Students were required to have a career plan in pack- aging and processing machinery manufacturing, as well as a record of past awards and industry involvement through internships and career development activities. Each year, the PMMI Foundation provides over $200,000 in academic scholarships to students studying packaging, food processing, engineering, and mechatron- ics at over 50 PMMI Education Partner programs. “The PMMI Foundation scholarship programs are an investment in the future of our industry, and we are very proud to support this next generation of leaders as they pursue their higher education goals,” said Kate Fiorianti, Director, Workforce Development, PMMI. Packaging Demand Draws Concerns About A Slowing World Economy Downturns in containerboard production worldwide is raising concerns about a slowing global economy and fears of an impending recession. According to Bloomberg.com , North American compa- nies shut down one million tons of capacity in the third quarter and the outlook is the same for the fourth quarter, Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Ryan Fox said. The global packaging paper demand experienced its biggest drop this year since the post-pandemic peak when economies were rebounding, according to statistics from the Pulp and Paper Products Council (PPPC). With corrugated box demand being one of the key indi- cators that investors use to gauge how well the economy is doing, the signals right now are not encouraging. U.S. prices fell in November for the first time in two years and the US, the world’s biggest exporter, reported 21 percent lower volumes sent overseas in October versus the previ- ous year, Bloomberg reported. Recent history shows that a significant economic stim- ulus, which is not anticipated, would be necessary to pro- vide any meaningful box demand, according to KeyBanc analyst Adam Josephson.
