In Everything Give Thanks O N th e first Thanksgiving Day in this country o f ours, the Pilgrim Fathers gathered together to thank God for the blessings they had received. Do you think that was the first time in the world that people gathered together to say “thank you” to God? Can you think o f examples in the Bible where people thanked God? For what did Noah, Joseph, Moses, and David thank God? Who created (made out o f nothing) this wonderful world o f ours? Who created the people and the animals ? God did. The sunshine, the birds, the flowers, the trees, the clothes we wear, the food we eat, in fact everything in this marvelous world, God created for us and for our use. They really belong to Him, and we should never forget to thank Him. Read carefully from your Bible these references given in the Sword Drill and fill the spaces. See if you can find things in these verses to add to your list of things for which you are thankful. On November 10, 1483, there was born in Germany a baby boy whose name was Martin Luther, and though over five hundred years have passed since that day, the name and deeds o f Martin Luther are still remembered. His parents were not rich, but rather were quite poor, but that did not keep them from desiring for their boy the very best o f educational and religious training.

The One Who Remembered Let us read the story o f the one who re membered to give thanks to the Lord Jesus. Open your Bibles to Luke, chapter 17, and read verses 11 to 19. As you read, can’t you just see the Lord Jesus and the ten lepers? Where was Jesus going? Why did the lepers stand “afar off” ? What did they say to Jesus? How did He answer them? As they obeyed, what happened? How many had reason to give thanks? How many went away forgetting to return to give thanks? What did Jesus say to the one who remembered? How may we have faith? Read Romans 10:17. Are we like the nine lepers o f like the one? Memory Work For our memory work, we are learning a verse for each letter in the words, “ Know Your Bible Club.” W e are now ready for the second word, Y-O -U -R . I do trust that you will find much joy in hiding away in your heart these precious verses. ‘Y e are our epistle [letter] written in our hearts, known and read o f all men” (2 Cor. 3 :2 ). “O Lord our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earthl” (Psa. 8 :9 ). “Unto you therefore which believe he is precious” (1 Pet. 2 :7 ). “Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for him” (Psa. 37:7), How to Join the K. As a boy, Martin Luther sang at the doors o f different houses in a little German vil lage, and in this way earned money to at tend school. This sounds like a strange way to earn money, doesn’t it? Yet this was according to the custom of the day and place in which Martin Luther lived. He planned at first to be a lawyer when he grew up. This was his father’s wish, but one day something happened which changed Martin Luther’s life. He came into possession o f a Book which I trust each one o f you owns—a Bible. Though he knew many passages of Scripture, he had never really owned or read the entire Bible before. With what eagerness and joy he read and studied this wonderful Book I The Epistle to the Romans especially brought him great joy and comfort, for through reading that part of God’s Word, he finally came to see the wonderful truth that sal vation was a free gift received by believ ing on the Lord Jesus Christ as Saviour. This fact changed his whole life. Mar tin Luther gave all o f his time to telling people about salvation, and he became the great hero o f the Protestant Reformation. You will learn more about him and this great movement as you grow older. W e also remember Martin Luther today for some o f the hymns he wrote. Next month at Christmas time, many o f you will be singing his “ Cradle Hymn” : “Away in a manger, no crib for a bed, The little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head; The stars in the sky looked down where He lay, The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay. “ Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask Thee to stay Close by me forever, and love me, I pray; Bless all the dear children in Thy tender care, And take us to heaven to live with Thee, there.” Let us memorize this hymn this month as we keep the birthday of this great man. —M. S. H. Dear Boys and Girls : November is here again, bringing many good things. This is the month when the trees put on their autumn dresses o f brown and gold and red. How beautiful autumn leaves are! What fun it is, too, to tramp about in the woods on autumn-leaf car pets, hunting for nuts! Yes, November brings us many good things and happy times, but best o f all, it brings us Thanks giving Day. In 1 Samuel 12:24, we read: “ Consider how great things he hath done for you.” What a splendid verse this is for Thanks giving timel “ To consider” means “to think,” “to meditate,” “to weigh,” and this is what the Lord would have us do in regard to all the “great things he hath done for us.” Did you ever try to make a list o f some o f the things for which you are especially thankful? You might try it this year. O f course this list will include the blessings of the great land in which you live, your home, and the love o f par ents and brothers and sisters, but I do trust it will also include for each o f you your Saviour, the Lord Jesus. Let us be thank ful for Him first, and most of all, because every blessing that we enjoy has come to us through Him. Lovingly, Y our J unior E ditor . Thanksgiving Greetings
