DAD: MY HERO
Celebrating the Man to Whom I Owe Everything
It’s often said that a man’s very first hero in his life is his dad. For daughters and sons alike, our fathers, just like our mothers, are the pillars of our development and the center of our lives while we grow and develop. Dads teach us some of the toughest lessons that we learn in our lives and also share in our greatest achievements. Children look to their fathers to provide security, protection, and comfort. And, if you’ve ever witnessed a father hold his newborn baby for the first time, that love that radiates from his smile is captivating. When a man becomes a father, his whole world is changed — it may mean less time spent with friends or on personal hobbies, but that responsibility as a father is such an honor and their lives are always changed for the better.
My dad, Bob Kendall, is by far my biggest hero — bigger than Superman and Batman, my dad always was and still is my #1. Growing up, one of the most important things that I learned from my dad was a work ethic. I watched as he worked two jobs and still managed to be an amazing
Throughout my life, my dad has always been my best friend. His company, trust, opinion, and thoughts mean so much to me and hold such a great value in my heart. Everything I am and all that I’ve accomplished, I owe to him. Dad, you’re forever my hero! I’m also extremely blessed to have my father-in-law and bonus dad, Ron Murphy, in my life. My wife has told me so many great stories and memories of her childhood and the great impact that her father made in her life. To know that my wife had such a great man by her side every step of the way is such a comfort to me, and since knowing my wife, he’s been the best father-in law ever and we really enjoy traveling with him and my mother-in-law, Shelly. This Father’s Day, I encourage each of you to do something special for your dad if you are still able. To all of the great dads out there, have a very happy and blessed Father’s Day. Enjoy your day — you deserve it!

father and husband. He was a police officer by night and a boat ranger during the day, affording my mom the opportunity to stay home and care for us kids. Although he was extremely busy, he always made time for us and made sure that we knew just how loved we were. In everything I did, and still do, he’s my biggest supporter. He has drilled into me that I can do anything I set my mind to as long as I work hard and stay dedicated and determined. From junior high, all the way until the day I got my driver’s license, he drove me to school every single day. The memories I have of that time spent in the car, chatting away are priceless.

NO CAFFEINE NEEDED
HOW TO BEAT YOUR AFTERNOON SLUMP
We all know the feeling: Sometime after lunch, you become sluggish, spacy, and unproductive. Many of us instinctively turn to caffeine to power through the rest of the day, but that can cause another crash, not to mention sleep problems. But don’t worry — you aren’t doomed to an aimless afternoon. We’ve compiled expert tips to perk up and carry on with your busy day. PLAN YOUR WORK. All of our bodies have internal rhythms, and by now, you probably know yours. Typically, people peak mid-morning or in the late afternoon. But whenever your productive heights are, plan around them. Complete the detailed, creative, or difficult work during the times when your energy is at its best, and save your “busy work” or repetitive tasks for the lulls when you feel less motivated. You’ll feel better and get more done. CONSUME HEALTHY FOODS AND LOTS OF WATER. Maybe you don’t have complete control of your schedule. That’s where a healthy snack comes in. We tend to crash in the afternoon when our blood sugar drops, usually due to consuming carbohydrates. Eating vegetables, fruit, and protein or fiber-rich foods will help pick up Save Your Smile If the thought of visiting the dentist makes you nervous, anxious, and queasy, you are not alone! According to the Journal of Dental Hygiene, between 50 and 80 percent of all adults experience some form of dental anxiety, and in some cases, this anxiety prevents them from attending routine dental visits and checkups. But, dental checkups are vital to your overall health and should not be missed! While there are many reasons to fear the dentist, including worry that the dentist will cause you pain, anxiety about needles and shots, fear that the numbing agents will not work, feeling uncomfortable with someone working in your mouth, or embarrassment of the condition of your teeth, there are many ways to combat these fears. Here are some methods to help you overcome your dental phobia. FIND A DENTAL OFFICE THAT CATERS TO DENTAL ANXIETY. Here at Texas Sedation Dental, we have the team, tools, and expertise to put you at ease. No matter what type of dental work you require, our doctors are qualified to administer both IV and oral sedation to help calm your nerves and keep you comfortable during any procedure. your energy without incurring a future dip. While you’re snacking, drink some water. A 2018 study out of Yale found that even mild dehydration can negatively affect our brains’ ability to function, so don’t let your water bottle sit untouched. GET UP AND MOVE. You’re not going to get over that slump by sitting in your chair. If you want to beat back fatigue, go for a walk, climb some stairs, stretch, or do some jumping jacks. Researchers have proven that exercise wakes up both your body and your mind. In fact, science says it will do a better job of rousing you than caffeine will. Best of all, it will help, not hurt, your ability to sleep at night. Finally, set yourself up for success by going to bed at a reasonable hour and getting your necessary 7–9 hours of sleep. Our attention ebbs and flows naturally, so none of us can be our best 100% of the time. But along with these other tips, staying well-rested can help you pick up the pace.
COMBATTING FEAR OF THE DENTAL CHAIR
DON’T GO ALONE. To help calm your nerves, bring a family member or friend along to your appointment. Even if your support person just waits in the waiting area during your procedure, it’s comforting to know that someone is there with you! ARRIVE EARLY, BUT NOT TOO EARLY! If you’re rushing to get there on time, it may make you all the more anxious. To help keep yourself in a calm state of mind, allow yourself a nice 15-minute buffer to get there in time to fill out any paperwork and to get settled before they call you back. But don’t get there too early, or you may find yourself waiting anxiously for quite some time! COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR DENTIST. If you suffer from dental anxiety, let your dentist know. Because it’s so common, dentists have a few tricks up their sleeves to help you settle in and feel more at ease. Communication is key! Your dental health is paramount because it is so closely connected to your overall health. If you suffer from dental anxiety, it’s important to know that you are not alone and there is nothing to be ashamed of. There are many ways, including sedation, to help you feel more relaxed and at ease the next time you visit the dentist!

MINI NO-BAKE KEY LIME PIES
Inspired by FoodNetwork.com
If you’ve ever seen someone with huge swollen cheeks that resemble a chipmunk, it’s safe to say that they likely had their wisdom teeth removed. But, what exactly are wisdom teeth, where did they get their name, and why do so many people get them removed? Wisdom teeth are the third and final set of molars that appear in our mouths. Who would’ve thought that in our late teenage years or early 20s, we’d be getting more teeth? In fact, wisdom teeth get their name from the fact that they appear at a more mature age than the rest of the teeth. Some people don’t even have wisdom teeth. According to the Dental Research Journal, 5%–37% of people do not have one or more of their wisdom teeth. When wisdom teeth are properly aligned and don’t cause impaction or complications within the rest of the mouth, they can be a valuable asset for chewing and biting through tough foods. However, for many people, the wisdom teeth are positioned horizontally, misaligned, or projected to come in angled toward or away from the second set of molars. If the wisdom teeth were to come in at these bizarre angles, the rest of the teeth could shift, become crowded, or even be damaged. In cases where the wisdom teeth are impacted, meaning they are stuck in the soft tissue or jawbone and only able to partially break through the gums, the teeth become a risk of infection because the partial eruption becomes a breeding site for bacteria. This could result in pain, jaw stiffness, swelling, potential sickness, gum disease, or tooth decay. If you still have your wisdom teeth and have never had them checked, be sure to see your dentist to help determine if your wisdom teeth pose a threat to your oral health! It’s important to always monitor them to ensure they don’t ever become a problem. Let’s Talk Wisdom Teeth! The Smartest Teeth Around
