Hard Work Still Works DR. SUKKAR ISN’T AFRAID TO LEARN SOMETHING NEW

Sometimes, the most challenging moments in life are the ones we learn from the most. These challenges don’t have to be life or death but small moments where we put ourselves to the test to grow. When I was 50, I pitted myself against one of the most challenging obstacles I’ve ever faced: returning to graduate school for my Executive MBA. If you’re wondering why I would go back to school when I was already running my plastic surgery practice, there were a few reasons. First, education has always been a massive part of my life and upbringing. My parents are extremely smart individuals, but they started a family when they were fairly young, and my mother and father had to leave college to care for us when we were growing up. My dad was the catalyst for most of the conversations around education and was a huge influence on our educational path. But when my siblings and I were older, my mom started taking classes again, slowly working toward that degree she always wanted. At the time, my younger sister was also in college, so my mom decided to schedule her classes so that she and my sister could graduate college together — and they did.

Watching my mother pursue her dreams of higher education inspired me and showed everyone in our family that it’s never too late to learn. This leads me to my second reason for returning to school at 50; I wanted to learn how to expand my practice from a business standpoint. I had over 15 years of learning and training to be a surgeon, but I couldn’t even make a spreadsheet to map out financials or other business information. I had a strong desire to learn what makes a business successful, from internal practices to spending habits and marketing. I was fortunate to have a very busy, successful practice based on hard work, great patients and results, and some on-the-job informal learning, but I wanted to fine-tune the process with a formal education in business. And lastly, I decided to challenge myself by re- entering school to show my kids that hard work still works best. Two of my older children were in college at the time, and they almost constantly whined about how college is different these days and that someone from my generation wouldn’t understand the struggles of modern- day students. So, I joined them, just as my mom did with my sister, to pursue the knowledge I needed for my business to adapt and grow. I was officially a business student! I’ll be honest; it wasn’t easy. I continued working at the practice as the main surgeon on weekdays and attended in-person business classes every other Friday and Saturday. On top of making the in-person classes, I completed a lot of homework, projects, and tests after working at the clinic all day. Part of what made this all the more challenging is that it was new material to me (as I said, I didn’t even know how to make a spreadsheet), and I was starting at business ground zero.

But despite the learning curve and long hours, I worked hard. During this time, I lived by a Jerry Rice quote and even wrote it in my office to keep me focused. The quote? “Today, I will do what others won’t, so tomorrow, I can do what others can’t.” And this mindset of pushing through every day to improve my business helped me through business school. Over time, I learned how to do spreadsheets and became well-versed in business lingo and successful strategies. I graduated with my Master of Business Administration degree and was one of only three students in my graduating class asked to join the honor society. Putting myself up against this challenge ultimately gave me the confidence and tools to expand my practice; it set the stage for The Clinic for Plastic Surgery we know today. So, don’t be afraid to challenge yourself to learn something new — no matter how old you are or how difficult it seems. You’ll never regret how much you grow along the way! –Dr. Sam Sukkar “WHEN I WAS 50, I PITTED MYSELF AGAINST ONE OF THE MOST CHALLENGING OBSTACLES I’VE EVER FACED: RETURNING TO GRADUATE SCHOOL FOR MY EXECUTIVE MBA.”

Need a Nutritional Boost? WHAT IS THE NORDIC DIET?

slow obesity rates and unsustainable farming practices in Nordic countries, but it might help residents of the U.S., too! The Nordic diet emphasizes consuming food high in protein, complex carbohydrates, and healthy fats. Fruits, vegetables, and seafood are common on Nordic diet menus, but what separates the Nordic diet from the others is that it uses canola oil, which has less saturated fat than olive oil and other processed options. You’re supposed to eat a decreased amount of sugar and twice the amount of fiber and seafood than a typical diet. Some phenomenal physical health benefits come with switching over to the Nordic diet. It helps reduce inflammation throughout the body and can even reduce your risk of getting Type 2 diabetes, cancer, and heart disease. Many people who tried the diet noticed decreased

cholesterol and lower blood pressure while they followed these guidelines, even saying they lost weight or had an easier time staying in shape. You may have seen the Nordic diet on the news after Noma, a three-Michelin-star restaurant known for its Nordic menu, recently closed in Copenhagen. Food critics and patrons rated this restaurant as one of the best in the world, but the owner found the grueling hours and intense workplace culture unsustainable. So, still wanting to work in the food industry, he converted Noma into a food laboratory. You can change and improve your diet anytime, but experts recommend the Nordic diet for its many health benefits. Make sure you pick up whole grains, fruits, vegetables, fatty fish, and other items next time you go to the grocery store. You’ll be amazed how what you eat can improve how you feel.

Every other month, new dieting fads seem to take the world by storm. Some popular diets aren’t beneficial, while others have incredible health benefits, so how do people know what’s worth trying? Luckily, one recent diet out there may be a little bit more credible than the rest: the Nordic diet. Nutritionists, scientists, and chefs decided to create this diet in 2004 to help

Stop Snoring With … Mouth Tape? THE PROBLEM WITH THIS TIKTOK TREND

In 2019, the founders of a company called SomniFix strolled onto the screen of the reality TV show “Shark Tank” — and a TikTok trend was born.

and avoiding bad breath. Unfortunately, the Cleveland Clinic also explains that only a few small studies of 10–36 patients each have explored the effectiveness of mouth taping, and those studies had mixed results. The clinic quoted a sleep medicine specialist, Dr. Cinthya Pena

DR. SUKKAR'S Word Search *Bring in a completed word search and get $30 off your next IV treatment! SomniFix makes a product called “Mouth Strips,” which the company describes as a skin-safe adhesive that holds your mouth shut while you sleep. According to the company’s website, the product is supposed to reduce snoring, help people with sleep apnea use their continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines correctly, boost sleep quality, and encourage breathing through the nose instead of just the mouth. Mark Burhenne, D.D.S., wrote about this on Ask the Dentist. “If you’re breathing through your mouth while you sleep at night, it’s a big deal,” he explained. “Not only does it reduce the quality of your sleep, but it disrupts the balance of your oral microbiome and makes you more prone to tooth decay.” Burhenne has legitimate concerns in regard to mouth breathing, but does that mean mouth taping is the answer? The Cleveland Clinic sheds some light on this topic by saying that nose breathing while you sleep is vital for preventing dry mouth and sore throat, lowering blood pressure, keeping airborne allergens out of your body,

Orbea. “Most of the evidence is anecdotal,” she said. “There is not strong enough evidence to support that mouth tape is beneficial. Mouth taping is not part of our current practice to treat any sleep disorder. Nonetheless, in patients with sleep apnea, we may recommend mouth taping or to wear a chin strap to decrease an air leak while you’re using a CPAP machine at night.”
