film on Erik, Interpreting Erik which I view as my life’s work. It is now, next and all I am focused on. No One Wants To Read That You’re Happy is available at Amazon.ca. The event Interpreting Erik – Though Words And Art, is a Donald D’Haene production in association with The Manor Park Memorial Hall and will be held September 14, 2 pm at The Manor Park Memorial Hall. Visit www.onstagedirect.com (and select London) for tickets. J. Bruce Parker is a local author who loves living in Old South. He is currently writing about his life and times with his friendship with poet/ painter bill bissett . Georgia Kortas,

In This House by Louise Daw We all know that curb appeal isn’t just about aesthetics, it’s a reflection of what lies inside too. Look no further to this quaint bungalow that sits on a corner lot at 280 Cathcart and Elworthy, home to Brandie Schreiber and Chris Afentoulopoulos. Schrei- ber purchased the home in 2012 and learned it was built in the 1920s. It has even been rumoured to be an old bootlegger hangout. Originally located on Baseline Road amidst a strawberry field, it was carefully moved to its current location in the 1930s according to an 82-year-old neighbour. It is unclear why the home was moved and further research hasn’t uncovered anything yet. The style is a Classic Craftsman Bungalow, characterized by its modest size, inviting front porch, low-pitched gabled roof, high ceilings, and an open floor plan. The interior of the house was completely renovated by the previous owners using a perfect blend of old and new materials which includes restored lead windows, original doors, and ample solid oak accents. Some extra special interior features include the addition of walk- in closets with cedar paneling and heated bathroom floors. The current homeowner’s interior design reflects this old and contemporary theme and their favourite room in the house is the master bedroom which is decorated with pure 1920s antiquity.
From the exterior there is a very welcoming front porch to the sprawling gardens. And it is the curb appeal that gets a lot of attention in the neighbourhood. Schreiber’s passion for gardening is contagious. Within minutes of meeting her, just outside of her home, neighbours who were walking by were eager to chat with her about their gardens that need some TLC. After a successful 20-year career in corporate Canada, Schreiber’s entrepreneurial spirit led her to pursue her true love of gardening. She founded Happy Hippy Horticulture in 2023. It’s clear her dedication to hand- manicured gardens, using no harsh chemicals or noisy power tools, is a hit! This focus on natural beauty and pollinator-friendly practices reflects Schreiber’s passion, which began in her childhood. With a degree in Philosophy, she brings a thoughtful and creative approach to gardening. “Happiness is key,” Schreiber says, and her joy is evident! Part of that joy comes from partner Chris, a fellow “Old Souther” and fellow Philosophy degree- holder. They met by chance on Richmond Row and he soon happily moved back into Old South where he grew up. They both adore the strong sense of community in the neighbourhood. You could easily say they are regular visitors to all that the Village offers. In fact Schreiber along with her commitment to veganism and a healthy lifestyle even has a vegan pizza named after her at the Old South Village Pub – The Brandie .

Secrets of Old South by Adam Corrigan Holowitz
On Saturday May 4th the Karen Schuessler Singers capped off their season with Secrets of Old South . Joining Karen and the choir was Denise Pelley, Stephen Holowitz, Aaron McDonald, Greg Mainprize and Darryl Stacey. I was honoured to join the show to tell stories that celebrate the community of Old South. It is a source of great joy to speak with a near-capacity room, as you feel the warmth, generosity and laughter come back to you as you tell stories. Being part of a community leads to great adventures…the ones you never see coming. It is how you get good stories. It means heading out to lend a hand, and coming together like we did on May 4th. It is experiencing the realizations and reminders that when we come together, we are all we need to get by. Photos courtesy Marianne Lee. Right: Karen Schuessler conducts. Turner Drug Store: not your big chain pharmacy
Service is my priority. Community is my passion. AMANDA AUSTIN Marketing Your Property to Get it SOLD! “Amanda provided us with Neighbour of Note: Cricket Ferguson Alison (Goad) Ferguson was small at birth. Her grandfather said she was “small as a cricket” and the nickname stuck. Cricket moved to Old South London from Guelph when she was four years old. Except for spending a year in St. Catharines after she married, she lived in Old South most of the rest of her life. It influenced her love of architecture, landscapes, gardens and community. Cricket studied Sociology at the University of Waterloo, horticulture at Guelph University and landscape design at Fanshawe College. Sharing her gardening knowledge and skill, she designed and brought to life to life many of the gardens seen throughout Old South London. Also known as ‘The Queen of Elworthy’, she enjoys sitting on her porch, waving and chatting to passing by neighbours. She volunteered with the London South Collegiate Institute, helping organize reunions and events. “She had undying loyalty to the ones she loved,” reflected daughter Kelly Ferguson. “She was a woman who loved to laugh – until she would snort! She appreciated the simple things in life, like a scenic route instead of taking a highway, reading, packing the perfect Christmas stocking and annual family traditions like a good game of crokinole. She always supported and loved the Village. Quick trips would always end up taking forever because she knew everyone we met along the way!” Cricket also loved the Muskokas. “With the sounds of water, a sunset, a Muskoka chair, and a tea, it was her safe place.
