Rasmussen Informs, Enlightens FBA With Political Polling Data BY LEN PRAZYCH Scott Rasmussen is widely recognized as one of the world’s leading pollsters with a reputation for having his “finger on the nation’s politi- cal pulse,” making him a sought-after commentator on political matters and on the speaking circuit, where he appeared earlier this month to deliver a compelling presentation at the Fibre Box Association’s Annual Meeting at the Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo, Florida. Rasmussen’s polling career sprung from his earlier initiatives as an innovator; in 1978, he co-founded ESPN, yes, that ESPN, with his father Bill, when they capitalized on new satellite communications technol-

AICC/BCN Seeks Entries For 2024 Innovator of the Year AICC, The Independent Packaging Associa- tion, in collaboration with Board Converting News , has announced the call for entries for the 2024 Innovator of the Year competition. The award aims to celebrate and recognize outstanding innovations by AICC Associate Members. This year will highlight innovations in machinery. The competition shines a spotlight on ad- vancements within the packaging industry, particularly innovations in equipment, prod- ucts, or services directly related to the me- chanical converting process. The mechanical converting process en- compasses all operations involving direct contact with corrugated, folding carton, or rigid box substrates. This includes but is not limited to printing, cutting, creasing, scoring, stitching, gluing, material handling, and other related activities. Innovations must significantly enhance ef- ficiency, quality, productivity, or safety. As the premier platform for recognizing technologi- cal excellence, the competition offers AICC Associate Members a distinctive opportunity to showcase their innovations. CONTINUED ON PAGE 3

Brazilian Pulp Producer Suzano Wages $15B To Acquire IP Reuters reported last week that Brazilian pulp and paper company Suzano has approached US-based International Paper (IP) to express interest in an all-cash acquisition that would be worth almost $15 billion, according to people fa- miliar with the matter. The news came less than a month after IP announced that it has reached an agreement to acquire British pack- aging firm DS Smith for $9.9 billion, beating out a rival bid from UK-based Mondi. The deal is set to close by the fourth quarter of 2024. IP issued a release last week saying that it has no com- ment on “rumors or speculation” contained in recent me- dia reports: “As industry conditions continue to improve, IP will come out of a cyclical bottom for earning. The compa- ny is also focused on completing its previously announced combination with DS Smith, which offers a unique and highly-compelling opportunity to create significant share- holder value above its base plan.” Suzano, one of the world’s largest pulp manufacturers, has communicated its $42-per-share offer to IP’s board of directors verbally, and could submit a formal bid in the coming days, Reuters reported. IP is poised to reject Suzano’s offer as inadequate, one of the sources said.

each year who have shown an interest in the corrugated converting industry. Each year, the trustees of the J. Richard Troll Memori- al Scholarship Fund grant monetary scholarships to three undergraduate students and one graduate student who are majoring in packaging engineering or a related pack- aging field. The fund was established to honor the memo- ry of the late J. Richard Troll, a founder of the AICC and the International Corrugated Packaging Foundation. “I believe that donating to this industry-specific foun- dation will help encourage the young adults who already have careers in the packaging industry to continue to im- prove their knowledge and skills,” said Jay Carman, Presi- dent of StandFast Packaging. Studies have shown that manufacturing companies that can demonstrate investment in industry-related employee education are more likely to fill open positions and retain team members than those that cannot. Foundation funds will be used, in part, for in-person, goal-based training programs for manufacturing floor teams. The FPE is uniquely positioned to reduce the train- ing expense for AICC member companies and the indus- try. The Foundation will support educational and scientific research, and in-kind support to educational institutions for curriculum development growing the knowledge base available to everyone.

No Lights. No Camera. All Action.

Make a stronger, lighter and more sustainable corrugated blank using less glue by implementing a “brick” style pattern developed by Baumer hhs. This pattern creates a stronger bond using less glue. Our new all-electric PX 1000 applicators with over a billion cycle life can easily apply the pattern with clean cutoff and accurate placement. The PGD 1000 sensor is there to show your customer that every box was properly glued so you’ll never end up on some gag reel. You can be the star with The CorrBox solution from Baumer hhs.

PGD 1000 Monitoring Sensor • Measure the glue proximity to the edge of the tab and avoid squeeze-out so you deliver an accurately glued box every time. • The printing on the carton does not effect the hybrid sensor’s ability to read the bead. Black, white, plaid or polka dot, the sensor is not bothered, so neither are you. • No UV additives needed for detection saves you money, time and effort.

PX 1000 Cold Glue Applicator • Extremely fast and powerful closing force means no drips or tailing so your first box is a good box. • Strong armature activation easily handles viscosity fluctuations and will work with a large variety of adhesives. • Fast action coil means you can now stitch your beads at higher running speeds lowering adhesive consumption up to 70% and improving board output.

different paperboard, Century looks forward to its new Rapida in using its unique capability of supporting these various substrates in an efficient and optimum manner.

