Wandering through the rooms of the National Gallery in London, theMusee Dorsay in Paris, or the Frick Collection in New York, we are transported to another world by the Great Master painters of the past. In these hallowed halls we can find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time. The attendance figures at every great art exhibition in the world are a testimony to the continued appreciation of the power of real art. We are not only talking about pigment and canvas, but how it is transformed in the hands of Rembrandt, Rubens, Vermeer; and how that transformation speaks through time is special indeed. Great art tells its story long after the artist and their dealer are gone, and it is our dream as patrons of visual art art collectors to find an artist in our time who can take their place among these Great Masters.
Some of Hamish’s most evocative paintings are collaborations between artist and model, and it is the complete alignment of Hamish and his muse, Gail, that breathes love and intimacy into his figurative paintings. Van Gogh said ‘what is done in love is well done’ and this is what we are privileged to see at work here.
Hamish’s dogged pursuit of excellence in his craft is an inspiration to all of us who choose to strive to be as good as we can be.
