Nassau Community College Student Services Center Nassau Community College
LiRo-Hill provided full architectural and engineering services for a 30,000 SF renovation to Nassau County Community College’s Student Services Center. The design repurposed an existing space below a public plaza to provide a consolidated and expanded “One-stop” Student Services Center. The mechanical design featured two new semicustom air handling units, new VAV reheat and perimeter heating systems, and new chilled water and hot water pumps. Key design challenges included sharing HVAC systems with adjacent existing spaces, interfacing with the central campus hydronic systems, and coordinating exposed ductwork with other services in a tight ceiling. In addition to performing the engineering design work, LiRo-Hill performed construction administration services. The project was opened to the public in the summer of 2016.

LiRo-Hill provided full architectural/engineering services and construction management for the park-wide restoration efforts of the 550 acre Hudson River Park following Superstorm Sandy flooding damages. Hudson River Park Trust’s renovation projects spanned from Pier 96 to Pier 25, including Pier 40 – the largest pier in the park occupying over 14 acres. The main project included removal, replacement, and relocation of damaged electrical switchgear, mechanical HVAC equipment, fire sprinkler/fire alarm equipment, and plumbing equipment to mitigate and minimize potential for future flood damages. The scope of work also included lighting and feeder replacement. LiRo-Hill designed, procured, and managed 15 construction projects in parallel to quickly bring this park back to life.
St Francis Infusion Center Saint Francis Hospital
LiRo-Hill provided the engineering services required to convert an existing office building into a medical facility that included an infusion suite, a PAT suite, and an imaging suite. Each suite was designed to operate independently from the others to allow for flexibility of schedule and operations. The infusion suite consisted of positive pressure isolation rooms, negative pressure isolation rooms, support offices, consultation spaces, a conference room, and three nurse stations. The infusion suite also included a USP‐797/800 compliant pharmacy with an ISO‐7 environment for mixing the sterile compounds of the suite. LiRo-Hill worked with the client and end users for each suite to ensure the environmental and power needs of the individual spaces were met. Patient comfort and experience was a major component of the success of the space.
Winthrop Hospital Ambulatory Surgery Center Expansion Winthrop-University Hospital
LiRo-Hill designed a complete renovation and expansion of the Winthrop University Hospital Ambulatory Surgery Center. The existing Ambulatory Surgery Center occupied nearly one third of a 22,000 square foot building. The project increased square footage of the hospital space and added a pre-admissions testing area with a shared intake section. From a mechanical equipment perspective, the work included installation of rooftop units, exhaust fans, VAV terminals, boilers, chillers, and associated ducts, piping, and pumps. LiRo-Hill worked closely with McGuire Group Architects to phase the project in a manner that kept the building operational during construction. With a thorough understanding of the relevant codes and regulations, LiRo-Hill designed a well-functioning, quiet, energy-efficient space on time and within budget.
Winthrop Hospital Pharmacy Renovation Winthrop-University Hospital
LiRo-Hill provided engineering services for the complete renovation of the Winthrop University Hospital pharmacy located within the main campus of the hospital. The complexity of this project stemmed from the need to renovate the space while maintaining full operations in the other sections of the hospital. LiRo-Hill met this challenge head on by utilizing Building Information Modeling (BIM) to coordinate proposed renovations with existing conditions and establish efficient phasing for construction. LiRo-Hill’s analysis of the BIM facility model reduced change orders and increased the efficiency of the construction process. Through the use of swing spaces and the expansion of the pharmacy into an adjacent office space, the project team successfully met the needs of the facility with minimal impact on daily operations of the hospital. LiRo-Hill designed a reliable and powerful HVAC system to meet the critical environment requirements of the facility and brought the hospital’s electrical system up to code via the installation of a generator with automatic transfer switches.
Winthrop Hospital Outpatient Cyberknife Installation Winthrop-University Hospital
LiRo-Hill provided MEP engineering design and construction administration services for this groundbreaking facility constructed within the lower level of an existing Manhattan commercial building. As the equipment generates high levels of energy radiation, walls surrounding the treatment room were constructed with high density concrete blocks infused with lead to shield adjacent spaces from emissions. A heavily structurally reinforced floor pad was installed to accommodate the weight of the equipment. LiRo-Hill designed HVAC systems to maintain the continuous stringent temperature and humidity controls needed for proper equipment operation, as well as a new electrical service to support the high energy needs of the project. Substantial planning and design were necessary to allow for the installation of the Cyberknife and CT Simulator equipment in the lower level of the space. The building elevator shafts were not large enough to allow for the equipment to pass down, so LiRo-Hill coordinated an opening in the suite floor to rig the materials and equipment up into the space during construction.
Winthrop Hospital Trauma Expansion Winthrop-University Hospital
The Winthrop Trauma Expansion project was part of an expansion of the Winthrop University Hospital’s main campus. It included the addition of three trauma bays, two holding bays, a decontamination shower, an ambulance triage area, and support service spaces. This project was designated as a fast track design, requiring LiRo-Hill to produce design documents for filing within 4 weeks and a complete set of documents within 8 weeks. LiRo-Hill delivered this project on time and under budget, ultimately allowing Winthrop to receive their Level 1 designation on time. In order to adhere to the tight time constraints, LiRo-Hill designed MEP systems that utilized simultaneous off-site construction and rapid on-site demolition to the greatest extent possible. The design included two new custom VAV central air-handling units, two chillers, receptacle power, and lighting. The medical gas, plumbing, fire sprinkler, and fire alarm designs included facility integration and connections in the prefabricated building to allow for rapid connection to the existing systems of the facility.
Peconic Bay Medical Center Imaging Suite Peconic Bay Medical Center
The Peconic Bay Medical Center imaging suite serves as a multiuse space, accommodating ultrasounds, CT-scans, mammograms, bone density scans, and MRIs. LiRo-Hill was responsible for creating a design that would not interfere with simultaneous tenant construction in the base building. This created an additional layer of coordination. LiRo-Hill worked diligently with the project architects and the base building contractors to coordinate equipment locations and site access during the tenant design process. The additional effort on the design team’s part ensured the success of the tenant’s program. To meet the needs of the new imaging suite, LiRo-Hill utilized VAV terminal boxes served by packaged rooftop equipment, in addition to supplemental cooling equipment to give individual spaces individualized control. LiRo-Hill specified two new 208V-480V step up transformers to create high voltage power for the imaging equipment, lighting, and mechanical equipment. LiRo-Hill also designed a new natural gas service to serve rooftop gas fired equipment.
Winthrop Hospital Research and Academic Center Energy Model Winthrop-University Hospital
Winthrop University Hospital’s Research Building required energy modeling services to apply for a NYSERDA grant under a strict timeframe. LiRo-Hill was contracted to provide the services for this project directly to the hospital. We analyzed over 100,000 square feet, four stories, ten HVAC systems, plumbing, electrical, with 300 individual spaces in a four-week timeframe. The model was successfully delivered on time. The building did not qualify for the NYSERDA grant because of the programming of the building, however it was subsequently used for PSE&G rebates after the construction was complete. LiRo-Hill facilitated the coordination between PSE&G and Winthrop during the rebate process.
