WHATWE’RE ALL MISSING

The North American International Auto Show

In Metro Detroit, when the weather drops below zero, everyone knows it’s time for the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS). It’s like clockwork: As soon as the freezing weather hits, we know the press is in town and the doors to the auto show will open to the public very soon. Personally, I always feel for the journalists who come to report on the show. These people travel here from all over the country at the one time of year Michigan is coldest. They must think our state is a tundra year-round because that’s the only experience they have year after year. I’ve always seen the auto show as a rite of passage. Anyone who lives in this area has gone to the show, no matter how cold it is. The NAIAS has a way of getting downtown and its community moving. Restaurants experience an influx of customers, people talk about nothing else for weeks, and even at Janet Davis, we’re busy with customers coming in asking for their tuxedos and gowns to be ready for the NAIAS charity preview. It almost has the same feeling you get when your favorite sports team is headed to the playoffs. Ever since I was a kid, I’ve been going to the auto show with my family. I remember having so much fun in the excitement and buzz, but one year stands out particularly in my mind. My dad had just bought a Taurus station wagon with rear-facing seats, and that was the best seat going into and leaving the show. I can vividly remember being in one of the parking garages there in the Cobo Arena. As we were driving through one of the circular entrance/exit ramps, I was sitting in the rear-facing seat, and the back window was my own windshield. I could look out and see all the cars lined up behind us and the people coming and going from the show. It was the neatest thing. As a kid, I went a few times, and I’ve even gone several times as an adult. It’s just as exciting as it was back then. I’ve even had a media or an engineering pass so I could walk through before the charity preview. That was fun because there are usually fewer people

— you’re not elbow-to-elbow with the crowd and you can get a good look at the cars on display. I remember walking through and seeing people sitting inside the cars, measuring how far the window shades move and examining which kind of hinge was put into the doors. It’s fascinating to see people look at different aspects of the cars — things that you and I would never think to look at. What I’m most excited for, though, is to get that first look at the newest Mustangs, Corvettes, Jeeps, and the electric cars. In fact, it was seeing an electric Fisker Karma for the first time that led me to find and fall in love with Teslas. I had gone to a show with my brother-in-law who, hearing me talk about the Fisker so much, said, “If you like this car, check out Tesla.” While the Fisker Karma is gone, I still think of it fondly as the start of my new passion. In the past, the NAIAS used to be where every big car was announced and launched. However, with New York and Los Angeles auto shows gaining prominence, that’s no longer the case. As I’m sure my readers know, that is why the NAIAS decided to move the show from January to June, so it could be the very first of all other auto shows. Unfortunately, with what happened last year, the June 2020 auto show didn’t happen, and the 2021 show may also be canceled. Personally, I’m hoping the NAIAS can take place again in as safe a way as possible. I can’t wait to get downtown and enjoy the hustle and bustle the show ignites in everyone, even if we have to bundle up against minus-10 degree weather.

Renovating Your Fixer-Upper

QUALITY CLEANING FOR YOUR BEDDING:

You’ll Be Sleeping on a Cloud

You just bought a fixer-upper, and you’re planning on turning the drab old property into the home of your dreams — or into the perfect investment. While you may have crunched the numbers and decided just how you want to begin your renovations, pause before you base the entire decision on a budget. When it comes to getting your renovations just right, you should consider a few other factors. DO YOU HAVE A TIMELINE? This is especially important if you’re not planning on living in the property you just bought. But having an end in sight — and a step-by-step plan for how to get there — is important in any case. Don’t launch into your renovations with only a rough idea of when you want to finish certain projects. Make a timeline. DO YOU KNOW WHERE TO START? When you’re renovating a house, it’s best to start somewhere specific — rather than initiating several projects at once. Complete the renovations for one room before moving onto the next one. Starting too many projects in different rooms is likely to leave you feeling frustrated and overwhelmed. As a tip, start renovating the room where you spend the most time first. ARE YOU PREPARED FOR THINGS TO GO WRONG? Even if you have a plan, expect setbacks. Though you probably thoroughly inspected the property before buying it, you might not have caught everything in need of renovation. After all, when you start tearing into walls and ripping up carpets, who knows what you might find? More than likely, you’re going to find more ways to spend money on your new property. Instead of letting it get you down, expect it, reevaluate, and move forward. DID YOU HIRE A PROFESSIONAL DESIGNER? Hiring a professional may seem like a luxury, but since you’re already most likely spending a lot of money, why not make sure the finished product is something really special? By relying on a trained eye, you can ensure the renovation meets all your expectations and then some!

After a long day, nothing beats sliding into bed with freshly laundered blankets or wrapping yourself up in your clean comforter. The bedding you have provides comfort at the end of the day and affects your sleep quality. As we enter the new year and many people start making goals and plans for themselves, it can be beneficial to include a few plans involving your bedding. According to the National Sleep Foundation, people spend approximately 49–60 hours or more per week sleeping in their beds. While this does give our bodies a chance to recharge throughout the night, it’s also quite a lot of time for oil, dirt, and other debris to accumulate. What's more, the foundation points out: “Without regularly cleaning, dirty sheets can contribute to allergies, skin breakouts, asthma, and more. For your health and sleep quality, it’s important to keep things clean.” This is why washing or changing sheets once a week or every other week is recommended. Before you throw your sheets into the washer, however, it’s important to first consider how they should be cleaned. A professional cleaner will know exactly how to properly wash, dry, and press the fabric so it is both cleaner and softer. After you’ve enlisted the services of a professional cleaner to clean and hand- iron your high thread count sheets, you will be amazed at their transformation. At Janet Davis Cleaners, providing our customers with quality cleaning is what we do day after day, and helping you sink down into cloud-like sheets is what we do best. If you know someone who’s been searching for the right laundry service to properly clean their sheets, tell them you know exactly who can help. Tell them to reach out to our office, and our team of professionals will take care of the rest.

HUMIDITY FIGHTING DUVET This duvet comforter is perfect for anyone wanting to avoid overheating or excess humidity. WHITE BAY DOWN COMFORTER If you’re having trouble choosing the perfect comforter for your home, The Company Store has a solution for you! With their White Bay Down Comforter, you can choose between four levels of warmth, five colors, and six sizes. Whatever your needs may be, you can find the perfect comforter with one of their Responsible Down Standard-certified comforters.

Fill power refers to the amount of space the down takes up. Comforters with high fill power trap more air and are warmer. The comforter’s construction determines where and how the down is contained. A grid pattern often prevents movement, resulting in evenly spaced down with fewer cold spots and lumps. Cleanliness is also important and varies from comforter to comforter. Some comforters are machine- washable while others must be dry-cleaned. Let's take a look at four comforters with all three of these characteristics.

DOWN FEATHER BLEND COMFORTER Home Depot’s Down Feather Blend Comforter covers all three categories well. By blending feathers with 100% cotton and combining this with quality construction, this comforter offers even warmth and comfort. While quality comforters can be expensive, this comforter is affordable and machine-washable.
