THE KING’S BUSINESS

THE SPANISH WORK

R. H. Bender, Supt.

T T OW true are the words o f the prophet who, under the inspiration o f thé Holy Spirit, wrote: “ It is not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, saith the Lord.” Note the following evidences of the Holy Spirit’s work: A fter visiting a certain group for sev eral months, we felt led to call for a decision. On this particular occasion we made use o f a small chart in order, to reach them through the eye, as well as the ear, first telling them about the character o f God, then o f man and his sinful condi tion, and last, but not least, about Jesus as the Sin-bearer. Then, in closing, we asked them when they were going to make a decision and accept the salvation so freely offered. As we called on them, ten, then and there, definitely professed to accept Christ as their Saviour. Another group o f Mexicans work on a ranch and in order to reach them we have to walk a mile or so after we leave the car. W e arrived just as they were finish ing supper, and were invited to sit down and partake with them, after which we all retired to another room, where we sang a hymn and read the Scriptures and preached Jesus unto them. When we started to leave, the young man said: “W e want you to get in the buggy and we will drive you over to the depot,” and while driving over he told us that no one had ever before visited them and given them the Gospel, and, said he, “we all enjoy your talk very much.” This was but our third visit to them and they surely manifested their gratitude toward us. Who knows but what these will very soon accept the Lord Jesus Christ?

These people who live on the ranches do not get to a Mission or church to hear the Gospel, but we praise God that He has given us the privilege o f going into the highways and compelling them to come in. Another evidence o f the Spirit’s wooing is that many families in the railroad sec tion-houses are manifesting a great interest in the Word, for as soon as we arrive, the different members o f the family will gather around to hear us explain the Gospel, and if we use a chart or give an object lesson, they give splendid attention. Recently a marked interest has been noted among the Mexicans, in that they are desirous to obtain a Bible and look into the Scriptures for themselves, to see if these things are true. It is surely a good omen when they have interest enough to purchase a Bible. This, with the desire to hear the preached Word, is an evident token o f an awakening among the Mexicans, for all o f which we praise the Lord and take new courage. Our Mission Sunday School at West Alhambra, after a testing o f a few months in regard to attendance, is picking up again and we have as high as thirty in attend ance. One o f the families converted in this neighborhood, has twin children about three months old. W e held a special ser vice, dedicating them to the Lord and ask ing His special blessing upon them. W e are glad to say that the results above noted, are not due to anything which we offer in the line o f coaxing or material gain. Our only bait is the W ord o f God and the joy o f salvation, and when they once accept Christ we know they will not easily get offended and go back. Our busi ness is to “preach the W ord !”
