I think through all of this, we’re realizing that there are usually silver linings to be found in almost any situation — we just have to look for them a little more earnestly sometimes. We’ve also found inspiration in the ways local businesses have helped one another out and showed up for the community. Seeing our local doughnut shops rally community support to make donations to our health care workers was so great! Many other local businesses are getting in on the cause as well, and it’s been great to see how our community has, in turn, supported those in the restaurant industry by ordering food from them. It’s inspiring to see the ways people have gotten creative and made the best out of a crummy situation. When you’re thinking about where to shop or get dinner, return the kindness these businesses are showing and shop local. It’s one of the best things you can do because it makes our whole community stronger. In addition, as you’re thinking about ways to give back right now, think locally first. We have many organizations that would be so grateful for your support, including our local Meals on Wheels chapter, Court Appointed

Special Advocates (CASA), the Jewish Federation of St. Louis, and Sts. Joachim & Ann Care Service. Your donations to these organizations are tax-deductible, and the positivity you will put into the world is priceless. Please remember that with the tax filing deadline extended to July 15, we are about one month out from that date. Give us a call if you have any questions or concerns — we’re here to help. Whether you have a tax-related question or just want to call to say hello, we love hearing from you. Please don’t hesitate to reach out. Stay happy and healthy this month, and until next time, -John and Jeff Zufall usually silver linings to be found in almost any situation — we just have to look for them a little more earnestly sometimes.” “I think through all of this, we’re realizing that there are

Hello there! How are you? We know the last couple months haven’t been easy for anyone, but amid the circumstances that challenge us, there have been reasons to feel hopeful and inspired. Something that’s kept our spirits lifted is connecting with all of you. Staying in touch through Zoom calls, emails, and messages has been the highlight of our days. Since we couldn’t connect with you in person the way we normally do after your tax returns are filed, we got to talk over Zoom calls. In some ways, it felt like we got to have even more of a personal conversation during these video chats. It was good to hear how you’re doing and catch up (and get some recommendations for what to watch and listen to).

There’s an App for That CAN’T SLEEP?

‘The Agony of Decision’ Has Answers UNSURE OF HOWTO LEADYOUR BUSINESS THROUGH A CRISIS?

When business coach and scholar Helio Fred Garcia published “The Agony of Decision: Mental Readiness and Leadership in a Crisis” back in 2017, he had no way of knowing that a pandemic would break out just three years later. Now, his book about how to make tough calls under pressure is more relevant than ever for entrepreneurs.

On Sunday, June 20, the sun will stay up in Alaska until almost midnight, longer than any other day of the year. That’s because June 20 is the summer solstice, the day when one of the Earth’s poles is tilted so drastically toward the sun that light hits our whole hemisphere for a few extra hours. It’s a beautiful phenomenon, but it can also be disruptive — particularly if you’re trying to sleep. Life has already thrown a lot of stressors at us over the last six months, so if the extra daylight is the icing on the cake of your insomnia, it might be time to turn to your smartphone for some high-tech help. These two innovative apps can help you get your eight hours in spite of Mother Nature’s curveballs. PZIZZ:WANDER SCIENTIFICALLY CRAFTED ‘DREAMSCAPES’ Step aside, white noise machines: Pzizz is here to take background noise to the next level. Instead of simply playing ocean sounds or chirping birds to help you doze off, this app relies on a branch of psychology called “psychoacoustics” for its custom sound blends. Its researchers combine ambient sounds with narration to create “dreamscapes” tailored to different points in your sleep cycle. It’s a well-thought-out product with a clinical trial under its belt. Head to Pzizz.com to learn more or download the app through the Apple App Store or Google Play for a seven-day free trial. CALM: HAVE A CELEBRITY READ YOU A BEDTIME STORY If you’ve been feeling nostalgic for the bedtime stories of your childhood, then Calm is the app for you. This award- winning application was named the world’s happiest app by Timewell and has helped thousands of people de-stress since it came online in 2012.Though it’s perhaps best known for its meditations, the app also has a library of “Sleep Stories” or adults and kids alike, many read by famous voices like Matthew McConaughey, Stephen Fry, and Alan Sklar. Head to Calm.com to browse the library or download the app from the Apple App Store or Google Play. Good luck, and sweet dreams!

