KEYSTROKE MONTHLY THE

JUNE 2021 REMEMBER, PAL SAVES KIDS Rescuing Kids From Hot, Locked Cars, Free of Charge According to the National Safety Council, both 2018 and 2019 saw record numbers of children in the U.S. die of heatstroke after being left in a hot car during the summertime. In total, 53 children died this way during each of those years. Numbers were considerably less in 2020, but that may have been a product, at least in part, of the pandemic keeping more people from traveling out and about. During the hot summer months, the internal temperature of a vehicle can go up 20 degrees F in 10 minutes. In Kentucky and southern Indiana, the average high temperature from May to August ranges from 80 to 90 degrees, which means your car can easily heat to above 100 degrees in a short amount of time. It doesn’t take long for a child to be in danger of heatstroke after being locked in the car. It’s a story all too common; all it takes is a sudden change in the schedule or an unexpected deviation from routine. Since 1995, the year we opened PAL in Kentucky, Pop-A-Lock’s car door unlocking technicians have used their expertise to prevent this tragedy in Kentucky and southern Indiana through our free community service, PAL Saves Kids. If you see a child locked in a car on a hot summer day and you call our number, we will make your call our top priority, and our work will be free of charge. Since PAL Saves Kids began, we have saved thousands of kids from locked cars — including around 6,800 in the Louisville area and around 5,600 in and around Lexington. Along with saving kids from dangerously hot vehicles, we’ll also give top priority to freeing animals. While the exact number of pets that die from being left in hot cars every year is unknown, it’s more likely to happen in the hottest months of the year to hundreds of pets. If you see a child or pet locked in a hot car, please call 911 before calling us. That way, you double your chances of someone arriving quickly to free the child or pet. However, while we at Pop-A-Lock are happy to assist in rescuing children and pets from hot cars, we want to focus just as much on prevention and education so we don’t have to unlock as many hot cars in the first place.

You can use a number of strategies to remind yourself to take your children out of the car with you on your errands. Placing the child’s favorite toy, blanket, or diaper bag in the front passenger seat can be a good reminder of the precious cargo in the back seat. You can also put your purse or bag in the back seat so you will see the child when you retrieve it. One woman I knew would take her left shoe off and put it in the back seat while she drove to remind herself that her child was back there. Locking a child in a hot car can happen to anyone; all it takes is one moment of forgetfulness. Don’t let yourself forget, and if you see a child in a hot car, call the police and the expert car door unlocking technicians at Pop-A-Lock. -Doug Barnes

The Top 3 Weekend Remodel Projects for Summer 2021

Want to add a little pizazz to your home without spending a lot of time on it? Then this article is for you! There are several small projects you can easily do over a weekend that can refresh the look and feel of your home, inside and out. Take a look! Go with the flow. When was the last time you changed out your kitchen faucet? What about your showerheads? Refreshing the faucets around the home, whether in the kitchen or bathroom, can make a big difference. Not only do newer faucets look great, but you may also find one that improves upon the functionality of your old one. The same with showerheads — improve the flow of water and improve your next shower. What about touch-sensitive faucets? That’s a thing! You have lots of options to consider. Light it up. It’s easy to overlook outdoor lighting. You might have a floodlight or maybe some simple overhead lighting if you have a covered porch or patio, but why not take it up a notch? String lights are hot this year, and they come in outdoor varieties. You can make your favorite outdoor space — whether a porch, patio, or deck

— more inviting with string lights. Drape them in creative ways to enhance the space and design. It’ll be Instagram-ready in no time!

Create a fabulous front entrance. Every home should have a welcoming front entrance — it’s usually the first impression people have of your residence! Spruce up your home with a freshly painted door (or if you’re feeling really bold, an entirely new door ). Don’t forget about the foliage — it might be a good time to trim or sculpt the foliage around the front entrance. Or, if it’s looking particularly drab, find some interesting pots and plant some new flowers or shrubs to enliven the space. One more thing: Don’t forget the lighting, either. Installing new lighting fixtures can go a long way in giving your front entrance a fresh, welcoming look.

