of the many gifts which God has given to us. When God made the world, He gave us our first gifts—the sun and the moon and the stars, land and water, plants of all kinds, birds, fish, and animals. Then He gives us, too, our fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters—all of our family and friends. He also gives us our homes. Sometimes we think that our fathers and mothers give us our homes, and they do, but all o f the things that our homes are made o f come from God’s beautiful earth. W e can go on and on telling about the gifts we have; and when we think about where they come from, we find that they have all really come from God. Now let us think of how we can show God that we love Him. Yes, by thanking Him for our good gifts. W e can show our thanks by using our gifts and by taking care o f them. Best of all, we can show our love by taking Jesus to be our Saviour, for then we are truly God’s children. And if we are His children, we will show that we are, for we will love others. Our heavenly Father wishes His children to love one another. Surely we want to please Him who “ so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son.”

“I did not say Cecil Smithers could have the sixpence.” “No, sir,” said the half-frightened boy, “but you did say ‘whosoever,’ and that means me.”— S elected . Hpw to Show We Love God 1 J oh n S :1-13 Memory Verse: “For this is the love o f God, that we keep his commandments” (1 John S :3). Approach: Christmas is a time when ev ery one gives gifts to those whom he loves. This is in remembrance of the great Gift which God gave to us on the first Christ mas Day—the gift of His Son, the Lord . . Jesus Christ. O f _t \ V y R | V >

Object Lesson R esolutions

Objects: Sand, a small bag of cement, a glass of water, and a small block of ce ment. Lesson: At the beginning o f each year, many people promise themselves that they will stop certain bad habits and will start doing certain good things. As a rule, such resolutions do not last very long, because unsaved people are too much like the sand in this saucer. Do people build houses on the sand? No, sand cannot be depended on as a foundation. In the book o f James, we read: “A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways.” Here is a little sack of cement which will represent Jesus Christ. This glass o f water will stand for the Bible, God’s Word. If we should mix all these to gether, it would make a block o f cement like this one which I made last week. When an unsaved person believes the, Bi ble, the living water, and accepts Christ, the Rock of Ages, as his own Saviour, his whole life is changed. He is no longer like the shifting sand. People can depend on him. God, too, can depend on him, and God is able to use such a person in His service. Jesus wanted Peter to realize this great truth, and He said: “Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.” There was a time in the life of Peter when he was very much like the shifting: sand. When Peter was asked about Christ, on the night that Jesus was taken by the sol diers, he denied that he had ever known the Lord. But the time came when Peter was changed, and he became a stone on which God could depend. Are you like the sand, or are you like a block o f cement? If you have taken Christ as your Saviour, you are like the cement. If you have never accepted Him, you are as the sand, and it will be impossible for you to keep the resolutions which you may make. Fiction for Young Folk The Hand on the Bridle by Kathleen M. MacLeod. An anxious boy was with difficulty riding a young and unbroken horse along a rough pathway. Unseen by the rider, a figure in white walked beside the horse, controlling and guiding through out the journey. It was the risen Christ. Around this picture is woven a charming English story suitable for boys and girls from eleven to seventeen. 256 pages. Pickering & Inglis. Cloth. Price $1.00. The Two Myrtles by Laura A. Barter Snow. In her usual appealing manner, Laura A. Barter Snow writes a tale of two girls of identical names, but in dif ferent stations in life. And each “being in the way,” the Lord led her. The story is suitable for young girls o f Junior and Intermediate age. 159 pages. John Ritchie, Ltd. Cloth. Price 60 cents.

course it isn’t just on Christmas Day that we remember the love of God, and it isn’t just for the gift o f His Son that we thank Him, though t h e L o r d Jesus is the greatest of God’s gifts. L e s s o n S to r y : Let us think today
