By Neili SURFING JAWS ON HOLY WATER?

I’ve been thinking a lot about our core values and how things have played out in the pandemic. I’ve seen a lot of innovation in many fields, but the ones that impress me the most are the ones who don’t care “how, or why, or what will others think about me” and instead just get it done.

This is totally what we mean when we say “Surfing Jaws,” or, for that matter, “Create and Innovate.” Did everyone like what Father Pelc was doing? No! Some in his community found it distasteful or disrespectful. But like so many of America’s faithful, he didn’t hesitate in his duty. Father Pelc had a job to do, and he knew you cannot please everybody. Other communities found value in dressing up for the virtual service so that they put in the same effort as they would if they could go to worship in one place together. I’ve already mentioned drive-in services, and I’m sure that there are boat-in services in some places right now, as well. For many, it had been over 52 Sundays since they’d last been together in the same room. As we get ready to return to “normal” life, perhaps we can take a lesson from these folks — and perhaps some of their creative energy, as well. Good luck this month, and don’t hesitate to do what needs to be done.

That, in my book, is Surfing Jaws.

And nothing epitomizes that more to me than some of the ways faith communities across American were able to continue to serve their members, while also respecting health and safety guidelines. I saw a video from CBS that documented a few of those, and I couldn’t help but share it with you. Car choirs and drive-in services are one thing, but my favorite has to be Father Tim Pelc of St. Ambrose Catholic Church. Tasked with sprinkling holy water on baskets while still keeping a safe distance, he came up with a fantastic solution: Use a squirt gun!
