Rural Physician Recruiting Challenges and Solutions

Use National Health Services Corps Physicians As referenced above, facilities that obtain a HPSA designation can recruit National Health Services Corps (NHSC) physicians. These are physicians who have been provided scholarships in exchange for a commitment to work in areas of the U.S. with limited access to care. In October, 2018 HHS and HRSA announced $293 million in awards to primary healthcare clinicians and students through NHSC and Nurse Corps programs. This includes $142.1 million to provide 3,263 new awards and 2,384 one- year continuation wares to fully trained, licensed primary care clinicians in exchange for providing primary health care services in an area of greatest need. Currently, an estimated 13 million people receive care from more than 12,500 NHSC and Nurse Corps clinicians. Another 1,725 primary care students are either in school or in residency preparing for future service with the Crops programs. More than 3,600 of these NHSC members are currently providing behavioral health care services, including medication-assisted treatment and other evidence-based substance use disorder care, in high need areas. NHSC and Nurse Corps can be a valuable resource for rural facilities seeking to address substance abuse and mental health challenges. Conclusion Physician recruiting can be challenging for healthcare facilities of all types, but it can be particularly challenging for rural healthcare providers. However, by employing strategies that maximize the many benefits that rural practice offers physicians, rural healthcare facilities can achieve consistent physician recruiting success.
