August is bittersweet for me. On the one hand, we have to say goodbye to the warm summer months. On the other, we get to experience a period of milder weather and the beauties that come with autumn. You’d think my kids would be down about it, but they’re actually excited to see their friends every day at school. Gino is particularly excited because school helps him do more of what he loves. He’s really into media arts and goes to a special school for it. Jana, our sixth grader, is the athlete, and August is actually her only month off. Having children with such varied interests keeps things pretty interesting, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. GINO AND JANA

but that’s the best part — this school is giving him plenty of ways to figure that out.

Gino does athletics, too. He spent a lot of this summer in mixed martial arts classes. But between the two of them, Jana’s much more into athletics. Her favorite sport is fast-pitch softball. Jana has been competing with a year-round traveling team for a few years now, where she plays pitcher and first base. We don’t have to wonder whether or not she still enjoys it because it’s all she ever talks about. She can’t wait to get to seventh grade so she can play for the middle school team. Beyond that, Jana also plays basketball in the winter. It’s a lot to have on one plate, but she’s surprisingly disciplined about balancing homework with sports. Having both sides of the spectrum gets kind of complicated. Gino doesn’t like going to tournaments most of the time. He’d rather be working on his YouTube channel or hanging out with his friends. But we make it work, and we spend plenty of time together as a family. In the end, that’s the most important thing to us. It’s exciting to see your children come into their own and find out what they enjoy doing. No matter what they choose, I’m just glad my wife and I get to support them. It doesn’t matter whether we’re watching one of Gino’s videos or going to one of Jana’s softball games, as long as we’re together as a family.

A few years ago, Gino used to dread going to school. I think that’s the case with many artistic kids. Since he was young, he’s been passionate about art. I think he surpassed my drawing skills when he was only 5. He’s just always had a knack for it. Later, he

got into videos and created his own YouTube channel where he did gaming reviews. He was always working on a project. We knew he wasn’t enjoying school, so when we found out about Lincoln Park, a media arts-focused high school, we knew we had to get him in. Luckily, he had so many completed projects that he had a nice portfolio to submit with his application, and he was immediately accepted. Now, Gino genuinely looks forward to going to school in the morning. He has to take a 50-minute bus ride to get there and back every day, but he never complains. As for the future, he hasn’t figured out yet whether he wants to focus more on photography or videography,

We truly appreciate your referrals. They are the greatest compliment we can get.

CURE FORTHE COMMON COLD? ECHINACEA MIGHT BE THE HERB YOU’RE LOOKING FOR

Echinacea was a very trendy herb in the late 1980s, but it fell out of popularity as the public went on to the next big thing. However, there are many reasons why this fantastic herb should have a place in everyone’s medicine cabinet. The active substances in echinacea can boost immune function, helping relieve pain and reduce inflammation. While an outright cure for the common cold remains elusive, research from the University of Maryland Medical Center shows that echinacea might be the herb you need to get back on your feet faster. Clinical trials show that participants who took a dose of echinacea via a pill or a tincture right when they began to feel sick reduced the length of their cold by one to four days. Fifty-eight percent of participants avoided experiencing a cold altogether. Echinacea tea is also extremely beneficial in treating a cold. Another study followed people with early cold or flu symptoms, such as runny nose, sore throat, or fever. The study found that participants who drank

several cups of echinacea tea throughout the day for five days experienced shorter periods of sickness than those who drank tea without echinacea. Due to the way echinacea interacts with the immune system, individuals on medication that suppresses the immune system should not take any form of echinacea. People with diabetes, tuberculosis, multiple sclerosis,

and any autoimmune diseases are also advised against taking echinacea.

The effectiveness of echinacea is helping the herb quickly become one of the most popular holistic supplements in North America. Just be sure you speak with a doctor before giving anyone in your family a new supplement.

Garnish with toasted cubed bread, avocados, spring onions, chives, lemon zest, or a drizzle of olive oil, if desired.

Rock climbing may be daunting, but you don’t have to have supernaturally chiseled back and arm muscles to do it. And you should do it: Research shows that, far beyond being a prime tool for building muscle strength and cardiovascular endurance, climbing can improve your memory, reduce stress, and help your brain become more effective at solving problems. It would be unwise, however, to just pick a mountain and start clambering up. The first thing you’ll need is guidance. Somebody has to show you the ropes — literally. Whether that means a friend well-versed in the ways of ascension or a professional guide is up to you. The easiest way to get help is just to head over to your local indoor climbing gym, walk up to the front desk, and tell them you’re a newbie. They’ll be hapy to set you up with some rental equipment and an experienced instructor. Indoor wall climbs are completely safe and relatively easy. They’ll have routes available for every skill level, allowing you to escalate difficulty at your own pace. Let your trainer or friend give you the lowdown on climbing lingo. First, you’ve got your harness, a belt that loops around your legs and waist that has attachments to connect to a rope. Metal carabiners will link the rope to your harness. Then, you’ve got your ever-vital belay, a metal doohickey used in belaying — go figure — or rappelling. Belaying is the process of one climber securing the rope for another as they ascend. Rappelling is simply a fancy word for sliding carefully down the rope back to earth. Spend some time on the sidelines, observing the veteran climbers. If you have questions, don’t hesitate to ask anyone who might be around. The climbing community is well-known for welcoming new participants. They’ve all been where you are.

hurt, and I just never felt good. Now, I can complete my daily tasks with little to no pain and I get far fewer headaches. I’ll always be grateful for everyone’s help — especially Dan and Sean. Without them, I know I’d be far worse off than I am today! I’ll definitely recommend Hess Physical Therapy to friends and family in the future! Thank you for everything!” —Brooke Smith

VIEW OF A LIFETIME WHERE TO WATCH THE GREAT AMERICAN ECLIPSE

OTHER LOCATION: CRAFTON-INGRAM SHOPPING CENTER 37 FOSTER AVE., PITTSBURGH, PA 15205

On August 21, 2017, the greatest show of the summer will take place in the United States: a total solar eclipse! This eclipse will be visible across North America, but the path of totality — the area where the moon completely covers the sun — will only fall in the continental U.S., leading this cosmic event to be called the Great American Eclipse. If you’re already in the United States, a day’s road trip is all you need to grab a front row seat for this rare astronomical occurrence. Need a place to watch the eclipse in the southern U.S.? Then get yourself to South Carolina, where the state capital of Columbia is almost right in the middle of the path of totality. Plenty of hotels make Columbia a great viewing location for those Columbia, South Carolina

who don’t want to camp out, and the vibrant city life means you’ll have a lot to do even when the eclipse is over.

Sandhills, North Platte, Nebraska

In the heartlands, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a more perfect viewing location than the Sandhills of western Nebraska. With wide- open skies, low rolling hills, and no towering buildings to get in the way, the Sandhills are sure to be a popular viewing spot.

The Museum of Idaho, Idaho Falls, Idaho

The Museum of Idaho has been designated an Official NASA Observation Site, and the museum is hosting four days of awesome events to celebrate. Enjoy live presentations, technology demonstrations,
