A word or two from the Editor

Welcome to the latest edition of our quarterly news round-up.

Our seasonal offering has a wealth of content for you to enjoy. We have features and stories that are specially commissioned for this review - and you can catch-up on news that Champions have circulated in recent months that may have passed you by. The In My View column features Paul Harding, Partner at Ridge. He focuses on the power of apprenticeships and draws from personal experience. It’s a great read … Ordnance Survey is a major name that calls Southampton and the Central South region home. As an organisation they have supported us with a map of the Central South region that we use to promote our place on an international stage – and they helped us to create an interactive map that shows investment sites. You can read more about Ordnance Survey’s transformation into a data driven organisation from Chief Executive Nick Bolton. Linking with our delightful cover image of new Forest ponies, we have a great article from Alison Barnes, CEO of the New Forest National Park Authority.

SINGING THE PRAISES OF APPRENTICESHIPS

Paul Harding is an equity Partner at Ridge & Partners and has more than 25 years work experience gained in the built environment sector

It will therefore be no surprise to you that I think apprenticeships offer wonderful opportunities for young people, particularly for those interested in STEM subjects. I have spoken at school and college careers events across Hampshire, spreading the word to pupils and students, and my colleagues regularly give talks about what we do to students at the likes of the University of Southampton. I AM VERY PROUD THAT RIDGE CURRENTLY EMPLOYS OVER 70 APPRENTICES AS PART OF OUR NATIONAL APPRENTICESHIPS STRATEGY, BRINGING THROUGH THE NEXT GENERATION OF INDUSTRY LEADERS.

MY TIME AS AN APPRENTICE SPARKED A FASCINATION WITH HOW

BUILDING SERVICES COULD BE BETTER DESIGNED

I spent the following five years combining hands-on experience of the trade with studies at Eastleigh College and Southampton College of Higher Education (now Southampton Solent University) – I would probably never have gone to college if it hadn't been for the apprenticeship. I gained really interesting experience in how buildings work, across a diverse range of building types, ages and styles. My time as an apprentice sparked a fascination with how building services could be better designed; this led to a long and happy career working on many fantastic projects, more recently including the likes of Southampton’s Mayflower Theatre and the Mary Rose Museum in Portsmouth as well as smaller local projects of real value to the community such as the multi-award-winning residential extension of homelessness charity Trinity’s Winchester base. I have worked on projects across the world and have got to enjoy a career doing something I love.

PAUL HARDING PARTNER RIDGE & PARTNERS

Anybody who knows me will tell you I’m something of an evangelist for apprenticeships. I’m now an equity partner at Ridge and Partners, a national built environment consultancy of over 1,300 people offering multidiscipline services across the property and construction industry, but my first career steps were as an indentured apprentice at a small electrical contractor company in Winchester. Despite my initial dreams growing up in Twyford of spending my life fishing on riverbanks across Hampshire, my father somehow managed to persuade me that an apprenticeship offered a safer career path.

IN MY VIEW

SINGING THE PRAISES OF APPRENTICESHIPS

Many young people (and their parents) now rightly question the wisdom of lumbering themselves with tens of thousands of pounds of debt to gain a qualification which may prove of little help to their subsequent search for work. Instead, people who would traditionally describe themselves as middle class are seeing the value of apprenticeships. Young people, instead of delaying their career and accumulating debt, are embracing the chance to begin their paid careers immediately, with their training and qualifications paid for, while receiving one-on-one mentoring and support throughout. The careers they choose often prove to be more lucrative in the long run, especially where there are industry shortages. Others value the university experience for its own sake – a kind of rite of passage, and a chance to immerse themselves within a subject which interests them – but at what cost, now that the days of free tuition and generous grants are long gone?

RIDGE wins Large Business of the Year at Central South Business Awards 2025.

EVEN A FIRST CLASS DEGREE IS NO LONGER A GUARANTEE OF A DECENT CAREER AFTER GRADUATION

I am very proud that Ridge currently employs over 70 apprentices as part of our National Apprenticeships Strategy, bringing through the next generation of industry leaders. I’m also proud of the fact that there is increasing diversity among those joining us as apprentices, including women and people from under- represented communities. With the UK construction industry experiencing a chronic skills shortage, the more we can do to make young people from all sorts of backgrounds aware of the benefits of the apprenticeships route, the better.

The truth is that, for some young people who assume university is the inevitable next step (often merely because others in their families took that step), it is the wrong choice. University degrees remain necessary for many professions, of course, but the rapid expansion in university places and courses since the early 1990s means that even a first class degree is no longer a guarantee of a decent career after graduation.

So, to any young people considering their options, I

speak from experience when I urge you to give careful thought to an apprenticeship in the construction industry. You may, like me, thank yourself in future!

Would you like to be featured in the Central South Quarterly Round-up and share your view on what’s taking shape in your business and shaping the future of your industry? If so, please email kate@businesssouth.org.

