devil won’t give up without a struggle.— Torrey. The evil spirit exhibits his feroc­ ity and his defeat, but we read in Luke he did the man no harm.— Exp. Bible. V. 27. They were all amazed. Wonder is not 'self-surrender. Many are content to let their excitement die out, as every violent emotion must, without a change of life.— Chadwick. \ What new doctrine is this? Jewish teach­ ers quoted Scripture, tradition or sayings o f some famous rabbis as authority for what they taught. Jesus taught as one who needed no such justification and even cor­ rected traditions and well known exposi­ tions o f the Law.— Camb. Bible. With authority commandeth spirits. Men tell us* the divinity o f Jesus was an after­ thought. What shall we say to the fact that men observed from the .first a- differ­ ence between the manner of His miracles and all that was recorded in .their Scrip­ tures ?— Chadwick. v. 29. Entered the house. Jesus exer­ cised both a public and a private ministry. Bodily disease as well as spiritual ailments are within the sphere o f our solicitude. v. 22. H e taught as one that had author­ ity. Hearers know the voice o f authority and the Christian teacher should show his supremacy over all other teachers. Real authority is impossible apart from associa­ tion with the Master.— Parker. Others have constructed cisterns in which to store truth or aqueducts to convey it from higher levels but Christ, Himself, is a fountain.-#-. Chadwick. The lapse o f ages makes this authority of Christ more wonderful than at first. The world bows down before something other than his clearness o f logic or subtlety of inference. He still announces where others argue.— Exp. Bible. y. 23. A man with an unclean spirit. How often wilj the observant Christian be startled at the wild surging up, o f evil thought and dark: suggestions which he cannot believe to be his own. Man is not only fallen but assaulted; not only a wan­ dering sheep, but led captive by the devil. —Exp. Bible. Demoniacal possession is quite common today in China and other heathen lands, and is not unknown in our land in certain kinds o f lunacy. and "some - forms o f clairvoyance > and spiritism.— Torrey. , -v. 24., L et ¡ us aloné. Wickedness has, no favor to ask o f purity except to let it alone. — Parker. The presence o f Jesus always stirs up the devil and his minions.— Torrey. Christians are not at liberty to let unclean spirits alone. W e are called to a lifelong contention with them and our preparation must be intensely and increasingly spiritual. —People’s Bible. v. 25. Hold thy peace. Lit., “be muzzled.” Jesus’ answer to the orthodox confession o f the demon was very brief. It is evident that orthodoxy is not salvation. James 2:19.— Torrey. Come out.
