Joe Sacco, Page 12-13 from“The Fixer” (2009 [2003])
The Art of the News is the first major retrospective devoted to the increasingly influential genre of visual narrative, comics journalism. The exhibition spotlights the groundbreaking work of author-artist Joe Sacco, a foundational figure in the field—and a graduate of the UO. Accompanying Sacco’s work are key pieces from an international group of artists who have developed comics journalism and are pushing the genre in new directions, including Gerardo Alba, Dan Archer, Thi Bui, Tracy Chahwan, Jesús Cossio, Sarah Glidden, Omar Khouri, Viktoria Lomasko, Sarah Mirk, Ben Passmore, Yazan al-Saadi, and Andy Warner. https://jsma.uoregon.edu/ComicsJournalism The Art of the News Comics Journalism On view from September 24, 2021 to January 16, 2022
Curated by Katherine Kelp-Stebbins, Professor of Comic Studies, UO Department of English, in consultation with Ben Saunders, Professor of Comics Studies, UO Department of English.

Mary Henry remains one of the Northwest's foremost propo- nents of geometric abstraction. To follow is a passage from her artist statement: “I am not interested in portraying life as such, but I am interested in portraying ideas and emotions. What I would like most of all to be able to do would be to find in my painting the connection of humanity to the universe— a truly symbolic relationship made visible.” MICHAEL PARSONS _______________ FINE ART Located across the Park Blocks from the Portland Art Museum MARY HENRY 1913–2009, Washington
