Missions In Tanganyika

T here is a great need for additional help in Tanganyika, a British trusteeship under the U.N. in East Africa. The two best channels for evange lism in Basukumaland are through the hospitals and schools. Such in stitutions ought not to be referred to as secondary means for spreading the gospel. Thousands of Africans who otherwise would not allow them selves to be exposed to the Word of God are willing listeners when given medical aid, or an opportunity to read and write. Through personal work, or ordi nary evangelistic meetings, hearts may be stirred and souls won. And when ministering to these hungry pople day after day in the class room, they not only respond to the message for their own need, but they become well enough informed to teach others. Often the Spirit-filled African can do a much better job reaching his own people than the American missionary. The ratio of Roman Catholic teach ers and Protestants in this section of Tanganyika is about four to one. This becomes a serious matter when one realizes that certain divisions of ter ritory and educational facilities are made by the government in propor- I tion to the number of teachers a mis sion can supply. One of the great problems in mis sionary work is the lack of trained and consecrated Christian teachers. With the tremendous increase of pop ulation in Southern California it is not difficult to see how Christian teachers might be attracted to the local schools for employment. But even though the opportunity for Christian teachers is great in the homeland, the situation in Africa of fers even greater possibilities. Although Mau Mau atrocities have not been in evidence in Tanganyika the strong nationalistic spirit, fanned into flame by communistic agitators, is creating a serious problem for the' white missionaries. In some areas there is an undercurrent of resent ment coming up even among some of the Christians and the communistic spirit is often so strong that there is a threat to the Christian nationals. In this section of Africa the Church has grown exceedingly under perse cution. END.

edged sword to the converting of souls. From a Guatemala jail a young prisoner writes, “ It seems to me that God brought me here to get acquaint ed with Him. Now I have found the best possession that I could have wished for. I have Christ as my own personal Saviour.” After completing both the Gospel of John and the Acts courses a young Sikh in India wrote, “ This short study really moved my heart. Though I was bom in a Sikh family, yet for me Christ is all. I am really waiting for the day when I will be baptized.” And this testimony from a 24-year- old Hindu, “ I believe that Jesus Christ is my Saviour and that He will not cast me out. It is all due to the extreme kindness of the cor respondence school that I have fully understood the teachings of the Sav iour and have repented also. I shall continue in this direction with great spiritual ambition.” These are but a few of the many testimonies taken from the mail bag of the Light of Life offices in the various countries of the world. It is to the task of sup plying gospels and correspondence courses to evangelical missionaries that World Gospel Crusades is dedi cated. During the past six years 10 million gospels provided by World Gospel Crusades have been distrib uted all over the world. This has been to the salvation of souls and the glory of God. $10,000 Per Family To equip, send, support and house a missionary family of four on any one of the major fields of the world for one term costs a conservative $10,000. This same amount of money spent in the field of literature will introduce 5 million people to Jesus Christ through the channel of news paper evangelism. Each reader could be presented with the gospel in his own vernacular through five consecu tive insertions. Five thousand of these could then be taken through a guid ed study of the Gospel of John and the Book of Acts. This ought to be done— the other ought not to be left undone. “The Word of God increased . . . the number of disciples multiplied” (Acts 6:7).