(SOME OF) THE GREATEST HEISTS IN HISTORY Could These Incredible Robberies Happen Today?

Burglaries and robberies are crimes of opportunity. Typically, if the door is locked, the cameras are on, or your alarm sounds, it will be enough to keep intruders away. However, sometimes the prize beyond the security is attractive enough, and the intruders are just desperate enough to take on the challenge. If they get away, sometimes these thieves go down in history, venerated as the perpetrators of the greatest heists of all time. These are some of their stories. THE BANCO CENTRAL BURGLARY This heist was once listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the greatest bank robbery in the world. In 2005, in Fortaleza, Brazil, a gang of 25 burglars created a fake landscaping business so they could spend three months digging a 256-foot-long underground tunnel to a nearby bank vault. They stole roughly 160 million Brazilian real, which was worth around $71.6 million. Out of the 25, eight were arrested and only 20 million real recovered. THE ANTWERP DIAMOND HEIST Sometimes, thieves live closer than you think. Leonardo Notarbartolo orchestrated a robbery of the Antwerp diamond center in 2003 after having lived right next to the center for three years to gain credibility

as a diamond merchant. He and his team then used that credibility to gain access to large quantities of gold, diamonds, and jewelry, then forced their way into 123 steel safety deposit boxes, each with unique combination locks. While Notarbartolo was caught afterward, his entire crew remains at large today. D.B. COOPER Among hardcore conspiracy theorists and everyday Americans alike, D.B. Cooper remains something of a legend, even almost 50 years after he conducted the only unsolved act of air piracy in American history. In 1971, a man going by the alias D.B. Cooper extorted $200,000 while aboard a plane between Portland and Seattle and then leaped with his spoils from the plane with a parachute. He was never found, and the FBI has amassed roughly 60 volumes of theories since then. You’re unlikely to face D.B. Cooper-level burglary threats in your home, car, or place of business, but you should still protect your home, car, and business from theft with security solutions from Pop-A-Lock. YOUR SUMMER STORM SURVIVAL GUIDE

Go-To Tips for Families

June marks the beginning of summer fun, but something far more dangerous lurks — thunderstorm season. Residents in the Midwest and in the South can experience up to 110 thunderstorms each year. ( Fun fact: Florida is often the stormiest and can see anywhere from 80 to more than 100 days of thundering weather.) Yet, no matter how experienced you are at riding out thunderstorms, each one has the potential to be dangerous. Before the clouds roll in this summer, consult this helpful guide.

STAY CALM IN THE STORM.

Seek shelter immediately in one of your identified areas. Avoid using landline phones and unplug all appliances, like toasters, TVs, or computers. (Play games, read books, or tell creepy stories to keep the family entertained.) But don’t stand or sit near windows because high winds can knock trees or other debris through the window. Staying away from your sinks and showers is also vital! If lightning strikes your home, it can travel through the water stream and strike you.

PREPARE PROPERLY AHEAD OF TIME.

FOLLOW SAFETY GUIDELINES DURING A POWER OUTAGE.

Take a few moments at the beginning of each summer to review the basics. Create or update an emergency kit — include water bottles, blankets, flashlights, and portable chargers. Nonperishable foods, like jerky or granola bars, can also be beneficial. You should also include a weather radio, which will work when the power goes out and can provide updates from the National Weather Service. Then, identify places where you can take shelter, like in your home, vehicle, or nearby buildings. Store outdoor tools and toys properly and trim trees as needed to prevent wind debris.

Don’t panic! Utilize your emergency kit and rely on your flashlights, rather than light candles, which could start a fire. Avoid opening your refrigerator or freezer as to limit how much cold air escapes and never eat meat or dairy products that are 40 degrees F or warmer. You’re also at risk for increased exposure to carbon monoxide if you use a gas stove, generator, or space heater to warm up. Avoid doing this as much as possible. Listen for updates on your weather radio and evacuate when necessary.
