Meditation on the Lesson Instead o f considering only the few verses assigned as the lesson, let us think for a little while o f the whole life o f Joseph. As the favorite son o f his father Jacob, he was necessarily in a difficult po sition in relation to his brothers. In bit terness, they termed him “this dreamer” (Gen. 37:19). Although taunted by his brethren, Joseph was chosen of God to re ceive, through the dreams concerning the sheaves and the stars, an understanding of his future position o f prominence. In its entirety, the story o f Joseph shows that it was not merely Joseph’s ambition and will power which brought the ful fillment of these early dreams. Joseph’s exaltation in Egypt was due to the fact that “the Lord was with Joseph” (Gen. 39:2, 3, 5, 21-23). Joseph repeatedly ac knowledged the divine source o f his power to interpret dreams (Gen. 40:8; 41:16, 25, 28, 32, 39). In his declaration to his brothers when the latter had come to Egypt to buy grain, he said: “ Now there fore be not grieved, nor angry with your selves, that ye sold me hither: for God did send me before you to preserve life. . . . So now it was not you that sent me hither, but God” (Gen. 45:5, 8 ). Joseph’s youthful dreams were accomplished be cause God was working out His purpose. Dreams are o f no value and are instead harmful if we put our trust in them. With the coming o f the Lord Jesus Christ and the completion of the revelation that we have in God’s Word, there is no longer need for revelation o f any other kind. Today, what we speak o f as the “dreams” o f youth are idealistic plans for future attainment, i If true blessing is to result, it is highly important that these hopes be surrendered to God. The Apos tle James warns o f the foolishness of planning in self will (Jas. 4:15; cf. vs. 13, 14). But there is a form o f spiritual insight which God desires His children to have as a motive power for their lives. The means of receiving such divine illumination dif fers in Old Testament and modern times, but the results are the same. Isaiah “saw the Lord,” and after that realization of the holiness of God, the prophet acknowledged his need, his life was purified, and he was commissioned to serve. Ezekiel had a vision and spoke God’s message to Israel. Paul had a vision of the Lord Jesus Christ, and ever afterwards he followed Him. To us today, God gives the needful revela tion as we receive His Word. And when “ God . . . hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge o f the glory o f God in the face o f Jesus Christ” (2 Cor. 4 :6 ), there comes through that ex perience God’s own power for the attain ment o f His purpose for each life. Consider God’s W ord (Psa. 119:95). 7. Consider Christ Jesus (Heb. 3:1 ). 8. Consider Christ’s sufferings (Heb. 12:3). 9. Consider one another (Heb. 10:24). — S elected . [Continued on page 416]
Hymn—“Lead On, O King Eternal.” Quiet Hour. Hymn—“Jesus Shall Reign.” Benediction—Hebrews 13:20, 21. Meditation on the Lesson Jesus said: “ I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” The final and ultimate answer to “Why did Jesus come?” is this: He came to give life —eternal life. “ The gift o f God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Rom. 6:23). And the infinite cost o f that gift is in dicated in this passage o f our lesson: “I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep . . . I lay down my life for the sheep.” W e realize with reverent gratitude that the death of our Lord was no ordinary martyrdom. He only o f all who ever lived could say: “ I lay down my life, that I might take it again. No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again.” In obedience to the command o f the Father, the eternal Son o f God chose to lay down His life for lost sinners. Leader’s Helps 1. W h y J esus C am e Read in the first chapter o f Romans Paul’s description o f the world of his day. Into a world rotten with wickedness came Jesus, to save it from its sins. Jesus came to show us what God is—a Father, infi nite Love! Jesus came to be a Light in the midst o f darkness—His teachings bring mental and spiritual illumination wherever He comes today. Jesus came to give hope to the hopeless, to seek and to save the lost. And who are the lost? Those who have forgotten God and live in sin. Jesus came, the Son o f God, in order to show man God’s interest in him. He was “ God . . . manifest in the flesh.” Jesus came to take away the sin of the world. Jesus came that through death He might destroy him that had the power o f death —the devil. He opened the gates of life and took away the fear of death. — A nderson . II. O ur L iving C hrist 1. What we all want is more life, and Christ gives life abundant. If our iife is meager and weak, it is because we have not allied ourselves with Christ.— W ilson . 2 . Those that do not accept Christ are like men who prefer tallow candles to electric light—Christ is the Light o f the world. __________ — F arrar .