GAINING PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS WHILE ON THE JOB - WE HEAR FIRST-HAND FROM THE APPRENTICES

JOSH FINLAY (CURRENT APPRENTICE)

WHAT I LOVE MOST IS THAT NO TWO DAYS ARE ALIKE

AND EVERY PROJECT PRESENTS ITS OWN UNIQUE CHALLENGES AND CONSTRAINTS

Working at Ridge as an apprentice for the last two years has been a great way of getting into the construction industry while learning and working at the same time. Ridge has supported me throughout my apprenticeship, providing support and guidance whether my days are in the office or at university. My colleagues, who come from varied experiences/backgrounds, are very generous in their support and guidance. Apprenticeships are a great way to get into the industry, especially for younger people that are starting their careers, allowing them to be paid for work while learning and studying for qualifications. I have worked on several exciting projects as an apprentice. I enjoy that every day is different, with opportunities to work on varied projects across the country. RIDGE HAS SUPPORTED ME THROUGHOUT MY APPRENTICESHIP, PROVIDING SUPPORT AND GUIDANCE WHETHER MY DAYS ARE IN THE OFFICE OR AT UNIVERSITY

Through my apprenticeship with Ridge, I got to work on a huge variety of projects, from small, high-end residential developments to a new RAF base and manufacturing facilities for Jaguar Land Rover overseas, plus everything in between. What I love most is that no two days are alike and every project presents its own unique challenges and constraints. In addition, as engineers, we're on the cutting edge of combatting the effects of climate change. It's a field where I'm constantly learning and making an impact, so I’m delighted I took that initial step into apprenticeships.

CHRIS LEVITT (SENIOR CIVIL ENGINEER)

I started my apprenticeship at 19 after finishing college with no idea of what I wanted to do. I worked for a year making and fitting kitchens but, with no paperwork to back up the skills I learned, I decided to investigate apprenticeships. Once I started looking into the world of civil engineering, I was hooked.

PROMOTING CAREERS IN LOGISTICS: MEACHERS GLOBAL LOGISTICS AND THE MTCP APPRENTICESHIPS

At Meachers Global Logistics, we are dedicated to nurturing the careers of the next generation of logistics professionals. Recently we had the pleasure of hosting Josh, a work experience student from Mountbatten School in Romsey, with aspirations to join the Royal Logistics Corps as a driver. Josh’s time with us has been an invaluable opportunity for him to gain first- hand experience in the dynamic field of transport and logistics. Meachers Global Logistics is proud to be a part of the Maritime Transport Careers Programme (MTCP). This initiative aims to address the skills gap in the maritime and transport industries by promoting the wide variety of career opportunities available. Through our involvement with the MTCP, we are dedicated to attracting new talent and supporting the professional development of individuals like Josh.

JOSH’S EXPERIENCE AT MEACHERS

Josh’s week at Meachers has been diverse and enriching. He spent time shadowing our experienced drivers, gaining insights into the daily operations and challenges of logistics on the road. This hands- on experience is crucial for anyone looking to pursue a career in logistics, providing a real-world understanding that goes beyond textbooks. Josh’s experience didn’t stop there. He also had the opportunity to interact with our engineers and mechanics, learning about the maintenance and technical aspects that keep our fleet running efficiently. This holistic approach to work experience ensures that Josh has a well-rounded understanding of the logistics industry. To complement his field experience, Josh participated in office-based administrative work. He shadowed our traffic team, gaining insights into the planning and coordination that underpin successful logistics operations. This experience has provided Josh with a comprehensive view of the logistical planning process, enhancing his knowledge and preparing him for a future career in the Royal Logistics Corps. MEACHERS GLOBAL LOGISTICS, BELIEVES IN THE POWER OF HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE AND MENTORSHIP - WHETHER YOU ARE A STUDENT LIKE JOSH, OR A SCHOOL LEAVER. FOR CAREER OPPORTUNITIES, VISIT CAREERS PAGE .

HOW ORDNANCE SURVEY IS MAPPING OUT THE FUTURE CHIEF EXECUTIVE NICK BOLTON TALKS ABOUT ORDNANCE SURVEY’S TRANSFORMATION INTO A DATA-DRIVEN ORGANISATION, THE GROWING IMPORTANCE OF LOCATION INTELLIGENCE, AND THE CHALLENGES THAT LIE AHEAD

CAN YOU BRING US UP TO DATE ON HOW ORDNANCE SURVEY HAS MOVED FORWARD IN RECENT YEARS?

Nick Bolton Chief Executive Ordnance Survey

Ordnance Survey (OS) has been mapping Great Britain for over 230 years, and today we remain the custodians of that national map. Every day our expert teams capture Britain’s changing landscape and features to cm accuracy using planes, drones and boots on the ground - generating 30,000 updates daily which go straight into our digital database. OS continues to evolve as an organisation and now operates much more as a data company. As part of DSIT, we’re embedded into a wider geospatial community helping shape the future of public sector data, through initiatives like the National Data Library, Digital Marketplace, and government AI capabilities. Our most recent period of digital transformation started five years ago when we took the opportunity to totally redesign our back office and data because customers were asking for faster and easier access. This led to the launch of the OS National Geographic Database ensuring higher levels of usability, more options for personalisation and richer attribution of data. Our data provides valuable insights and fosters close collaboration between government and organisations by ensuring a consistent, reliable dataset. It also enables the linking of different datasets to deliver richer insights and more effective outcomes across commercial and public service tasks. Put simply, geospatial data is the glue that makes other data interoperable and helps generate location-based insights that support critical decision making, drive efficiency and strengthen the economy.

