warned God’s people of the punishment which would come upon them if they did not repent of their sins and once again obey their God. Fearlessly, Jere miah obeyed the commandment of the Lord. One of Jeremiah’s friends wrote all of God’s words in a hook for him. Jere miah asked his friend, Baruch, to read the severe words of the hook to those who met in God’s house upon one of the spe cial days of worship. Later, when the words of the hook were read before the wicked king, he cut the pages of the book with a penknife and burned the book in a fire on the hearth before him. Although the lives of Jeremiah and Baruch were now in danger from the angry king, Jeremiah courageously repeat ed the words again as Baruch re-wrote the book. To the message that God had given the first time, God added a list of punishments which were coming upon the wicked king because he had burned God’s Word. July 10, 1955 The prophet was faced with a distress ing question. Why did not God do some thing about the sad situation in Judah? The times were all out of joint and yet God seemed to be silent. Habakkuk's Perplexity 1: 1-4 The word burden in verse one suggests a heavy matter. It was something that weighed heavily upon the prophet’s heart. The word is quite frequently used in the Old Testament of prophetic utterances with a grievous content. Jehovah's Response 1: 5, 6 Jehovah here answers that though for a time He has been patient, yet now He is about to do something very definite. He addresses the Jews as about to be pun ished. They even now deserved to be classed among the heathen. And indeed, they are soon to be punished by the heath en. The Chaldeans are about to march through the land and possess their dwell ings. The verses which immediately fol low give a vivid description of those who will afflict the land. Habakkuk's Testimony 1:12, 13 Even as the Chaldeans had impiously attributed their power for victory to their pagan deity, so now Habakkuk speaks of God as the only true God. He is everlast ing. He is the holy One. He is the migh ty One. And He is the One by whose per missive will the Chaldeans are being used Trusting God in Dark Days Hob. 1:1-6, 12, 13; 2:1-4 Pointers on the Lesson

July 3, 1955 Signs of National Decay Jer. 22:1-9, 24, 25 Pointers on the Lesson This new quarter’s lessons will take us from Jeremiah to Malachi. They will trace the downfall of the Southern King dom. It is the sad account of Judah’s de cline toward captivity because of refusal to repent. But in judgment God remem bers mercy and so we see a partial restora tion of the chosen people. Solemn Warnings vv. 1-9 Jeremiah, the prophet, was told to speak to the king of Judah with respect to his dealings and those associated with him. He was to go “ down” to the house of the king — down in relation to the temple where he had been prophesying. The Virig’s palace was on Mount Zion, where as, the temple was on Mount Moriah. The king was to understand that if there was rectitude in his dealings with his people, there would be a continuance of Judah’s kingdom (v. 4), otherwise desola tion was sure to come (v. 5) (cp. 17:25). Verse 6 suggests the position of honor to which “ the king’s house of Judah” had been called. Gilead and Lebanon were known for their beauty and fertility. Judah and its king were potentially beau tiful and able to be of great blessing to the world. But if there is no heeding of the Word of God, humiliation follows. A Definite Prediction vv. 24, 25 This passage and the verses immediate ly following set forth the prophecy of Judah’s captivity. “As I live” is a phrase emphasizing the surety of its realization. Even though Coniah or Jeconiah proved to he popular and of special value in God’s sight, yet Judah would still go into cap tivity, because of his father’s sins as well as his own (2 Chr. 36:9). The facts concerning Coniah are that he reigned three months and then surrendered to Nebuchadnezzar, when, after being a cap tive in Babylon for 37 years, he died. It is common knowledge that Judah also was taken into a bondage of 70 years. Helps for the Children A Prophet Who Could Not Be Silenced Jer. 36 i MEMORY VERSE: "The gross withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever" (Isa. 40:8). God’s people and their king were for getting the laws which God had given them to obey; in fact, they were forget ting God Himself. The prophet Jeremiah heard God’s voice asking him to write God’s message to the king. The message
