CONTENTS

Dear Friends, Irvine Senior Services has wonderful programs and events scheduled this spring! Mark your calendars for Better Together May 3, a family-friendly morning filled with fun activities for all ages. Join the Irvine Multicultural Association for Exploring Our World May 7 to learn about the history and traditions of Mongolia (see Page 4). Be sure to sign-up for the Spring Into Health Fitness Challenge beginning April 1, where the more you exercise, the more opportunities you’ll have to win prizes (see Page 15). Learn more about these events and other programs in this issue of the Connection . Our programs would not be possible without the help of our remarkable volunteers. April is National Volunteer Month and a great time to thank the more than 630 individuals who share their time and talents to serve older adults in Irvine. In 2024, our volunteers contrib- uted more than 20,000 hours in various areas including preparing and serving meals in the Rose Garden Café, delivering meals to homebound seniors, and teaching interactive classes both virtually and in-person. Please join us in celebrating National Volunteer Month by expressing your gratitude for the continued service of our dedicated volunteers. For more information on our programs and services, visit one of our three senior centers or irvineseniors.org .

Spring 2025

Build a Safer Community

Creating safer communities begins with prevention. By staying informed and learning about effective crime prevention strategies, we can work together to reduce risks and build a safer community. Below are eight simple, proactive steps to contribute to a safer environment.

5. Shred: Crosscut or confetti shred outdated documents with personal information. 6. Inventory your belongings: This includes serial numbers, photos, receipts, and other identifying information. Include unique sentimental items. 7. Check on your accounts: Regularly monitor bank accounts and safety deposit boxes. 8. Report suspicious activity: If you see something suspicious, don’t hesitate to report it. Prompt reporting can help prevent crime and increase the likelihood of catching perpetrators early. In an emergency, call 911. For a non- emergency in Irvine, call 949-724-7000.

1. Strengthen your home’s security: Secure all doors and windows with deadbolts. Consider installing motion-sensor lights around the exterior and a security system with cameras to monitor your property. 2. Lock your vehicles: Always lock your car, even when parked in your garage. Don’t leave valuables in plain sight. Park in well-lit areas whenever possible. 3. Get to know your neighbors: Fostering good relationships with neighbors helps create a sense of community. When you know your neighbors, it’s easier to spot suspicious activity. 4. Update all your passwords: Make them complex and use two-way authentication.

For more information, email Shiree Lind, Community Outreach Irvine Police Department, slind@cityofirvine.org . Look for upcoming Crime Prevention classes at yourirvine.org.