Methuen, Massachusetts based Century Box, a provider of folding cartons for store brand food and consumer prod- ucts, announced they are investing in a new Koenig & Bau- er Rapida press. “Being a true packaging partner for our clients is the foremost responsibility for any folding carton manufactur- er including our firm,” says David Kagan, CEO of Century Box, who oversees the company along with his brother Mark Kagan, Chief Growth Officer. “We have garnered a best-in-class reputation since we were established in 1978 to offer our clients the full array of both domestic and internationally procured paperboard for their folding carton jobs. To continue as leaders in our market, our management team decided to pursue a new fully automated updated press last year and we are excit- ed to welcome our new Koenig & Bauer Rapida 145 sev- en-color large format this summer.” The new press, which will replace an existing Koenig & Bauer press, offers state-of-the-art upgrades both from a technology and manufacturing perspective. Top of the list is speed, quality, and automation. The new Rapida 145 will be significantly faster and will more than double Century’s large format manufacturing capacity. As client requests have grown to include a variety of

As for press automation, Century said its customers will appreciate its high-quality inspection systems, in which the press scans each and every sheet. This is especially important as Century has seen the proliferation of private label packaging. A single branded SKU that ran five to 10 years ago has now exploded into 20-30 SKUs in today’s marketplace. Century’s ability to manage and quickly produce jobs with proliferated SKUs has driven its growth over the past five years. From left, Mark Kagan, Chief Growth Officer; Al Kagan, the firm’s founder; and David Kagan, CEO.

tucky, paper mill in 2011. Most recently, he led Domtar’s entry into the packaging business and was responsible for building and leading the business structure needed to produce and sell containerboard with a winning customer value proposition. Steve recently shared his thoughts about the paper and packaging business’ 2023 performance and 2024 outlook. What are the paper and packaging business’ main objec- tives for 2024? First and foremost, it is to continue our safety journey. Nothing we do across our enterprise is worth getting hurt. In 2024, we want to reinforce our position as the essen- tial paper supplier to the best customers. To do that, we intend to maintain our leading market share in communi- cations papers and continue to evaluate ways to grow our thermal and specialty offerings. Earlier this year, we an-

As Domtar, Resolute Forest Products and Paper Excel- lence continue integrating into one company within the Paper Excellence Group, their legacy businesses have re-

structured into three business units — Paper and Packaging, Pulp and Tissue and Wood Products.

nounced our decision to indefinitely curtail paper operations at the Ashdown Mill to align our production capacity with our cus- tomer demand. On the pulp side, our focus is to grow our softwood pulp productivity and have a safe, successful restart of the Ashdown pulp dryer. All of this requires a commitment to our customers as well as manufacturing excellence. How is the entry into the packaging mar- ket? In January, we celebrated the first an- niversary of the Kingsport Mill producing its first roll of 100-percent recycled con- tainerboard. The mill is now home to the second-largest recycled containerboard machine in North America and is the larg- est manufacturer of recycled products in the state of Tennessee. We’re very excited about our entry into the containerboard market. We are proud of the progress we made over the course of the year — and recognize there is more work to be done. Our customers are pleased with our prod- uct; we appreciate their ongoing support. Our focus for 2024 is to ramp the mill up to full productivity and to continue to build our domestic book of business with inde- pendent converting customers. We are also evaluating other potential future con- tainerboard conversion projects within our network. What are your thoughts on the integra- tion with Paper Excellence and Resolute? I’m grateful for the time and energy our teams have put into the integration efforts. I’m excited and encouraged by the level of collaboration and sharing that I see every day across the business.

The integration effort is a tremendous learning oppor- tunity for all of us. I’ve been through several large mergers and acquisitions in my career, and I’ve personally learned and grown in each of those situations. We’ve done an ex- cellent job in sharing what we do well and in learning from others to really accelerate our continuous improvement as a team. I’m proud of what we accomplished in 2023, and it will continue to be one of our key focus areas for 2024. What kind of results has the integration yielded for the business? I’m particularly proud on the customer front. We’ve real- ly come together as a team and made sure that we’re go- ing to the customer with one face and with one commercial strategy. The commercial and manufacturing operations teams have also made significant progress optimizing our mill network’s capabilities by transferring production of different product grades to better meet customer needs. While there is still work to be done, the teams continue to focus on putting the right products at the right locations to optimize our capabilities and cost structure. It is all made possible by the flexibility within the system created by our combined breadth and scope. It’s also important to highlight the fabulous job our glob- al procurement team has done to leverage our collective spend by consolidating our spending with fewer suppliers to negotiate better pricing, better terms and better service.

