GOLDEN TEXT : «Godliness is profit able unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come” (1 Tim. 4:8). DEVOTIONAL READING: Mk. 9:42-47. Outline and Exposition I. T h e P r e c e p t f o r L if e (Prov. 1 :7-10) T HE Book of Proverbs contains instruction for every man, in re lation to spirit, soul; and body. he key to the book is: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning [the chief part] of wisdom” (v. 7). The book as a whole is the amplification and appli cation of this one great truth. This foundation is the bedrock of all wis dom. Job asked: “Where shall wisdom be found? and where is the place of understanding?” And then, after ex ploring every realm known to man, without finding the object he sought, he declared r;“The fear of the Lord, that is wisdom” (at. Job 28:12-28). “Wisdom” in the book 6f*Proverbs is,

12, 18-23; G a l a t ia n s 6:7-9 first of all, for the young—to enlighten their understanding and to satisfy their understanding with truth; mid it is, moreover, for older ones—to increase their knowledge, to enable them to un derstand life, and thus to make them competent to instruct others in the ways of wisdom. With this process in view, the young are exhorted to he obedient to the instruction of parents. He who has true wisdom will resist the enticement of sinners. This truth is aptly illustrated by the story of Joseph in Potiphar’s house (cf. Gen. 39; Psa. 1:1). For Christians, those who are now members of the Body of Christ, the word is: “Have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather even reprove [marg., ‘convict’] them” (Eph. 5:11, R.V.). « rr. T h e P e r v e r s io n o f L if e (Isa. 5 :11, 12, 18-23) There is perversion of the Lord’s gifts when pleasure blinds the eyes (vs. 11, 12). "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with ’whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning” (Jas. 1:17). But when men in dulge in strong drink, in ’încontrolled feasting and unholy pleasure until there is no regard for the Lord nor consid eration of His ways—then it is that there is perversion of life. There is the perversion of the Lord’s light when pride blinds the eyes (vs. 18, 19) Becoming lifted up with pride, these people had the temerity to wish that God’s work of punishment would hasten. They regarded the coming judg ment as just anotbei spectacle for their entertainment, supposing that they themsélves were beyond its reach. There is the perversion of wisdom when sin of any kind blinds the eyes (vs. 20-23). In such blindness, evil is counted as good, and good evil; dark-
