A Suggested Bibliography for OU TGO ING MISSIONARIES

By EVERETT F. HARRISON, Th. D *

R ECENTLY a request for such a list as the following came from a young man who had spent several years in South America and who felt the need of some guidance in creating a library of his own. Others, no doubt, have a similar need which this list may help to fill. The governing principle in its compo sition is compactness with quality. Sug gestions for its improvement will be wel comed. Books not in print are marked O. P. Hebrew and Greek grammars, and texts of the Bible, as well as English transla tions of the Bible, are not included. Old and New Testament Introductions are omitted in view of the “ International Standard Bible Encyclopaedia” and Man ley’s “New Bible Handbook.” Hebrew and Greek concordances are lacking, too, but this need can be quite satisfactorily met by an intelligent use of Young’s' “ Analytical Concordance to the Bible.” If this does not suffice, Davidson’s Hebrew Concordance is recommended and for the Greek, Moulton and Geden. Schmoller’s Greek Concordance is smaller and not complete. An effort has been made to provide something in every essential area. Inci dentally, there is nothing here on pho tography, which has become of great im portance in missionary work. Perhaps some missionaries with considerable ex perience in this field will volunteer sug gestions to be included in a revised list. One will find here some ten titles deal ing directly with missions, plus others in linguistics, travel, and medicine. In the Biblical field are included books on Bible history, geography, and archaeology, Christian philosophy and apologetics, theology, doctrine, the history of doc trine, individual doctrines (such as the inspiration of the Scriptures, the resur rection of Christ, etc.), commentaries, devotional Bible study, prayer, the life of Christ, parables, miracles, etc. Such items as the cults, Romanism, science and the Bible are not forgotten. General history and literature, as well as the history of philosophy, find a place here. Yet it is inevitable that some useful things have been overlooked. On the other hand, those who employ this bibliography as a guide will not waste money on un tried books and works of secondary im portance. *Professor of New Testament at Fuller Theological Seminary, Pasadena, Calif.
