gas goes up, they have less money to spend on grocer- ies. “That’s the mindset that will change this election right now,” he said. “The numbers are horrible for Biden, but if the finances of nearly half of Americans improve, then Biden’s numbers will improve, too.” The bottom line is that the economy is the single thing that can turn the election one way or another, but there are other issues that may have an impact, as well. The second most important issue that might have an impact on the election, according to Rasmussen’s poll- ing, are the college protests that are going on around the country. “Right after the attack on Israel, we found out that 62 percent of voters thought we should be helping Isra- el and hardly anybody thought we should be helping the other side. About 30 percent felt “let’s just stay out of it.” In the last couple of weeks since the college protests began, the number of people supporting Israel has in- creased five percentage points. “We’re beginning to see a serious shift here, especially if those protests continue throughout the year and become more violent and more commonplace,” Rasmussen said. “That’s going to be a real hurdle for the administration. On the other hand, if the protests end when college graduations do or sometime over the summer, it shouldn’t be an issue that affects the election.” Immigration? Rasmussen doesn’t think that it will have much of an impact unless Biden does something dramatic to change the policy. Citing polling on immigration, he said only about one out of four voters think Biden’s even seri- ous about trying to secure the border. The abortion issue? Rasmussen said it’s likely to have an impact on a few races but not as much as it did a cou- ple years ago. However, a lot of that depends on how the Republicans decide to respond. The Longer Term Rasmussen posed a question to the FBA’s audience of paper manufacturers and suppliers: If people think we have a lot of common ground and if people are adhering to those founding ideals, why is there so much toxicity in the political process and why is it so offensive? “I’ll start by telling you who’s to blame: it’s a group that we’ve defined as the ‘elite one percent.’ These are peo- ple who have a postgraduate degree. The gap between people with a postgraduate degree and a bachelor’s de- gree is bigger than the gap between people with a bach- elor’s degree and no college degree. It is the post grads who are setting things apart. They have incredible levels of influence – most of them have gone to one of 12 elite schools and those 12 elite schools make up half of the For- tune 500’s board members and half of most of the major policy positions in government – and they see things dif- ferently than the rest of us do.” For example, most voters say there’s not enough in- dividual freedom in America.
