AN EARLEY FAMILY UPDATE
Making the Most of the Time We Have Left Together
T his school year was the beginning of a new adventure in the Earley household. Our eldest daughter, Lindsay, began high school this year, and to be completely honest, I wasn’t sure I was ready to have a high schooler just yet! This recent life change for Lindsay has really made me think about our family and making the most of the time we have left while all five of us still live under the same roof. We really only have four summers left together, and we will be damned if we don’t make them some of the greatest summers yet. In fact, this summer, we maximized the amount of time we spent together, taking three trips to the shore for coastal summer adventures. There’s nothing we love more than spending a few days on the beach and in the water.
As for our middle daughter, Paige, softball season may be quite a few months out yet, but I know she’s looking forward to another season. Paige is in seventh grade at our local middle school, which means we now have one child at every school level. It was nerve-wracking to approach this year knowing we would have to split our time between three schools, but like anything we do in a family with three active girls, my wife and I knew we would have to divide and conquer their practices, events, and competitions. Thankfully, we have some wonderful friends on each of their teams who are willing to step in and help.
Even better, in preparation for this busy school year, we had a fun summer of exploring and relaxing.
And we’ve decided to keep the fun going by involving the whole family in my wife’s Spartan Races. Currently, she’s training to compete in a Sprint, Beast, and Super twice — a double trifecta! This year, Lindsay is going to join us in the adult races, and Paige and Natalie will compete with the kids, making the event an entire family affair. As the school year ramps up, it’s important for us to have these family memories to rely on and reminisce about. After all, we only have four years of memories left to make together. –-Chris Earley
For Lindsay, one thing that has yet to change is her drive for soccer. She began training for the JV soccer team and season in August, and I know she’s looking forward to competing at a higher level. We can’t wait to see what her high school soccer career brings her, but it’s always exciting to watch your child grow. Our youngest daughter, Natalie, is a great example of this! Readers may remember that Natalie started gymnastics not too long ago, and I’m proud to say that she has moved up into a new level. She’s mastered a back-handspring and has been able to complete a crucial move to leap onto the bars. As she begins third grade, we know she’s only going to continue to grow in the sport.

An Homage to Running’s Greatest Athlete Chris Earley’s Bookshelf
As any runner will tell you, half the battle in the race is getting the motivation to continue. That’s why when Steve “Pre” Prefontaine’s empowerment and running style hit the mainstream, thanks to his stellar performance in the 1972 Olympics and world events leading up to the big races, it fueled a renaissance for running. Pre’s style and the tragedy that cut his career and life short are the basis for “Pre: The Story of America’s Greatest Running Legend, Steve Prefontaine” by Tom Jordan. Published in 1997, this book is timeless, especially for runners. Pre began his lustrous career in Oregon, and at a young age, he became the first person to win four NCAA titles in one event. He set American records, was vocal about a new standard in athletics, and became an inspiration to aspiring runners year after year. In fact, in Pre’s time, runners didn’t earn the same amount of money and prestige as other athletes. Throughout his training, Pre lived in poverty, despite shattering records on every stage. Pre’s “maverick” style and dedication to the sport contributed to the running explosion of the 1970s and 1980s. But his career and the subsequent possible records he could have achieved were cut off when he was killed at the age of 24 after crashing his car. What he could have been and what running could become because of his dedication remains unknown, but the short-lived legacy he did build continues to run through each race athletes compete in. For an avid runner and athlete, “Pre: The Story of America’s Greatest Running Legend, Steve Prefontaine” was like a gospel that added more fuel for my running passion. Pushing yourself beyond the limits you mentally set for yourself and beating your previous time is an ultimate high, and to read about one of the sport’s first “greats” was truly amazing. GETTING THE GRADE What to Do After a Bad Inspection Report
Will a lender receive the report? When applying for a loan, there’s a fear that a lender could see the negative report on a property the buyer wants to sink their money into and will back out. However, at Liberty Inspection Group, we will only provide a copy of the report to clients who pay for the service. As a courtesy, we may send a copy to the real estate agent.
Getting a bad report on an inspection can feel a lot like a bad report card from school. Whether it’s something structural (like termite damage) or a major safety issue (like bad wiring), poor findings can be a crushing blow, leaving a lot of questions in their wake.

This silky caramel recipe is spiked with miso for a complex, rich snack that won’t hurt your teeth. MISO CARAMEL APPLES
INGREDIENTS

4 Granny Smith apples 1/2 cup raw pistachios 1 1/2 tsp plus 1 cup sugar

4 Popsicle sticks
Ingredients:
2 tbsp light corn syrup 1/4 cup heavy cream
3 tbsp sesame seeds
1/4 tsp kosher salt
2 tbsp white miso, divided
DIRECTIONS
1. Heat oven to 275 F. 2. In a food processor, pulse pistachios and 1 1/2 tsp sugar. Add sesame seeds and 1 tbsp miso, pulsing until miso is fully broken up. Spread evenly on a rimmed baking sheet. Bake for 15–20 minutes and let cool. 3. Meanwhile, insert a Popsicle stick into the center of each apple. 4. In a saucepan, bring corn syrup, 1 cup sugar, and 2 tbsp water to a boil. Boil for 5–7 minutes, swirling infrequently, until caramel is a light amber color. 5. Add cream and salt to caramel, whisking to combine. Transfer to a large mixing bowl and quickly whisk in remaining miso. 6. To assemble, first roll apple in caramel, then in pistachio mixture, before resting on greased baking sheet. 7. Let cool 30 minutes and serve.

In 1790, a school teacher named Ichabod Crane was riding home alone from a harvest festival in the village of Sleepy Hollow when he encountered a mysterious rider on horseback. Crane, horrified by the horseman’s missing head, turned and ran in the opposite direction. The Headless Horseman gave chase, hurling his own decapitated head at the terrified teacher. Ichabod Crane was never heard from again ... or so goes “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” by Washington Irving. This story, first published in 1820, has become a Halloween favorite. The legend is so beloved that in 1997, the village of North Tarrytown, New York, where many events of the story take place, officially changed its name to Sleepy Hollow. Today, the town becomes one big Halloween party during the month of October.
Hollow Cemetery, where Washington Irving himself was laid to rest. Evening lantern tours of the cemetery are a popular attraction, and Irving isn’t the only spooky celebrity buried there. Fans of the Gothic soap opera “Dark Shadows” will be delighted to enter the crypt of famed vampire Barnabas Collins. Another highly anticipated stop for many guests is Sleepy Hollow’s premier annual attraction, Horseman's Hollow, an experience not for the faint of heart. During the event, the 300-year-old Philipsburg Manor is transformed into a living nightmare, where vampires, witches, ghouls, and undead soldiers lurk in the shadows. They all serve the dreaded Headless Horseman and are determined to make sure guests don’t leave alive! But it’s not all scares in Sleepy Hollow. There’s plenty of Halloween fun for all ages. Sleepy Hollow boasts relaxing hayrides, tours of Irving’s home, live readings of famous Halloween stories, performances of a brand-new musical based on Irving’s spooky tale, and the Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze, an incredible exhibition of over 7,000 hand-carved pumpkins.
