the Red Sea. Thus we see that the sal vation of Israel was all of God. It was only as Israel co-operated with the di vine plan that they were saved from destruction. It is no different today. The gospel is all of God's provision. Man must co-operate with the divine provi sion to the extent that he receives by faith what God has provided. Study Ephesians 2:1-8. Confidence Produced by Deliverance 14:31 Israel’s faith was greatly increased after they had seen what God had done in saving them. Doubtless they had faith before this but now it was multi plied. When there is a tendency upon the part of the child of God to doubt His saving power, a potent remedy may be found in a visit to a rescue mission to see what God continues to do in de livering men from the thralldom of sin.
Pointers on the Lesson Egypt is often thought of in Bible study as the type of the world with its sin and bondage. Going “ down into Egypt” (Isa. 30:2) is suggestive of worldly alliances and living for the things of this life. Trusting “ in the shadow of Egypt” (Isa. 30:3) carries with it the idea of putting confidence in the things of the flesh rather than in the power of God. Thus today’s lesson, having to do with the deliverance of God’s people from bondage in Egypt has many practical applications for God’s people who live today. The Night of Deliverance 12:30,31 It was either a dead son or a dead lamb in every home in Egypt. The plague of the death of the firstborn was the climax to a long series of devastat ing plagues in which God sought to teach Pharaoh and his subjects the fu tility of trusting the impotent gods of Egypt (12:12). .Only Jehovah, the God of Israel, is worthy of confidence. But the Egyptians as a whole refused to re pose faith in Him. In the tenth plague, or the death of the firstborn, God not only brought judgment upon Egypt but He also taught Israel and all succeed ing generations the great truth of re demption by blood. The lamb of the Passover (12:13) became the type of the Lord Jesus Christ, the true Pass- over by whom judgment is borne for every believer (1 Cor. 5:7). Divine Power in Deliverance 14:15-22 The Lord exercised His delivering power on behalf of Israel, when they were yet in Egypt, and we saw some thing of that in the previous sec tion. The deliverance there was definite ly by blood. But when Israel was out of the land of Egypt, God continued to de liver His people. His power in deliver ance is variously seen. The command of the Lord to Israel was that they “ go forward” (v. 15). But they could only go forward as God opened the way (v. 16). God also must control the move ments of Israel’s enemies (vv. 17, 18). Then, too, God assured the hearts of His children by placing the symbols of His presence behind them as a barrier to the Egyptians (vv. 19, 20). Thus what was light to the children of Israel became darkness to the children of Egypt. It is always so. The things of God are foolishness to the children of this world. Light for the Christian be comes darkness to the Christ rejecter. Furthermore, God caused the forces of nature to co-operate with His plan of deliverance (vv. 21-22). A strong east wind answered His command and had a definite part in the dividing of the waters so that Israel went across
