Learning Is Reciprocal Many in the EL program are or were in the process of becoming presidents of their own companies or taking over the reins of a family business like Frisch. As they move up within their business, the program gives them a level of support and experiences that leads to them get- ting into those higher fields, said Taryn Pyle, Director of Education & Leadership at AICC. Those in the EL group engage with the more seasoned members of the industry, which opens the doors to the va- riety of jobs and positions in the industry. They learn more about the various roles in customer service, sales, and oth- er areas of responsibility. AICC’s Virginia Humphrey helped create the EL pro- gram and was followed by Scott Ellis, who facilitated the program before Pyle assumed the position last year. Mark Mathes, former owner of Vanguard Packaging and for- mer chairman of AICC was someone who pushed for the program that was envisioned to foster and embrace new ideas. TAPPI's Young Professional program was launched in 2014 and continues to grow each year. “Mark knew we needed young people in the business, as well as the association to continue to bring these really good new ideas and ways of looking at life,” Pyle said. “It wasn’t for a bunch of kids; it was for young people within our industry who had something to say. They could learn from us, but we could also learn from them, and I think that’s carried through year after year and, in my opinion, it just keeps getting stronger since they launched.” Visit aiccbox.org to learn more ELs.
