When so many retailers offer free returns, people can easily be lulled into thinking there's no cost attached. Busi- ness leaders are quickly realizing that isn't the case, with reports showing that the "reverse logistics" of returns cost UK retailers £60 (USD $72 billion) a year. The best solution is the most straightforward one. Make sure that the E-com- merce packaging you select to deliver your products safe- ly and soundly to the customer in can easily be used to return the product in case of dissatisfaction. While the current business environment is challenging, there are also opportunities. Organizations that set a high ambition level for the product experience while attempting to understand today's consumers' complex and intersect- ing motivations, will grow and sustain at greater levels. Opportunity Knocks The subscription E-commerce market is multiplying. For consumers, subscription products or boxes offer a conve- nient, personalized, and often lower-cost way to buy what they want and need. Companies in the space must devel- op great experiences (as opposed to excellent subscrip- tions) to avoid high churn rates and accelerate growth. The membership economy, also known as the sub- scription economy, refers to a shift in mentality within con- sumers and organizations from ownership to access. Con- sumers are putting more value on engaging experiences and hassle-free experiences. From the business side, subscription companies want to build long-term customer relationships. This lets them create a more predictable cash flow, a direct customer feedback loop, and greater customer loyalty. The subscrip- tion box market is enjoying rapid growth propelled, in part, by the pandemic, which shuttered shops and drove shop- pers to the internet. The subscription market was valued at £395m (USD $395 million) in 2021 versus £332m (USD $399 million) in 2020, an 18.9 percent year/year increase and set to be worth £1.8b (USD 2.17 billion) by 2025. From food to beauty products, clothes to pet supplies, there is no stone left unturned regarding the repertoire of products on offer. We are now evolving beyond the three key drivers of convenience, personalization, and regulari- ty. New and established brands are working hard to keep this business model fresh. Addressing issues like waste reduction, carbon footprint and local sourcing of raw mate- rials can increase sales and improve reputation. Business- es need to think about how their packaging can support their customers to help the environment. For now, though, another question surpasses all other considerations. How do we join the dots between seem- ingly disparate customer demands, sustainability, and val- ue? With living costs skyrocketing and consumers feeling the pinch, brands and converters must be bold and look beyond pricing to unlock such creative opportunities.
