AN EXTRA GIFT HOW WILL YOU CELEBRATE LEAP DAY? We’ve been given the gift of an extra day this February. This year has a leap day on Saturday, Feb. 29, and while it may seem like just another 24 hours, it’s a great opportunity to spend the day doing less than typical things. So, what’s stopping you from celebrating a little bit on this extra day? Personally, I’d like to start with a breakfast of eggs Benedict and Champagne! I’ll take my time to enjoy breakfast and put work out of my mind. I love my job and helping clients every day, but leap day is the perfect excuse to be a little selfish. And with leap day landing on a Saturday, there’s no better day in the year to do this. After the decadent breakfast, I’ll keep the day low-key, finding time to meet with friends and family and go out for lunch. I’ll enjoy their company and soak up the day in the company of those I love. It will be a simple, easygoing, and relaxing day. Short of wishing I was in my 40s again, this day could be as close to perfection as I need. Perhaps that’s the beauty of leap day. It doesn’t have to be a grand, spectacular day to be a gift. Just the fact that we get to live an extra day is a gift in and of itself. Of course, if you have a birthday on leap day, there’s a big reason to celebrate! After all, you only get a birthday every four years — or so one would think. Leap day spans back to the days of Julius Caesar’s reign in Rome. In 46 B.C., Caesar and his astronomers discovered that the 355-day Roman calendar was just over 10 days shorter than the solar calendar. He instituted a 365-day calendar and concluded there was a need to add an extra day every few years to make up for the lost time. Pope Gregory XIII created leap day as we know it on Feb. 29, where it appears to happen every four years. Typically, leap day does not occur in years that are divisible by 100, but the exception is if the year is divisible by 400, then there is a leap day. So, it occurred in the years 1600 and 2000,
but we didn’t have a leap day in the year 1700, nor will we have one in 3000. “Leaplings” who are looking forward to a birthday in the year 3000 will actually have to wait eight years before they have another birthday. The math behind leap day may be fascinating, but the folklore behind it is equally as unique. Some European countries believe leap day produces bad omens, such as the Greeks, who believe getting married during a leap year is bad luck. Other Europeans celebrate Bachelor’s Day on leap day to commemorate Saint Patrick giving permission for women to ask men to marry them on leap day. Historians believe this led to the U.S. tradition of Sadie Hawkins dances! Regardless of whether you choose to believe the bad or the good about leap day, there’s no denying that this special day offers us one extra opportunity to live a little in 2020. I hope you find a way to make it special this year.

THE DOG WHO HELPED TAKE DOWN AL-BAGHDADI
On Oct. 28 last year, President Donald Trump tweeted a photo that quickly went viral. It showed an adorable snapshot of a bright-eyed Belgian Malinois, tongue lolling, still wearing its camo military vest. In the caption, President Trump explained that the pup, Conan, was a national hero who was instrumental in taking down ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. With four years in special operations forces and roughly 50 missions under his collar, Conan was selected to be part of the team that pursued al- Baghdadi through a network of underground tunnels in northwest Syria, where the terrorist ultimately died. It’s unclear whether Conan was there to track al- Baghdadi or to spot improvised explosive devices that may have been planted on the route, but either way, he performed well.

President Trump captioned the photo “AMERICAN HERO!” and he’s not alone in his appreciation for the hardworking dogs that have been helping our military since World War II. “To me, they’re the first line of defense,” United States War Dogs Association President Ron Aiello told Vox after the news about Conan came out. “They’re such a great asset to our military today.” Military dogs are put up for adoption after 6–8 years in the service, which means a lucky civilian could take Conan in as early as 2022! MEET ALBERT DAYKIN!
Don Turner Legal Team Partners With Family Law Professional
Don Turner and Albert Daykin met 15 years ago when their offices happened to be right next to each other. Rather than strike up competition, the duo decided they were better together and teamed up to offer more resources for their clients. “I’ve enjoyed it,” Albert says. “I think it’s worked out well for both of us.” Albert has been practicing law for 41 years. Growing up in Augusta, Georgia, Albert says it was Perry Mason and his uncanny ability to prove innocence that sparked his interest in the law. While he can’t pinpoint a time when he didn’t want to be a lawyer, about 20 years ago, his interest in law began to shift. Albert started his career as a tax lawyer at an international CPA firm. He began working in other practice areas before settling on family law more than 20 years ago. “It can be stressful at times, and sometimes, when there are bad situations with children, it makes it worse,” Albert says. “But sometimes you help people out, and it makes you feel really good.” Throughout his two decades in family law, Albert has helped a variety of people. Today, when he’s not helping other families, Albert can be found with his own family. He and his wife have four kids and eight grandchildren, and the family enjoys spending days at the beach and getting together when they can. Valentine’s Day is all about love … and chocolate. Enjoy these chocolate peanut butter date truffles with your date this Valentine’s Day.
INGREDIENTS •
1 lb medjool dates, pitted (about 1 1/2 cups)

1/2 tsp sea salt
•
1 cup bittersweet or dark chocolate, chopped
Warm water
1/4 cup peanut butter
•
1 tbsp coconut oil, melted
DIRECTIONS 1. Using a food processor, blend dates and sea salt until dough can be formed into a ball. Slowly add enough warm water to mixture to thicken dough. 2. Roll dough into tablespoon-sized balls. Freeze for 20–30 minutes. 3. In microwave, warm 1/4 cup peanut butter for 30 seconds, then drizzle peanut butter on top of balls. Freeze balls for another 20 minutes.
4. Meanwhile, in microwave, warm chocolate with coconut oil until melted. Stir well. 5. Coat balls in chocolate and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet. 6. Top with additional salt and freeze for 30 minutes. Serve at room temperature.

FEB. 14 IS NATIONAL DONOR DAY
With all the cards, chocolates, and expensive dinners, it’s easy to get cynical about Valentine’s Day. However, National Donor Day also falls on Feb. 14, and it can refocus our attention back on the real meaning of the day: love. In the U.S., 20 people die each day while waiting for an organ transplant. Losing loved ones is one of the most painful aspects of the human experience, and while it is unavoidable, organ donation offers a pathway to help prevent that loss and keep more love in the world. In the spirit of that love, here are a few ways you can get involved with National Donor Day this Feb. 14. Register as an organ donor. Signing yourself up is easy and can be done either online or in person at your local Department of Motor Vehicles. You’ll need official identification to register. Registration is not permanent and you will always have the option to change your mind. Once registered, you will not need to carry your donor card with you, as your status exists in the registry.
Join a Donor Dash. Donor Dash fundraising events pop up all over the country on National Donor Day. These noncompetitive 5K running and walking events are designed to bring donors and recipients together and keep hope alive for those who are currently waiting for a donation. To learn more, or to register for an event, check out DonorAlliance.org. Participate in #StartTheConversation. Donor Alliance, a nonprofit that works to promote organ donation, began the #StartTheConversation campaign as a way to help spread awareness about organ and tissue donation. Starting the conversation can be as simple as sharing that you registered with your friends and family or as personal as sharing a story about how organ donation has touched your life or the lives of your loved ones. Don’t let another Valentine’s Day come and go in a tide of cellophane, candy hearts, and cheesy cards. This year, get involved in National Donor Day. After all, what better way is there to express the value of love than giving the gift of life?