“The Agony of Decision” teaches that when your company is on the line, it’s quick thinking — more than smooth communication, effective execution, or even expertise — that can save it.The book offers a framework to guide you through the decision-making process, helping you identify and weigh each outcome, then choose the right one. Answer that first big question, Garcia teaches, and the rest of the tumblers will click into place, allowing you to lead your company forward. To prove it, he weaves his personal experiences and decision- making scaffolding with notable stories of past business failures and successes. As one Amazon reviewer writes, “Helio Fred Garcia provides a thorough discussion of the do’s and don'ts of crisis response with both current and historical events (remember Exxon Valdez or Tylenol?) that clearly demonstrate the right way to respond … and the gateway to disaster.” With more than 30 years of experience mentoring massive international companies and nurturing business leaders at top American universities under his belt, Garcia is the perfect person to give voice to these tough lessons. His prose is self-assured, knowledgeable, and easy to read, which makes “The Agony of Decision” a surprisingly comforting book for an entrepreneur going through hardship. There’s a reason BookAuthority named it one of their best crisis management books of all time! In the last few months, the coronavirus has proven to be the ultimate test of crisis management. If you’re in the process of figuring out how to lead your business effectively through the turbulence and could use a decision-making toolkit to help you when the phone rings with bad news, “The Agony of Decision” might be your ideal summer read.

3 STRATEGIES TO (FINALLY) GET YOUR RECEIPTS ORGANIZED

Searching through piles of paperwork to find the one bill or receipt you need is no fun. As we approach the extended deadline of July 15 for filing 2019 taxes, it’s the perfect time to organize some of this year’s and last year's documents so you aren’t left scrambling for an important receipt later on. Here are a few strategies you can use to get organized. 1. Use colored folders to categorize. A pack of colored folders can set you up for organizational success with different colors dedicated to different types of receipts. These categories might include home and office expenses like electricity, gas, water, home repairs, and renovations; vehicle expenses like gas, repairs, and maintenance; and charitable donations. 2. Keep digital copies. Especially for business expenses and other important documents that you’ll need to keep for a while, consider scanning the documents (or requesting PDF versions of receipts) so they’re less likely to get lost and easier to find. 3. Securely dispose of outdated documents. Once the recommended time has passed, you can clean out old files and securely dispose of outdated documents by shredding them. The IRS recommends that you keep supporting documents for at

least three years after your return has been filed, including bills, invoices, proofs of payment, and proofs of donation. The three- year guideline also applies to property that you’ve sold in the last three years, including home purchases, home improvement costs, stocks, investments, and individual retirement account transactions. Business owners will want to keep employment tax records for at least four years after the tax is due or is paid, whichever comes later. You’ll also want to hang on to records relating to gross receipts, expenses, assets, and proofs of purchase. If you have any tax-related questions as you’re organizing your documents, give your advisor at Capital Advisory Group a call. You can also talk to us about developing next year’s tax strategy — now is the time to do it!

St. Louis is home to some delicious doughnut purveyors, including Vincent Van Doughnut and Donut Palace. In 2015, after cultivating a fan base with their delicious, made-from-scratch creations sold out of a 1960 Grumman Olson (St. Louis’ first doughnut truck), Vincent Van Doughnut won the Cooking Channel’s "Donut Showdown" and opened up their first storefront. Donut Palace in Ellisville is a local family-run business that’s been serving Missouri for over 16 years. Both Vincent Van Doughnut and Donut Palace also began putting together quarantine kits so people could make their own doughnut creations at home. It proved to be a fun home economics activity and a delicious treat to boot. But no matter how you spell it, most can agree that these sweet circles of heaven taste delicious. Still up for debate, though, are whether yeast doughnuts are superior to cake doughnuts. Good thing you don’t have to choose! National Doughnut Day was started by the Salvation Army in 1938 to commemorate the efforts of Doughnut Lassies, women who volunteered abroad during World War I on behalf of the Salvation Army to provide food and