MAPPING OUT THE FUTURE

There are some companies so locked into us and there are others not benefiting from our data and services. We want to change that. OS data has recently been used by the telecoms sector to address evolving safety requirements and enhance worker protection by informing site visits with detailed information such as building heights, roof configurations and distance to roads and public spaces. Another example is our work with Southern Housing. Our data has been used specifically to help progress its sustainability and biodiversity goals, and maximising the positive difference it makes to society. Solving challenges associated with climate change is a common thread in why some many organisations use OS data. Did you know that five of the Top 10 Banks and 11 of the Top 20 Insurers use OS data? They use our data to understand the location of assets – a critical factor in risk analysis, especially when assessing threats like flooding or wildfires. OS has also recently mapped the presence of solar panels across GB and collaborated with our partner Snowflake in developing a demo to map the potential for solar panels. This project, which combines OS and Met Office data is a great example of how geospatial insight can directly support the government’s net zero ambitions. HOW CAN OS’S LOCATION DATA HELP LOCAL BUSINESSES AND ORGANISATIONS IN THE SOUTH?

WHAT ARE THE NEXT CHALLENGES ON THE HORIZON FOR ORDNANCE SURVEY? As part of the digital fabric of the nation, we are continually enhancing our data and using new technologies and innovations to supercharge learning. For example using AI and Machine Learning to drive map updates and change detection. We don’t want to just put data out into the world. We want people to use it and have developed the tools and partnerships to help grow the use of our data.

Also looking ahead, OS has recently taken on the operation of the National Underground Asset Register (NUAR), incorporating this into our public task. We are excited to apply our expertise in mapping the country above ground, to the infrastructure below it. With over 4 million km of pipes and cables, NUAR will help reduce roadworks and disruptions, and make excavations safer by providing a single platform for accessing underground data. Location data is the golden thread that connects everything. That’s why we have an important role to play - it’s about laying down the foundations for the next 100 years for a more data-driven and resilient future. Discover more

A WORLD CLASS ENVIRONMENT AND WORLD CLASS ECONOMY

AS THE NEW FOREST NATIONAL PARK MARKS ITS 20 ANNIVERSARY, THE SOLENT AREA IS UNDERGOING CHANGE ON MANY FRONTS AND HOW WE ACT TOGETHER NOW WILL DETERMINE THE SUCCESS OF OUR COLLECTIVE FUTURE. TH We hear from Alison Barnes - CEO for the New Forest National Park Authority

Alison Barnes FRSA FLI - Chief Executive Officer New forest National Park Authority & Business South NED

PROTECTING OUR NATURAL ASSETS IS NOT

AN ‘ADD-ON’ OR ‘NICE TO HAVE’

It’s our natural assets that give direct and distinctive value to our economy and communities:

Capturing carbon and atmospheric pollutants Protecting us from flooding Offering business natural materials and resources Proving healthy food

Creating places where people can go to recharge and keep healthy. So protecting our natural assets is good for us and our economy; it’s not an ‘add-on’ or ‘nice to have’.

Our maritime history connects us to the world; we are home to world- class universities and research facilities; an exciting and diverse cultural offer; cutting edge businesses… and importantly our environment is world-beating – with a staggering 20,000 species in the New Forest alone. Our environment is, I believe, a huge asset to be cherished and safeguarded. It’s the fabric that weaves across our lives and gives life, wellbeing and an exceptional place to live and work. It features the New Forest to the west, the South Downs to the east, our special rivers and the Solent with its rich coastal and marine ecology and the green spaces that run through our towns and cities. Our region is naturally distinctive in character; a unique and special environment we can all be justifiably proud of.

THE NEW FOREST NATIONAL PARK MARKS ITS 20 ANNIVERSARY TH

We’ve developed a ‘green links’ vision showing how new corridors can be created for wildlife and people to reconnect the Waterside communities on our National Park boundary with the New Forest.

A ‘Greenprint’ initiative - led by the National Park Authority, University of Southampton and University of Portsmouth and local authorities – is making recommendations to enhance green skills, jobs and careers and ensure there are opportunities for the next generation of green leaders to progress. Our £1.4m YouCAN youth for climate and nature scheme including partners from Bournemouth to Southampton is helping young people to develop their careers in the sector so that we are the go-to area for such careers in the future. Land and water management, nature restoration, carbon capture, green tech, supported by research, innovation and green finance are all key elements of our regional economy that have the potential to grow. As we look to the next 20 years, let’s ensure investment is made into nature so we can truly be known as a world class economy and world class environment. All of us can play a part securing our wonderful area for future generations just as those who went before us did.

The New Forest is not only a haven for wildlife and heritage, but a vital

contributor to the region’s economy and public health.

Here we can show where environment, culture, economy and health come together in a landscape and can change threats into opportunities and solutions. We’re working alongside landowners, volunteers, businesses and local communities as ‘Team New Forest’ to secure our rich landscapes, heritage and culture.
