Stay off the ice for a while longer warn OPP gŏđŏ editionap.ca

Although the temperature now has gone sub-zero, it is still not safe enough for go- ing ice fishing or snowmobiling across lo- cal lakes and streams. Police are warning winter anglers to cool their heels for awhile longer before pul- ling out the ice fishing huts or doing any- thing else that involves getting out on the Ottawa, South Nation, Castor or any other river or even a small pond. The ice right now may still be too thin to provide adequate support. Good ice needs to be at least four inches thick, clear and white to support a human. For a snowmobile or any other vehicle or a standard ice hut, the ice needs to be even

thicker to be safe. Anyone wanting to head out on the ice should first check local weather conditions and also check with local authorities about whether the ice is safe yet. When out on the ice, always go with a partner and do not go out in the dark. Avoid unfamiliar areas. Let someone know where you have gone and when you expect to re- turn. Any child on the ice should have adult supervision. Carry a small survival kit when out on the ice. The kit should include ice picks, rope, a lighter, waterproof matches, magnesium fire start, a pocket knife, compass, and whistle.

Project Paradigm is a joint operation between various OPP departments targeting the drug trade. Russell County OPP partnered with officers from the Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau, Drug Enforcement Unit, and the Emergency Response Team on a vehicle stop Dec. 16 near Limoges Road in Russell Township. An Ottawa couple was arrested following search-and-seizure of the vehicle. Police found almost 3000 tablets of methamphetamine, also known as“speed”. All of the rectangular tablets were marked with a UFC logo. Projected street value of the drugs is about $15,000. Police also seized $790 in Canadian currency. Michale Wright, 28, and Tanya Lee Rowen, 32, of Ottawa, are both charged with narcotics possession for the purpose of trafficking. Rowen is also charged with possession of marijuana. Domestic assault A 41-year-old man from Val D’Or, QC was arrested and charged following police inves- tigation of a Dec. 23 domestic dispute incident on Champlain Street in Bourget. Police report states that an argument turned into a physical assault. The report also noted that police were told of other past similar incidents. The charges resulted from an evening incident Dec. 29 at a home on County Road 17 in the township. The police report stated the accused broke into the residence, assault two people inside, and then left the premises. When police arrived at the scene, she was sitting in her 2009 Suzuki SXT, which was parked in a driveway. Further investigation indicated she had phoned and texted one of the victims of the assault on several prior occasions. She was arrested and is now scheduled for the Jan. 14 provincial court session in L’Ori- gnal. Drunk driver Norman D. Beauchamp, 52, of Gatineau, QC, is charged with driving while disqualified and with driving with a blood-alcohol level exceeding 80 milligrams. The charges resulted after police stopped a vehicle on Laurier Street in Rockland on December 24. The vehicle was stopped because it had no tail lights. Beauchamp failed a roadside screening test and a later breathalyzer test. Computer records check showed his licence was suspended.
