DECEMBER 19 To Run, or to Drag?

the journey. . . . What am I purposing for tomorrow? What am I setting out to do? Have I committed it to the Lord, or am I setting out upon a solitary journey? If I am going out alone, fretfulness will encounter me before I have gone many steps in the way; if I go out in the com pany of Jesus, I shall have the peace that passeth understanding, and the heat o f my life will be the ardor o f an intensé devo tion. . . . This is the cure for cdre. —J. H. J owett . In order to the “hearing of faith” these things are necessary: The gift of the Spirit needs' to be announced; then the gift needs to be apprehended. It is one of the laws of the mind that what we do not intelligently apprehend we cannot appropriate, which is the third step in this process. After appropriation, there should follow appreciation, for the thankful heart is always the receiving heart. Then follows, as a logical sequence, applica tion. Note carefully these steps—annun ciation, apprehension, appropriation, appre ciation, and application. The whole fabric o f our fellowship with the Father, with the Son, and with the Holy Spirit, has to be clearly set upon the foundation of the divine Word, given, understood, believed, and applied. Christian experience is not a thing magical or mystical; it is neither fanciful nor fanatical; but an intelligent fellowship with God based on His own Word. The inmost secret o f all blessed ness is a promising God and an appropriat ing creature.—J. G regory M an tle . DECEMBER 17 The Place of Rejoicing in Holy Living "Rejoice in the Lord always” (Phil. 4:4). Let us notice what the divine secret for the holy life in Philippi was to be. I read it, in two or three particulars, thus: First, they were to rejoice, and it was to be in the Lord. Second, their moderation was to be known unto all men, and the magic talisman for its being so was this: “The Lord is at hand.” And then, finally, they were to keep in continual touch, by prayer, with God in Christ, and His peace would then, in Christ, keep their hearts and thoughts. When the apostle says, “ Rejoice in the Lord,” he means that to rejoice in the Lord they are to look again to, and take in more of, Him and what He is. — H andley C. G. M oule . DECEMBER 18 The Citadel Committed to God “Let them . . . commit the keeping of their souls to him" (1 Pet. 4:19). You know it is one thing to give your self to God, and it is another thing to know the meaning of God’s keeping power. You have to “commit the keeping,” mark the words. I may give a man a present, and say, “ This is yours, but I am going to keep it for the time being.” That is, I bestow the gift, but I retain the keeping of it in my own hands. . . . We have to learn what it means to commit the keep ing o f our bodies to God. . . . The reason why many Christians get into trouble is that they have not really committed the walls o f the city into the hands o f the divine Keeper. So you see, first of all we must know what it is to be divinely con quered, then what it is to be divinely con trolled. — E van H . H o p k in s . DECEMBER 16 Faith in Action - “ The hearing o f faith ” (Gal. 3:2 ).

" / ran the way of. thy commandments when thou didst enlarge my heart” (Psa. 119:32, Septuagint version). It is sad that the mass o f believers are mere babes in spiritual development. They see days o f great weakness, and are often on the verge of surrender to the foe. Some, alas, throw away their arms, and run away from the fight. Others fight all their lives with foes in their own hearts, and never overcome and cast them out. They have been told that this war in the members is the normal Christian life. Hence, instead o f believing the Word of God, they limit His power by their unbelief, and never gladly run, but always sadly drag themselves along the heavenly way. This large class of Chris tians need enlightenment and encourage ment and not denunciation. They need to dwell in thought upon the “exceeding great and precious promises,” that they may have an experience o f the “exceeding greatness o f God’s power to us-ward who believe.”— D an iel S teele . DECEMBER 20 Waiting “And now, Lord, what wait I fo r? my hope is in thee” (Psa. 39:7). Waiting! Yes, quietly waiting! No need for an anxious dread; Shall He not assuredly guide me, Who giveth me daily bread? Waiting! Yes, trustfully waiting! I know, though I’ve waited long, That, while He withholds His purpose, His waiting cannot be wrong. Waiting! Expectantly waiting! Perhaps it may be today The Master will quickly open The gate to my future way. DECEMBER 21 Where God Is “Mine eyes and mine heart shall be there” (1 Ki. 9 :3 ). In the promise before us, Jehovah, by implication, assures us that He has eyes to see all our sorrows and to weep for them; a heart to feel for all our sin and to remove it—first, fqrgiving it through the atoning blood, and then delivering from it by the living Spirit. Yes, even if we are fallen by our iniquity, still the pity of God pursues us ; the love o f God desires us ; the hand of God is able to rescue us.‘ If in your life there be some gorge darker than another, some crevass deeper than another, and you, like a fallen sheep or —J.