And through this, she taught her kids to appreciate their surroundings and enjoy nature and its beauty,” said Kelly. Cricket passed away in April 2024 at the age of 75. She may have been born small, but leaves a large following of friends, family and neighbours who will miss her. Darren Dasovich purchased the business in 2021 when long- time owner Jeff Robb retired. Darren maintains the charm of the old style, community-involved drug store that prioritizes customer care, while continuing to be forward thinking and innovative with regards to technology and treatment advancements. For the Birds by Ben Porchuk Birds. The more of them immediately around the place we live, the happier we are – and – it goes beyond happiness. Research shows that living with several bird species around, makes us feel happier, safer, and healthier. How so? The list of reasons is long. The highlights: bird song moves us into our parasympathetic nervous system (calming us) and makes us feel safer. Seeing birds feed on our plants and insects reminds us we live in abundance. In fact, 14 species seems to be the magic number where people start to benefit immensely. This level of bird species diversity has shown to help a person feel more confident in taking on a life path true to their individuality, independent of those influencers around them. Watching birds nest reassures us that the community in which we live is healthy and can provide for families. To reap these benefits, spending ample time outdoors or keeping windows open to hear bird songs is essential. Attracting 14 species to breed in, or near one’s yard in Wortley Village during the breeding season (May - September) isn’t easy, but possible. You need mostly native shrubs, trees, herbaceous plants and living closer to a natural area is helpful. We’re lucky to have the Village situated both by the Thames River and the Coves Environmentally Significant Area. My yard is one of a few that has all of this as I’ve actively added native plants (250 species!). Non native plant species, even if they feed the birds, most often prove detrimental to urban ecology, reducing the plant species diversity in our natural areas. Watching birds closely for 15+ years, I’ve noticed that in most years, I have about 12 species that breed on or near our property on Elmwood Ave. East, which is a stone’s throw from the Coves. Another 27 species can be heard or seen, in most years, flying on or near our yard. What are some of the common, less common, and rare resident species that use or fly by our yard? Common (3 of 12 species): Blue Jay, American Crow, Black- capped Chickadee. Less Common (3 of 15): White-breasted Nuthatch, Chimney Swift, Carolina Wren. Rare (3 of 12): Screech Owl, Hairy Woodpecker, Rose-breasted Grosbeak. Moving away from sheer numbers, a lot of joy can be generated by watching resident birds (one that nests in our area). That individual for my family is a female American Robin, we have called ‘White Robin’. She’s not all white, but her rare (all white
or ‘albino’ Robins are 1 in 30,000) white markings have allowed us to identify her each spring as she returns to nest literally ‘on’ our house. When I garden or water, she comes within two feet of me, sometimes nabbing the worms from under my shovel. We talk to her, her partner, their nestlings, and now it seems, her daughter from last year (Robin feeding babies in picture below) who seems to be nesting 10 feet away on an outside light by our side entrance.
The beauty of having such markings is that we know a family member has returned and in this case, for three years (most Robins only live for two years)! So far, in three years nesting at our house, White Robin has produced five nests of babies. Should she live through this spring, she’ll nest again in July. Together, she and her partner, her daughter and her partner have accepted us as we can respectfully come within a few feet of their nests. If someone not in our family approaches and we haven’t told them to enter another door, they receive different treatment in the form of ‘dive bombs’ and explain to us that we have a ‘problem.’ “Oh no...” we say, “...this is no problem!” and we tell the remarkably common story of White Robin and the rest of our feathered family members. This amazing fair was hosted on May 4th at Infinity School! One reason behind the event was our school’s belief that learning is more authentic when it’s from a real experience. Businesses run by young people came together to see which entrepreneurs could become truly successful. Some of the products included hats, art, balloons, pins, and crocheted items. Prizes were awarded in three categories by entrepreneur judges. Crochetopia won best business potential, Balloons and Pics won Entrepreneurial Spirit, and Lincoln’s Birdhouses won best booth design. The event required lots of preparation and all of the businesses here were unique to see. We hope next year there will be even more people! HAPPY CANADA DAY!
It looks like the warmer weather is finally here (let’s hope to stay). Before you take any road trips, it is a good idea to check over the cooling and air conditioning systems in your vehicle. What happens if you hop into your trusty vehicle and push the Air Conditioning button and all you get is hot air? Have no fear, we can fix that! At Wortley Auto Service, we have state of the art equipment, and trained technicians to fix air conditioning systems on whatever vehicle you drive, new or old, foreign or domestic. Sometimes, a very minor coolant leak can become a major problem when you are sitting in bumper to bumper traffic. If you are at all concerned about the health of your cooling system, make an appointment with us for an inspection. And if you haven’t had an oil change in a while, now is a good time to have that done as well, along with our comprehensive vehicle inspection that checks the rest of your fluids, filters, lights, and overall health of the vehicle. Not to mention, if your car has not been driven much during the winter, or has been sitting for long periods of time, it would be a good idea to have everything looked at. We are here to help you. Call us today!
