these advantages are lacking. His booklet, presenting the subject matter of six evan gelistic messages, abounds in concrete il lustrations with interest-holding qualities. One is impressed anew with the fact of the reasonableness o f according to Christ the headship o f the home, as well as o f the individual heart—an action that brings with it a sense o f holy jo y .. The author has exalted Christ, and his work carries an appeal for both the saved and the un saved reader. 64 pages. World’s Best Literature Depot. Paper. Price 25. cents. Back of the Mountain B y M ary B rewster H ollister Bringing a fragrant and beautiful im pression o f the idealism o f the youth o f China, this novel by Mary Brewster Hol lister gives to American readers a concrete portrayal o f the Nationalist movement. The setting is a tiny “ Back-of-the-Moun- tain” village in the path of the Nationalist army o f 1927. A young woman graduate o f a Chinese college has come to this backward region to teach her people, and finds herself in the midst o f great changes. Thrilling adventures with Chinese bandits and the conflict between the main and the communist wings o f the People’s Party carry the reader forward rapidly and give a striking picture of the difficult condi tions in many parts o f China. The reader who analyzes the book for a clear statement o f the plan of salvation will be disappointed, for the emphasis is more the modem stress upon service. In spite o f this lack, the book has, for the dis criminating reader, a real contribution to ward an understanding and appreciation o f the youth of the new China. 155 pages. Revell Co. Cloth. Price $1.25. Sally Jo B y Z enobia B ird Not many masters of fiction are willing to limit their writing to that type o f ma terial which always exalts the Lord Jesus Christ and is intended to bring the reader into personal and vital relationship with the Saviour. Zenobia Bird has chosen this enviable restriction o f her work, and the result has been an eager acceptance of all her books, o f which Sally Jo is the fourth. The story deals with the heart problems o f the modern girl, abounds in humorous and touching incidents, and in troduces the challenge of the foreign mission field. 216 pages. Revell Co. Cloth. Price $1.50. The New Chain Reference Bible The Third Improved Edition o f the New Chain Reference Bible is offered by the publishers, the B. B. Kirkbride Bible Co., Meridian Life Bldg., Indianapolis, Ind. Eleven new helpful features have been added to this edition, and several others have been improved; yet the book is still a volume o f convenient size—'the India paper edition being only one and one-eighth inches thick. O f course, the outstanding features—the analyses of verses, chapters, and books o f the Bible, the printing out of the verses in full under 1,200 different Biblical and every-day classifications, and the general index o f over 7,000 subjects and names—have all been retained. The New Chain Reference Bible provides a unified system of helps for Bible study. All o f these helps are either right on the page in front o f the eyes of the reader, or are directly con nected with the text and with each other. In other words, the volume is a self-pro nouncing clear-type Bible plus a Bible library, condensed into one handy volume. Write the publishers for full information.

Mildred Duff— A Surrendered Life B y N oel H ope Mildred Duff, of high rank in England, and having been presented at Court, was one of the most popular and attractive debutantes o f the season. And then came the great change. After the first great crisis, her conversion, Mildred Duff stead fastly drew nearer to her Lord in step after step o f fresh renunciation. It is a fascinating biography, and the reading of this book will bring strength and new courage to all who scan its pages. 211 pages. Marshall, Morgan & Scott. Cloth. Price $1.00. How to Make Home a Type of Heaven B y A. E. S tuernagel As an evangelist, the author has had opportunity to make a close study o f the influences exerted by the Christian home, and also of the conditions that obtain when

Believing that “ today what we need most is the vision o f our Lord’s own counte nance, the light o f the knowledge of God’s glory in the face o f Jesus Christ,” the author has produced a choice collection of thirty-eight “Bible portraits o f our Lord in His Person, worth, and work.” The delicate, reverent skill with which the author’s work has been accomplished is discernible on every page. The critical reader may label the meditations anthro pomorphic, but the one who, in the lan guage o f Dr. Lee, is “hankering after God,” will find in these devotional studies new beauties emanating from the Lord Jesus Christ. In three sections o f the book, “ His Silhouette,” “His Lineaments,” and “His Ministry” are pictured with spir itual suggestiveness. 191 pages. Pidker- ing & Inglis. Cloth. Price $1.25.