PRINTCHEK REPRESENTS A NEW FRONTIER IN PRINT QUALITY ASSURANCE FOR THE CORRUGATED CARDBOARD INDUSTRY PrintChek uses a series of line scan cameras to capture an image of each sheet across its entire span before being die-cut. Every sheet's size, rotation, and print quality are then compared to your set “golden standard” to identify defects as small as 2mm like skew, spots, hickeys, smears, color deviation, missing print, and more. Using PrintChek in conjunction with MeasurementChek allows you to remotely monitor production and quality statistics which you can then export via Excel for statistical analysis.

or speeches, it’s events happening in the real world. Ras- mussen confessed that he is an optimist, mainly because he looks at more data about what the American people think than just about anybody else and not just about pol- itics; he analyzes data about their culture, about their life, about what they’re seeing, and about their attitudes. “The bottom line is that Americans overwhelmingly continue to believe in the founding ideals of freedom, equality and self-governance, and they continue to broadly embrace what I might call Judeo-Christian values,” he said. Fundamental Assumptions In looking to the future, Rasmussen said he needed to share the most important business lesson he learned from his past. He explained how back in the 1970s, the world of sports on television was simply terrible. There was only one college football game on every weekend. There was no such thing as March Madness. There was no talk of col-

ber,” he said as he began his presentation. “I realize that if I don’t answer that right up front, you won’t listen to any- thing else I’m going to say so I’ll get that out of the way.” He paused for effect. “If the election was held today, Don- ald Trump would win, the Republicans would control the Senate and they would probably control the House with a little safer margin than they have today. But as many of you may be aware, the election is not being held today, it’s be- ing held in November. And if you want me to tell you who’s going to win in November, then tell me what the world will be like in November.” Rasmussen conceded that polling indicates the election is indeed close; Republicans think they’re winning, Demo- crats think it’s winnable for them but what’s really going to shape the election is not brilliant campaign strategies

lege women’s sports or women’s sports at all, and most Major League baseball teams couldn’t even get their games televised. “The reason that the new satellite broadcasting technology was so signifi- cant was that we were able to send a sig- nal out from any event to all of America via satellite for less money than it cost to send the same signal around the state of Con- necticut via traditional landline,” he said. “We were excited about this. Imagine, we had the idea for all sports, all day, ev- ery day and we were convinced that if we share shared it with anybody, they would steal the idea from us. We went to eight different broadcast companies and every one of them laughed us out of the room and said our idea would never work.” Then the Rasmussens went to Getty Oil to pitch their idea, after which the multina- tional conglomerate made a $100 million commitment on an industry that did not yet exist. For perspective, understand that the fledgling HBO was in only 400,000 house- holds for eight hours a day. “Getty exec- utives asked me about my projections for 1988 and because I was young and good with numbers, I gave a totally precise but utterly worthless answer,” Rasmussen said. “Getty’s people also didn’t have an idea of what the revenue would be in 1988 than we did, so what we needed to look at were fundamental assumptions.” The fundamentals came down to whether or not cable television companies would accept this kind of sports program- ming the Rasmussens were proposing. At the time, most cable systems only had six or 12 channels so it wasn’t necessarily

a sure thing that father and son would find an audience for sports 24 hours a day. Most importantly, they weren’t sure advertisers would follow. The executives at Getty Oil, however, believed they would and made exactly the right assessment: if the fundamentals were right, this was going to be a big win, and if it’s not, it’s going to be a “dry hole.” “Getty made decisions like this every day in the oil business and, fortunately, they coughed up $100 million and ESPN came into being,” said Rasmussen. “And by the way, there were 12 million cable households in the US at the time and I projected by the end of the 1980s ESPN

would be in 30 million house- holds, which seemed a little ambitious. In fact, by the end of the ‘80s, ESPN was in 60 million households. The les- son here is that when the fundamentals are right all the other details begin to fall into place. That’s why it’s im- portant to recognize the key things in your industry, what- ever you’re analyzing.” Politically speaking, Ras- mussen took a fundamental

short- and long-term approach for the nation, the short- term being between now and November. “In the political world in an election year, the single most important funda- mental is the president’s job approval rating. Nothing else comes close,” he said. “Joe Biden’s job approval rating is lower than any president’s in the history of polling at this point in his term. If you looked at that in a normal setting you would say he’s going to get blown out. But there’s an- other fundamental in this election and it’s called Donald Trump, who is many things but he’s not what any would call the most disciplined candidate.” Rasmussen said the popular vote polls right now show the race is a toss-up, but that the data doesn’t give one a real sense of the race. For example, in 2016 Donald Trump lost the popular vote by two points and yet he won the presidency. In 2020, he lost the popular vote by four-and-a half points and was nearly reelected. Rasmussen predict- ed that if the popular vote isn’t tied this year, Donald Trump will be reelected. “I would watch those swing state polls to see which way they’re moving and if I had to make a default guess right now, I would say whichever party wins the White House will win the House of Representatives.” “It’s The Economy, Stupid!” “James Carville was right when he said ‘it’s the econo- my, stupid!’ echoed Rasmussen, who reinforced the state- ment by saying that it is the single most important factor in just about every election, except after 9/11 and a few oth- er rare exceptions. He cited the statistic that 50 percent of Americans live paycheck to paycheck so if the price of
