3 STRATEGIES TO (FINALLY) GET YOUR RECEIPTS ORGANIZED

Searching through piles of paperwork to find the one bill or receipt you need is no fun. As we approach the extended deadline of July 15 for filing 2019 taxes, it’s the perfect time to organize some of this year’s and last year's documents so you aren’t left scrambling for an important receipt later on. Here are a few strategies you can use to get organized. 1. Use colored folders to categorize. A pack of colored folders can set you up for organizational success with different colors dedicated to different types of receipts. These categories might include home and office expenses like electricity, gas, water, home repairs, and renovations; vehicle expenses like gas, repairs, and maintenance; and charitable donations. 2. Keep digital copies. Especially for business expenses and other important documents that you’ll need to keep for a while, consider scanning the documents (or requesting PDF versions of receipts) so they’re less likely to get lost and easier to find. 3. Securely dispose of outdated documents. Once the recommended time has passed, you can clean out old files and securely dispose of outdated documents by shredding them. The IRS recommends that you keep supporting documents for at

least three years after your return has been filed, including bills, invoices, proofs of payment, and proofs of donation. The three- year guideline also applies to property that you’ve sold in the last three years, including home purchases, home improvement costs, stocks, investments, and individual retirement account transactions. Business owners will want to keep employment tax records for at least four years after the tax is due or is paid, whichever comes later. You’ll also want to hang on to records relating to gross receipts, expenses, assets, and proofs of purchase. If you have any tax-related questions as you’re organizing your documents, give your advisor at Capital Advisory Group a call.
