THE KING’S BUSINESS
one particular case the husband had been repeatedly invited to attend, class, but always refused, saying he had no use for such things. At last the class was taken into" the home, both the father and an only son became interested, and finally yielded themselves to the Master. Sickness came and lack o f work made it necessary for the wife and children to return to her people for a time, leaving the hubsand to find work. His testimony was that while things around him looked very dark, his faith and trust in his Lord seemed the only bright spot, and every day the W ord was a real comfort to him, and he was really knowing what fellowship with God meant. In answer to a request, a Bible Woman called on a very old lady (ninety years o f age), whom a Scientist claimed as a con vert. W e found that she was a very meek Christian, not really lacking assurance, but a bit troubled because unable to answer from the W ord some questions asked her by a well-meaning but unwise person. The old lady is very deaf and could easily mis understand statements made to her, but she was very glad o f a visit from a Chris tian, and asked questions about Christian Science. She has a number o f neighbors in Science, and being untaught in the Word, has accepted their statements that Science is “ all right’” and that they “believe in Jesus,” and allowed her nephew to attend the Science Sunday School. When I explained to her just what Science .and Health teaches, she said “O f course I can’t have anything to do with them if tiiey dis believe in Jesus.” W e are sending her some literature to use. A young woman met us at the door one day saying she “had no use for any church; guessed if we did the best we could, that was enough,” and thought to dismiss us with this. A tactful remark engaged her in conversation and the worker drew from her the fact that she once knew that she had been saved, but had gotten so far away from the Master, and had become so bitter, that she had given up all hope and had not attended church in years. Tears
came as we gave her the Word she needed, and she gladly accepted a Gospel o f John, promising to come to Sunday School and church the next week, and thanking us most .earnestly for the call. It has been the privilege o f some o f oui classes to show out what they have been taking in, in a practical way. During the Sunday Campaign we were anxious to give our classes, both o f men and women, at the County Farm the privilege o f attending the meetings at the Tabernacle. I felt that a great blessing would come to the women o f the city Bible classes were they given the privilege o f acting as hostesses to these out-of-town classes, and was not at all dis appointed when the suggestion met with a most hearty response. The First Christian Church readily granted us the use o f kitchen and dining room, and the four city Bible classes, then within reach, provided and served both dainty and substantial meals, at noon and at night for 125 people. Thanks to the Christian Endeavor Society o f the Church o f the Open Door, we were able to treat our guests to ice cream and cake. The ladies o f the Bible classes are still overflowing with the joy which always accompanies giving joy to others, while the out-of-town guests are living over and over .again that one day with its two'opportu nities o f hearing Billy Sunday. For eight months a faithful little woman invited her friend to attend the Bible class, then one day she came and she’s been com ing ever since. In fact when the class work began in the fall she so earnestly desired to have the meeting in her home that we met there. “ I don’t know how to get along without the class,’’ she said. “I don’t see how these women can stay away, they don’t know what they are missing. I don’t seem to care about- anything but the Bible now. My daugther says I am getting too religious for any use, that I have nothing but reli gious books around the house.” It is the W ord o f God that people are hungry for. How blessed that when the Lord said, “ Give ye them to eat,” He at the same time pro vided the food for the hungry multitude.
