THE 2014 SONY BREACH TOLD US A LOT
Why Didn’t People Listen?
High-profile data breaches are de rigueur in 2021. Several come to mind immediately, such as the Colonial Oil Pipeline shutdown hack in May that cut about 45% of the East Coast’s supply until it was fixed, or the holiday-season hack six months ago that left egg on the face of the U.S. Government, as well as some of the highest-profile tech security firms. However, back in December 2014, it was a different story. Hacks were on the public’s radar, but mostly as a result of the past summer’s celebrity cellphone picture hack. And then Sony got hit hard. What’s most embarrassing, perhaps, is that it wasn’t the first time. As you know, rule one of cybersecurity is that everybody is a target. You can’t prepare if you don’t think you need to, and everybody needs to, especially big companies like Sony. They’d been hacked before and hadn’t taken serious steps to remedy the problems. Similarly, cybersecurity is not all about technology . Most people know about phone phishing and human engineering. But physical security goes far beyond that. It doesn’t matter how good your technology is if you leave administrators logged in on unattended computers or allow SPOTLIGHT ON RUSS KRILOFF Tech supporter Russ Kriloff knows the value of a good working environment. “We’ve got a strong team that really works well together here at AZCOMP,” he says. “And the work is all about helping small practices with the Medisoft and Lytech softwares and add-ons.” Some of those add-ons, like Autoremind, really help offices out a lot, and Russ has seen that firsthand.
guests to wander unattended in your space — both of which were common at Sony headquarters.
Then again, it’s not like they had the tech side nailed down, either. In fact, the company didn’t see the point of many protective measures. Before the breach, one executive even said, “I will not spend $10 million to avoid a $1 million loss.”
The total cost of the Sony breach? A cool $35 million and counting.

Between those two things, Russ has been happy to stay with AZCOMP for over a decade. And he’s not the only one. “Things have changed a bit, but the strong core values means it has remained a great company to work for.” When he isn’t working, you’ll find Russ at home barbecuing for family. “My wife’s vegetarian,” he adds, so there are always new grilling recipes to try.
