King's Business - 1955-06

SUNDAY SCHOOL continued and destruction of Jerusalem. Through disregard for the Word of God and be cause of foolish pride and rebellion this fate came upon the city. Solemn are the warnings that the story leaves. The in nocent as well as the guilty suffered in the judgment. The Seige of Jerusalem 20b-7 King Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon even as he had sinned against the Lord (24:19,20). The result was the fearful events connected with the captiv ity. Note the factors incident to it: (1) the encampment against the city, w . 1,2; the famine, v. 3; the breaking up of the city, v. 4; the fleeing of the king, v. 4 and the judgment of the king, w . 5-7. The Doom of the City vv. 8-12 These verses are filled with heartbreak. A people who might have been an influ ence for God among all nations find them selves the least among the nations. The city “ Beautiful for situation, the joy of the whole earth” (Ps. 48:2) in its ideal and prophetic sense, finds itself burned and desecrated. Here we have (1) the burn ing of the house of the Lord, w . 8,9, and (2) the taking of the people into captivity, w . 10-12. The verses following tell us more of the awful tragedy. In the pas sage studied today “the times of the Gen tiles” begin. Jerusalem is “ trodden down of the Gentiles.” And Paul, in speaking of this time shows that “ . . . blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in” (Rom. 11:25). “ So Judah was carried away out of their land” (v. 21). Helps for the Children Helping a Prophet in Trouble Jer. 38 MEMORY VERSE: "A friend loveth at all times . . ." (Prov. 17:17). Jeremiah, the prophet who wrote God’s word two times for the Jewish people, was in a dungeon. Because he had faith fully preached God’s message, the king’s servants had let him down into a dark hole filled with mud. War and famine filled the city. A friend of Jeremiah asked the king if he might rescue the prophet before he died in the dungeon. Tenderly the friend and other men let down some old rags for Jeremiah to put under his arms so that the ropes would not cut his flesh as he was lifted out of the hole. Jeremiah’s friend might have lost his life by pleading for a prisoner with whom the king was angry. Be friendly to those who are not popu lar and to those who are not attractive and to those who have little money. By showing the love of the Lord Jesus to those whom others “ snub” , you may lead them to the most wonderful of all Friends, the Lord Jesus Christ. July 31, 1955 Broken Vows Jer. 42:1b, 5-7, 10, 19; 43:2, 4, 7; 44:15-18, 23 Pointers on the Lesson The lesson today has to do with the people of Judah who were left in the land
