a holy One to take their place, that through Him they might be led back to God. God promised such a Saviour. All through the Old Testament part of the Bible, God kept reminding His people o f His promises. The people didn’t know when the Saviour would come, but through prophets, God told the people cer tain things about the Saviour. He was to come as a baby. God was to be His Fa ther. He was to be born in the city o f Bethlehem. Then, one night, when the people least expected the Saviour to be born, He ac tually came. You know the story—how Mary and Jo seph traveled to Bethlehem; how the city was so crowded with people that there was no room for them in the inn; how Jesus was born in a manger; how the sky grew bright, and the angels told of His birth; and how the shepherds on the hillside saw and heard and came and wor shiped the little babe who was the Saviour o f the world. This is the reason why we celebrate Christmas. Object Lesson C hristmas G ifts Objects: Two hearts painted on card board, one black, and the other with a pic ture o f Christ in it; and various pictures clipped from magazines. Lesson: Day after tomorrow is Christ mas, and you are wondering what your gifts will be. Here is a picture o f a pair of skates. Do you think you would be sat isfied if you received a pair for Christ mas? Notice that the skates do not fill the heart, and the heart soon swallows them and is looking for others things. (A flap in the heart will allow the pictures to fall Golden Text: “Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born o f G od: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten o f him” (1 John S :1). Outline and Exposition I. L ove (1, 2). T h e apostle has been speaking of the great fact that God is love (chapter 4 )—a fact that is known only by revelation, not by study or by intuition. None o f the pagan peoples know anything of a god who is love; all their gods are accounted to be cruel. Only in the Scrip tures do we learn o f a God o f love. Every one who is “born o f God” possesses God’s nature, and love is necessarily the mani festation of that nature. The one who be lieves that Jesus is the Christ is born of God. That is, the belief which brings the the new birth is the experimental, not merely the intellectual, belief which sees in Jesus the Christ, very God o f very God. One who possesses God’s nature will necessarily love God, and will love all those who are born of God. Having the nature of God, such a one will respond in love to the same nature wherever it is found. And it is by this fact that we know that we are born o f God, because if any man shall say, “I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar” (1 John 4:20). Any one who is not born of God will not, because he cannot, love those who are born o f God—at least not in the manner 'to which the apostle exhorts. W e must re member that the love spoken of here is not

from sight behind the cardboard.) I am reminded of the words o f Jeremiah, “ The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” A girl’s heart will tell her that it will be satisfied if she can get a new dress. Here is the dress, but it, too, fails to fill the heart. The dress is soon forgotten, and the deceitful heart is asking for something else. Mother’s heart tells her that it will be satisfied when she gets a new electric wash ing machine, but the deceitful heart swal lows it and is soon looking for something new. If it were possible for us to get everything the eye could see, the heart would still be dissatisfied. (Use other pic tures for other members o f the family.) Here is a satisfied heart. What is in it? It is a picture o f Jesus. This heart has net tried to be satisfied with things, but has opened the door and let Christ come in. You will notice that it is filled with sun shine. The rays of sunshine do not stop with this one heart, but radiate to those around it. Boys and girls, your heart will tell you that you can find satisfaction in getting just things, but the Bible tells us that we find peace and satisfaction only in Christ. mere sentiment. Human beings may have sentiment, but God alone can impart love, because God alone is love. II. O bedience (2, 3). W e may assuredly know whether we love God by our response to His com mandments' (v . .2 ). Jesus Himself said: “ If a man love me, he will keep my words” (John 14:23). It is folly for one to say he loves God, when that one continues to live in disobedience to His Word. The proof that we love God is found in obed ience. The passage does not mean that a man must keep commandments in order to experience the new birth, that is, to ob tain salvation. Neither do the words of our lesson mean that there are a certain number o f commandments given by God, after obeying which we are free to do our own will and fulfill our own desires. The commandments referred to are those in structions o f the Word o f God which are written indelibly upon the heart of the BLACKBOARD LESSON
