ing of another paraclete. In His paschal discourse, ere He breathed His tender farewell, our blessed Saviour spoke to His own and said, “ And I will pray the Father and He shall give you another Comforter, that He may abide with you for ever, even the Spirit of Truth whom the world cannot receive because it seeth Him not neither knoweth Him, but ye know Him, for He dwelleth with you and shall be IN you” (John 14: 16-17). Think on this preposition IN, the pronoun YOU, and then the person of the HOLY SPIRIT. Link the three together: THE HOLY SPIRIT IN YOU. Dwell upon this fact until its revolu tionary import grips you. This is not what is known as the divine spark, or your better self. This is a guarantee of the possibility of the fulness o f God taking such a hold o f you, that the earthly part of you (the body) may glow with divine fire. If you have known the regenerating power o f the Holy Spirit, God the Holy Spirit dwells in you. This is not a visionary fancy, but a veritable fact which can lead to victorious fulness. To know the indwelling o f the Holy Spirit is the secret of holiness, without which we cannot see or understand God. How may the believer reap the full benefit of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit? May I suggest a fourfold answer to this question? 1. Cultivate a consciousness of the Spirit within. It is gloriously possible to have a moment-by moment consciousness of His presence. 2. A moment-by-moment com mitment to Him. Remember, His will is always best. 3. A constant consultation with Him. Remember He is a person, not a mere influence. Talk with Him and thus experience the fel lowship of the Holy Spirit. 4. Be controlled by Him; let Him have sovereign domination over y ou r thought life; your speech and action will then glorify God. QH
the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, the invincible and irresistible law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus is set in operation, and we are liberated from the tyranny of the law of sin and death. It is not necessary for you to relapse continually into sin. There is a moment-by-moment deliverance. There is deliverance for you; you can be liberated from sin’s de vastating power, its deadly poi son, and its destructive paralysis. The believer in the Lord Jesus Christ has known the power o f the Holy Spirit in the miracle of regeneration. Day by day, the be liever may experimentally prove the power of the Holy Spirit in a glorious deliverance f r om the bondage and control of sin. The Holy Spirit also RESIDES. The very moment a person ex periences salvation, the Holy Spir it takes up residence in him. The believer becomes a “ temple of God.” This indeed is a wonderful fact. To know that the Holy Spir it deigns to dwell in me is so mar velous that it fills me with awe and wonder. The Apostle Paul, writing to the Corinthians, de clared, “Know ye not that ye are the temple o f God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?” (I Cor. 3:16). The word trans lated “dwelleth” is a very illumi nating word. It comes from a word which means to use, or have as a house. This word is used five times in the New Testament in reference to the Holy Spirit’s making His home within the believer. You would find it profitable to look up the following references and note their contextual setting: I Cor. 3:16; Rom. 8:9, 11; II Tim. 1:4. What a tremendous thought is here! The Holy Spirit crosses the threshold o f my heart and makes my spirit His personal residence. He sits down on the throne o f the human will and assumes the gov ernment and control of my being and destiny. This is what our Lord antici pated when He spoke of the com
